one of my friends has done something really really stupid. They got on a metro whilst chatting with a friend and forgot to buy a ticket and then got stopped at the other end they offered to pay but was asked to provide details and they panicked and gave false name and address, they then admitted it and gave their real name and address

they were told it was level 3 and a court letter would be coming

please no hate just looking for advice on what this might mean

That they're an idiot?

What else would it mean?

For goodness sake I’m looking for some advice on the legal implications, they realise they have been an idiot

It means they will get a letter and a fine.

Readyplayerthr33 · 02/07/2023 20:48

You yes, not a friend?
You’ll be paying a fine.

Why did you give a false name and address? Just stupid.

Why doesn't 'your friend' just look on the website of whatever company runs the metro in their area? It'll have actual information about what could happen.

Thankyou for your response, it’s one of my male friends and he knows he’s done something very stupid, I don’t know anything about the metro as I don’t need it to get to work hence me coming on here!,

What country? What city? If you don't say that, you won't get any helpful advice.

Hetti1 · 02/07/2023 20:57

Why do people think this is me,im on here as I’m trying to help a worried friend

I'd suggest that he looks at their website under FAQ and find out what will happen.

They will be receiving a fine for two separate offences, fare evasion and giving a false name to an officer.

A level 3 fine can be up to £1,000 but if they have no previous convictions it will be unlikely to be more than £100.

BeverlyHa · 02/07/2023 21:02

Just let him ask the authority. What he has to do to clear his name

LaBefana · 02/07/2023 21:03

if it's the UK they may be able to respond to the letter, saying they understand they should have bought a ticket before boarding the train, and they panicked at the other end, they have learned that paying fares and answering questions honesty is important, and offering to pay the company's admin expenses and the fare due, as they would like to avoid going to court.

This is called asking for an out-of-court settlement. It is best to keep the letter short, avoiding sob stories about mental health, cost of living, etc (they have heard them all before). If this is a first offence there is a good chance they can keep out of court with a payment perhaps a bit more that £100.

Crikey 🤣

You shouted at a friend for evading a ticket?

Why are you so invested?

savethewales · 02/07/2023 21:17

I can't imagine Nexus will have the time or man power to deal with this as officially as some people think. It would have been a metro ticket inspector, not a police officer i imagine and their website says £100 fine. https://www.nexus.org.uk/metro/tickets/penalty-fares

Penalty Fares | nexus.org.uk

A Penalty Fare is £100 plus the price of the full single fare applicable for your intended journe

ohfook · 02/07/2023 21:19

Are you north east? Shit loads of people dodge paying. It's really not a big deal - you just get a fine.

hes a close friend and it probably came out as loud “for goodness sake” not full on shouting) because I’m worried for him,

I agree, if it was just that it’s that he initially provided false information

They'll get a fine and a criminal record. Open and shut case.
