Second speeding offences

Staceyjustinhar · 15/03/2024 13:49

Foolishly, I have been caught speeding for the second time in a year. This will only be my second offence. Anyone know what will be the likely outcome?

3 points and £100 fine. Depending on your speed maybe a speed awareness course if you haven’t already done one in the last three years

thanks. Are the fines greater for second offences?

Hey, my DH got his second speeding fine in the space of 6 months. I was fully anticipating points and a fine but surprisingly he was invited to do a speed awareness course. I thought this wasn't an option if you've already done one recently. This was a better option as it avoids the hike in insurance when the points get added. If you're within a certain speed limit maybe you'll get the option too.

KarateSchnitzel · 15/03/2024 14:02

Also, to answer your question, no I don't think the fine is higher for second offence.

I was done twice in a week. First ticket was a speed awareness course, second was 3 points and £100 fine.

That's what you'll get, if it wasn't over a certain speed.

MysticTrayBake · 15/03/2024 15:15

If it's your second time in a year you stand no chance of being offered a speed awareness course, even if you were only slightly over the limit. It'll probably be a fixed penalty notice (3 points, £100 fine) if slightly over. If well over the limit, it'll be straight to court. A bit more detail of how the process works and what to expect in this article about speeding.

Thats not true. My DH was offered a second one in the space of six months.

He must be very lucky then, as that's not how it's meant to work. It would make a mockery of the system if people could repeatedly get caught speeding and be offered the course over and over again, despite not having learnt the first time.

FedUpMumof10YO · 15/03/2024 15:37

I did this within 6 months, the first I was offered a course for which I did. At that course they said if you're caught again within 18 months, the original 3 points stand.

BUTTT I got caught again 6 months later and only 3 points stand.

🤷‍♀️

You can only do one course every three years. There are speed awareness courses and red light courses. They are different courses for different offences (obvs)

KarateSchnitzel · 15/03/2024 15:45

DH must have been very lucky then as PP mentioned. He definitely did two speed awareness courses in the space of six months.

Nope it depends on WHAT the speed code was.

You can do more courses if you're caught in different police area and different road types, e.g. motorway Vs a road.

Ahhhh this explains why he got to do it twice!

I’ve literally just done a speed awareness course (last week) and we were told that you are only allowed to attend one course every 3 years.

Well I worked in the camera unit and unless government policy has changed what I’ve said is correct.

VestibuleVirgin · 16/03/2024 17:26

Why do you have to speed?

That used to be the case but not anymore. Now it is a centralised booking system so you can't do them more than every 3 years. Years ago you could do them with every police force in the country (where you were caught speesing) and not get points. They have stopped that now.

VestibuleVirgin · 16/03/2024 17:36

@PersephonePitstop Happy to oblige! Of course, I should have waited for the 'I like speeding, AMA' thread and posted there.

Don’t think it was ever the case you could speed all over the country and keep doing SAWS. It’s correct that it’s a central booking system. Your details will be on their showing previous courses attended. You can only do one every three years x
