Friend rang me in hysterics as husband taken away by Police for questioning

Friend has just rang me in hysterics to say they were sitting in a restaurant with family including kids. Husband patted 9 year old daughter on top of leg.

Sometime later Police came and spoke to friends husband, said that skmeone in restaurant rang Police to report that he had touched child inappropriately. Police took him away for questioning. Said they had checked restaurants CCTV and how they'd left uncomfortable.

Police said they would interview friend and daughter in the morning.

Apparently, my friend and husband always pat daughter on leg or bum as an sign of affection.

They will speak to child and my friend tomorrow and I think nothing will come of it. I known them over 25 years and know he is a good person.

It is inappropriate though. They will probably issue him with a warning rather than charge but he needs to stop, as does your friend.

CantFindTheBeat · 10/09/2022 23:23

How do they have CCTV of each table?

Can they really check a guest patting someone on the leg?

That's a good point.

I am sure there must be more to this OP. Where I live the police don't even turn up for a serious assault unless there is a gun involved or a dead body.

PickAChew · 10/09/2022 23:26

Why would you pat a child on the bum?

declutteringmymind · 10/09/2022 23:26

Hopefully that's all it was. But be prepared, just in case, that it's more than what it seems.

Of course it's likely to be an over enthusiastic person who has reported, but they may have seen something that has made them think that all is not as innocent as it seems. Your friend of course is distraught, but maybe partly because she might think it's true.

Hopefully it's nothing.

Ship · 10/09/2022 23:26

I agree - surely there is more to this? The police came due to a pat on the leg? Also a pat on the bum is weird and inappropriate so they ought to stop doing that

ganvough · 10/09/2022 23:27

Hmm. Isn't this practically identical to the fuss made about the Czech tennis player recently whose dad and coach patted her on the bum at the US Open.

Odd that the exact same thing has happened to your friend's DH so soon after that incident was in all the papers....

TheodoreMortlock · 10/09/2022 23:29

It is very unlikely that the police would arrest and interview someone for patting his own child's leg in a restaurant. I think you may need to consider that there is a little more to it than the friend is saying.

LizzieVereker · 10/09/2022 23:29

This doesn’t make sense. How would the restaurant or police know where they live? What’s the problem with a pat on the leg? (A pat in the bum would be weird, yes).

How is a pat on the leg inappropriate?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/09/2022 23:34

My dad used to touch my bum.

I wish someone had told him to stop.

Am glad the police are taking this seriously.

Exactly. Husband wasn't arrested. He's been taken to station for questioning.

Police turned up at restaurant just before they were leaving

There must be more to this , many parents pat or put their hands in their children's leg. It's also strange that the police turned up so quickly.

A warning for patting his daughter’s leg over her clothing?

Are you mental?

Must be more to it

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/09/2022 23:47

Police don't come and take someone to the station for questioning when someone pats a child's leg. It just simply doesn't happen. So it's either made up (what I think) or your friend is minimising (possible) or he's got form and was doing more than patting (probably not).

She means that this did not happen, it is made-up by someone either bored or hoping to get into the Daily Mail.
