Rejecting newly installed dishwasher

Blomberg integrated dishwasher £500, £100 for installation, £20 to dispose of the old one. Paid on Tuesday, installed today.

Saw the model in the shop. Choice was between the Blomberg and a Neff. Both the same price. Blomberg had a 3rd tray at the top for cutlery and free extension to 5 year warranty - these 2 factors decided it for me. Both dishwashers were around 13 place settings. I asked the advice of the chappie in the shop.

Installed this afternoon. No problems UNTIL I loaded it. My dinner plates don’t fit, the rotating arm catches on them no matter where I put them on the bottom rack. My dinner plates are standard Emma Bridgwater polka dot plates.

I want to reject the dishwasher as unfit for purpose. Anyone any experience of doing similar? Any experience of plates not fitting? TIA.

Have you checked in the manual whether you can raise the upper rack, it's quite a common feature which should allow you to use it with your larger plates.

cnmsltwunt · 02/11/2023 23:30

Seems logical that a 3rd tray would reduce the space of the other two. Can't you adjust them?

Ponderingwindow · 02/11/2023 23:30

we always bring a couple plates and a couple of our favorite tall glasses when we shop for dishwashers for precisely this reason.

Most have an adjustable upper rack, but you may lose the ability to put taller items on top.

Missingthegore · 02/11/2023 23:34

Likely able to move the middle rack

PumkinPorridge · 02/11/2023 23:47

You won't be able to return it for not being fit for purpose.

Daffyyellow · 02/11/2023 23:50

Thank you, in my panic I had already thought and then forgotten about raising the middle rack! Looks like it might be possible.

There's no such thing as a standardised plate size so it's always something which needs checking. If it says it fits plates up to x and doesn't that's one thing but if you didn't check the plates you own would fit then it's in you.

HappiDaze · 02/11/2023 23:57

They must be big plates if the arm is hitting them

How big are the plates ?

I have standard white Royal Doulton plates I've had for over 20 years and they fit ok in my 16 year old Bosch dishwasher

I do have to be careful though with some kitchen utensils that are too long and stop the arm from spinning

HappiDaze · 03/11/2023 00:03

My plates are 26cm

KnickerlessParsons · 03/11/2023 00:04

Look on the bright side - now you get to buy some new crockery too!
😁

Airyfairy99 · 03/11/2023 00:22

You take a couple of glasses and plates dishwasher shopping ? Why not just 1 of each ? Iv never took plates or glasses .... Mind boggled

Even if the middle rack can't be raised, I'm afraid you have no grounds for rejecting the dishwasher. You can only reject it as not fit for purpose if either it cannot wash plates at all, or you have specified a particular purpose (e.g. "I need it to wash 10.5 inch plates") and the shop has recommended a model that can't do what you want.

Dogsitterwoes · 03/11/2023 09:42

Try turning the plates round so they face the back. I have to do this with a couple of mine, they are at more of an angle.

andymary · 03/11/2023 09:49

As harsh as it sounds, unfortunately, it's not the dishwasher that's unfit for purpose. You failed to check the specification of the dishwasher to see if it would fit your needs - consumer error.

Daffyyellow · 03/11/2023 16:05

Thanks all.

Lessons learnt.

The dishwasher is a crock. Washes beautifully but is really poorly designed. I don’t believe my plates are huge. Top cutlery tray has been removed. Middle (now top) rack has been raised. Plates fit, glasses fit on top rack (they didn’t when it was raised) but they fall every time the rack is opened/shut. Now stuck with tiny cutlery basket, and I don’t feel like I should have to pay to rectify problems with a brand new product.

This is not about how to stack a dishwasher I’ve been doing that for plenty of years!

I had the same problem with my neff dishwasher and my dinner plates, I was always moving the top rack up or down. I ended up digging out my old plates that weren't quite so big. I don't know how far you'd get trying to return it but it's flipping annoying. I really miss my old dishwasher, I could get anything in that.

NotMeNoNo · 03/11/2023 17:37

Tip to anyone shopping for a dishwasher - take a plate with you.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 03/11/2023 17:42

It's not the dishwasher design. There are some things I won't buy because I can tell by looking at them they won't fit in the dishwasher. Other things have to be artfully arranged to stop them falling over, etc. I much prefer a cutlery basket as it's quicker to chuck stuff in than ponce about arranging it all horizontally.

dementedpixie · 03/11/2023 17:46

I bought plates to fit our dishwasher as we have a cutlery rack too. Yours is fit for purpose, it just doesn't fit that size of plate

I'll put my tin hat on and say I've never had, used, or wanted a dishwasher, and I have brought up 2 kids and had a full time job.

Then you have no idea what you’re missing out on. Poor you.

Well, I love my dishwasher and hate washing dishes by hand
