one of my friends has done something really really stupid. They got on a metro whilst chatting with a friend and forgot to buy a ticket and then got stopped at the other end they offered to pay but was asked to provide details and they panicked and gave false name and address, they then admitted it and gave their real name and address

they were told it was level 3 and a court letter would be coming

please no hate just looking for advice on what this might mean

hes a close friend and it probably came out as loud “for goodness sake” not full on shouting) because I’m worried for him,

It’s not just the evading the ticket it’s the giving false information

Just seen you're in Newcastle. It's really not a big deal at all. I have an acquaintance(mid 40s) who has never paid - if they take into account the fines they've received, they're still massively up on what they would've spent.

I also know people who received fines despite never having been on the metro which makes me think lots of people do give a fake address too.

Basically unless you're getting on or off at a city centre, nexus haven't really put many controls in place to make people pay. It's not like the London Underground!

Just let him ask the authority. What he has to do to clear his name

He can't clear his name coz he did it

ohfook · 02/07/2023 21:32

It reminds me of the time a guy I knew from uni got caught. He was asked his address & he gave it then he was asked to list all of the people who lived there (presumably to prove it was his address. He repeatedly failed to answer the second question correctly, apparently he'd missed one resident out and he couldn't think who it was. He was accused of giving a false address- it turned out it was because he'd forgotten to name himself as a resident of said address .

Why do people think this is me,im on here as I’m trying to help a worried friend

Because you seem so bothered about something that doesn't actually affect you. There's nothing to stop your worried friend seeking information for himself. He could even sign up to Mumsnet if he wanted it's advice so badly. So yes it makes everyone think there is no friend and it's you. Either that or its your live-in-boyfriend and you're sharing finances, so then the outcome could affect you and explain your worrying

I have diagnosed anxiety, does that clear it up for you??

No worries, I have done it once a long while ago (20 years). This is a scare tactic, you think they will put all the fare dodgers to court when they can't put the real criminal in court? Do you know how much it would cost them? They will however fine him and he will need to pay because I tried to dodge it (I thought I was smart, I moved house 🙄) and forgot about it but when I asked for a new oyster card 4 years ago they found me and I had to pay £140 and I got to say paying an underground fine at 40 is VERY embarrassing!

Irunoncoffeemascaraandhighheels · 02/07/2023 21:40

You'll need to learn how to not get so invested in other people's dramas then

It’s hardly

3AndStopping · 02/07/2023 21:46

It’s hardly the crime of the century! He should of just carried on with the false information & would of probably never heard again - Wally 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Hetti1 · 02/07/2023 22:00

Thankyou so much to everyone who has responded, there is some great information.

and as one poster made a reference to my anxiety, maybe I will try to be a friend but try not to get too involved

Tbh yes I think you have to let people sort their own mess

LaBefana · 02/07/2023 22:01

To be clear, a fine can only be issued by a court following a conviction. A penalty fare which a person might pay on the spot is not a 'fine', even though people may use the word. Neither is an out-of-court settlement which a person might be able to agree with the train company to avoid going to court and getting a criminal record.

This is very stupid and poor advice.

3AndStopping · 02/07/2023 22:11

@LaBefana I mean, not really. It makes more sense than lying then admitting to lying. 😂

Either he would have got away with it or got caught & punished for the exact same thing his admitted to anyway!

bonzaitree · 02/07/2023 22:41

OP, this doesn’t affect you and what he did really isn’t that bad.

you say you have anxiety- I think you might have overreacted to this information from your friend.
