Rejecting newly installed dishwasher

Daffyyellow · 02/11/2023 23:23

Blomberg integrated dishwasher £500, £100 for installation, £20 to dispose of the old one. Paid on Tuesday, installed today.

Saw the model in the shop. Choice was between the Blomberg and a Neff. Both the same price. Blomberg had a 3rd tray at the top for cutlery and free extension to 5 year warranty - these 2 factors decided it for me. Both dishwashers were around 13 place settings. I asked the advice of the chappie in the shop.

Installed this afternoon. No problems UNTIL I loaded it. My dinner plates don’t fit, the rotating arm catches on them no matter where I put them on the bottom rack. My dinner plates are standard Emma Bridgwater polka dot plates.

I want to reject the dishwasher as unfit for purpose. Anyone any experience of doing similar? Any experience of plates not fitting? TIA.

@Manadou

Then you don’t know what you are missing if you’ve never had one so you can’t really comment on whether it is useful or not to own a dishwasher

lemonyfox · 03/11/2023 18:18

Jesus Christ £25 for a plate (misses the point)

MegCleary · 03/11/2023 18:21

I got my first dishwasher 2 years ago when we got a new kitchen and I loved it more than my children. We have since moved and no dishwasher here, first thing on DHs wish list 😆

Yeah I’m too clumsy for expensive plates! 😆🙈

Petrine · 03/11/2023 18:52

I’d check back with the guy in the store where you bought it to make absolutely sure the upper rack can’t be raised. I have a Bosh dishwasher with cutlery tray at the top and my plates go in no problem - (Denby) I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect to able to put dinner plates in the lower tray… that’s what it’s for.

Cherubimbum · 03/11/2023 19:23

Quick tip, rather than take plates with you and risk breaking them as you tote them round the shops, draw round them on a piece of cardboard/old cereal box, cut them out and take the cutouts instead. You can also cut out a chink of cardboard the height of your wine glasses to see if they will fit.

dementedpixie · 03/11/2023 20:03

@Daffyyellow why have you removed the cutlery tray? You can raise the top rack while retaining the tray

Daffyyellow · 03/11/2023 20:05

Raised the middle rack, issues with bottom rack resolved but then no tall glasses fitted on the middle rack. The only way to make the glasses fit was to remove the cutlery rack.

My taller glasses go in at an angle rather than standing straight up. Also bought wine glasses with short stubby stems rather than long thin ones

Just drink out of shorter glasses, or wash the tall ones by hand.

Angrymum22 · 03/11/2023 20:24

Glasses go in at an angle, it stops them rattling around and they are less likely to break against each other.
The cutlery tray was a game changer for me when I first got one. I did have to educate my DH on the ergonomics of using it though.

FedUpMumof10YO · 03/11/2023 21:14

I've had the same issue with Candy. It's absolutely a shocker of a dishwasher. So poorly designed. I'm now stuck with it until it dies. It infuriates me 😡

Manadou · 03/11/2023 17:49

I'll put my tin hat on and say I've never had, used, or wanted a dishwasher, and I have brought up 2 kids and had a full time job.

And I do all my laundry in the river. Washing machines are a waste of time.

Gobleki · 03/11/2023 21:19

I’m so anti washing up that I buy things that go in dishwasher nicely. Im
always rejecting bowls / glasses and stuff because they won’t fit nicely in dishwasher. Even use those old fashioned wide lip bowls which I find to shallow but put up with because they load so nicely!

Daffyyellow · 03/11/2023 21:55

@dementedpixie I put them in on an angle, even then they didn’t fit!

That reminds me of a YouTube video I saw a few years ago. Guy went round Currys etc testing the toasters to see which would fit a slice of Warburton's without having to turn it half way thru. He had a cardboard cut out of a slice of Warburton's 😄

Cherubimbum · 04/11/2023 07:51

@RiderOfTheBlue Probably where I got the idea from! 😅

Moredarkchocolateplease · 04/11/2023 07:59

We paid £1000 for a dishwasher this year because it was A+++ rated.

I bloody hate it. It doesn't wash as well. Fecking eco cycle is shit. The rotating arm pours with water when you pull out the racks - it doesn't drain unless I press down on one end of it.

Bosch. Don't ever get one. Wish I'd gone for a cheap and cheerful not eco.

Oh and it has this weird thing in the back of the drum that creates this sort of chemical smell. Eugfhhhhhhh

OP all I can say is that I've learnt to seethe less about mine.

Btw when mine arrived I also thought I couldn't fit plates or glasses. There were three heights for the middle shelf, maybe see if you have more than one option.

I can fit a massive plate on bottom and an upright pint glass on top.

I can't however get all my chopping boards around the side like I could before.

ReviewingTheSituation · 04/11/2023 08:01

I think cutlery trays were a backward step in dishwasher design. Whilst you can technically fit in plates and wine glasses under the tray, having the glasses at such a shallow angle to fit in means they take up more space on the top row.
It's surely more space efficient to have your cuttley in the basket at the bottom, and be able to fully utilise the top.

Plus you can just take the basket out of the DW to the cutlery drawer to put it all away. And it's easier to just bung odd knives, teaspoons etc into the basket, rather than faffing around arranging them on the shelf.

nibblessquibbles · 04/11/2023 08:10

It's ironic because when I bought my dishwasher recently I specifically wanted one without a cutlery tray because I think they are a waste of space and annoying to load.
But none of that helps you OP. Sorry to say I think you are in shaky ground here to reject, you went to the showroom and you saw the dishwasher and presumably therefore it would be argued you had the chance to check angles and heights etc (appreciate no one prob does this). So I don't see how you can reject the dishwasher.
If you viewed in shop but bought online you may be able to reject within 14 days or whatever under distance selling regs.
Assuming it was a shop purchase your best bet may be to go back to the shop and explain and ask them if they'll take it back and swap. They may do this for a fee/charge but that may be better than being annoyed for the next 5 years everytime you stack the dw

Honestly you only need to take one plate!

Actually when I bought my Dualit toaster I dithered for ages in case the bread from my Panasonic bread maker wouldn't fit. Debated taking a slice of bread into John Lewis for ages but chickened out and took a tape measure instead. BTW yes it does just fit.

Aphotoaday · 04/11/2023 10:20

Love my Neff with cutlery tray and eco setting, best appliance ever bought.

Daffyyellow · 04/11/2023 11:09

@Moredarkchocolateplease ironically the bloody Blomberg is replacing a Bosch that last over 15 years and only had a problem with it once, until the last year!

Focalpoint · 04/11/2023 13:35

I think it's the upper tray that is the design flaw in all of these dishwashers. They haven't got any bigger so the space has to come from somewhere.

Daffyyellow · 04/11/2023 13:38

@Focalpoint totally agree! The third rack creates the issue as it takes up space that isn’t spare with the plates and glasses we have.
