Speed awareness course

Does attendance affect the insurance premium ?

Trying to decide whether it's worth paying for the course, if the premium will increase the same as 3 points will do.

Yes

it will

Both options will

bounce89 · 24/07/2023 12:56

You don't have to notify your insurance if you do the speed awareness course but you do if you get points.

MaybeSmaller · 24/07/2023 12:58

I've never had an insurance company even ask about attending speed awareness courses. It doesn't count as a criminal conviction.

On the other hand they ALWAYS ask about penalty points/convictions.

So I would do the course. It's cheaper anyway as surely the alternative is £100 PLUS 3 points?

Bobbybobbins · 24/07/2023 12:58

I don't think the awareness course does affect it as you are not obliged to inform your insurer as you are with points?

Bobbybobbins · 24/07/2023 12:59

And personally I found the course interesting and useful

MaybeSmaller · 24/07/2023 13:00

You also need to consider "totting" where if you get 12 points in I think a 3 year period you could be banned from driving and/or get an enormous fine.
A speed awareness course doesn't count towards that.

Gymmum82 · 24/07/2023 13:00

The course won’t as you don’t have to notify your insurance that you’ve attended one. You will have to tell them about points though

That's not true.

Popworld · 24/07/2023 13:01

I think some insurance companies will ask . Not many though. Better to do the course . The fine + added premiums for the next 3/4 years will cost more than the course.

MillWood85 · 24/07/2023 13:04

I didn't declare my speed awareness course to my insurance. I did though when I got 3 points a year later Hmm moral of that story is don't travel at 78mph on a bypass even when you've had a phone call to say your Dad is at the end of his life and you need to get there asap. Speeding is never excusable but I did seriously question the universe that day.

terriblyangryattimes · 24/07/2023 13:04

Look on the Ukroed website. They state it shouldn't affect your insurance premium in one of their FAQs (they provide the speed awareness course for delivery)

babygirl88 · 24/07/2023 13:05

I saw it as a get out of jail free card, i did the course and nothing else changed. The course was interesting aswell.

Was you cought by a camera or police officer?

gogomoto · 24/07/2023 13:07

No, didn't have to declare it

justme2022 · 24/07/2023 13:09

I've just done one and we were told you don't have to declare it it not asked but some companies will. If they do obviously you can't lie about it.
It's actually a really interesting course.

Clevs · 24/07/2023 13:12

If you take the points your insurance you will have to declare them for 5 years to your insurance company which means five years of an increased premium.

I've never been asked about a speed awareness course so no, it won't increase your premium (but if they do ask them obviously you have to declare it).

MillWood85 · 24/07/2023 13:14

@Popworld it was a hand held camera with the police officer stood overhead on a bridge.

StopFeckingFaffing · 24/07/2023 13:15

The speed awareness course is usually a similar cost to the fine so you have to pay whichever option you choose

Always better to do the course and avoid points on your license if you are offered that as an option

I assuming you weren't dealt with in person ?

Billoddiesbeard · 24/07/2023 13:22

My insurance have never asked about speed awareness course. They do however ask about about any aquired points.
I have attended speed awareness courses and have never noticed a detrimental change to my insurance premiums.

Georgyporky · 24/07/2023 13:35

Thanks for the replies.
A further question.

Is the £100 fine waived if I take the course, as some posters think ?
I thought it was payable either way.

OP posts:
Popworld · 24/07/2023 13:37

Yes. You pay for the course or you pay the fine

babygirl88 · 24/07/2023 13:37

My course was £91 pound. To pay the fine was £100. I also debated not doing it for the sake of £10 but the course doesnt affect insurance, no points etc

Bromptotoo · 24/07/2023 14:08

It depends on the insurer. Check what exactly your terms and conditions say. Most only require you to report convictions/points but last time I saw this it was not universal.

There was a period around 2015 when Admiral Group, which also includes several other brands, required you to advise and premium may be adjusted accordingly. I've an idea that dropped it later as others did not follow.

You'll almost certainly be better off with the course than points and you will learn a bit from the exrecises etc.

The course, unless something has changed recently, is an alternative to fine and points.

You will though have to pay for the course and the amount is very similar to what the fine would be - £100 ish.
