Job Offer withdrawn after informing employer that I am pregnant.

Hi all,

I originally posted this on as a pregnancy thread. As the situation has evolved I have been advised to post on here. I was offered a job yesterday afternoon and although I know I was under no obligation to inform them, I told the employer that I was expecting in December. Since then I have had the job offer withdrawn as they felt that I “misled them” and wasn’t honest. Is anyone able to give me some advice if I were to take this further.

Good luck!

Also admittedly have not RTFT yet but to anyone who thinks this is in any way understandable - no decent employer would want you to mention this in case they didn’t hire you and might seem to have discriminated.

TriangleBingoBongo · 06/05/2020 06:51

Good luck for today OP!

You’ve totally got this!!!!

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/05/2020 07:01

Good luck op. I missed out on a job while i was pregnant. I am certain it's because i was pregnant. I wish id challenged it back then.

concernedforthefuture · 06/05/2020 07:17

Good luck - you've got this 🍀

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 06/05/2020 07:21

The same thing happened to me OP, I was told by DH not to pursue it since I was 'wasting time'. Wish I did now. Good luck x

amymel2016 · 06/05/2020 07:24

Good luck OP!

GeraltOfRivia · 06/05/2020 07:35

Good luck today. I've just read all your thread. It's a long time since I did employment law but you sound like you're in a strong position. Take care, and if you're feeling nerves just take your time answering and speaking.

mrsmummy111 · 06/05/2020 08:04

How arrogant must these people be to so openly and brazenly discriminate in that way, without even an attempt to hide it. Now they're crapping themselves as they obviously never expected anyone to challenge them, so good for you for pursuing it. You deserve every penny you get when you win (which you will)

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/05/2020 08:07

I remember this thread from last year. I can't believe it hasn't been settled yet! Well done for persevering with it!

Rosieredapples · 06/05/2020 08:09

Good luck to you, I was really pleased to see these updates as I remembered this thread and it had me so cross on your behalf when I read it last year.
I can't believe how they expect to get away with how they've treated you.
Sending you all the positive vibes !!!!!!!!

BadJanetsMobile · 06/05/2020 08:10

Good luck op please update us!! Ive been invested in this from the start!! And cant believe they so brazenly withdrew your offer and tried to backtrack on reasons even though you had email communication

Well done Flowers

ellesbellesxxx · 06/05/2020 08:12

Sexnotgender · 06/05/2020 08:12

heinztomatosoup · 06/05/2020 08:34

Good luck today! You're doing it for fair treatment for yourself but also for all the women that will face this situation. Wishing you all the best

I’ve just read the thread and from an employers view what a nightmare. It was unfair you wasn’t honest.

I do have some empathy I was screwed over on my return to work after Dd, I’d been there ten years. But you never contributed to one day at the company.

I find it shocking and unfair tbh. When your desperate to fill a role in your company you have to go through the interview process, set time for each one, secondary interviews, wait for references all of which take time and eat in to productivity. Someone else will be picking that slack up. Then to find some who doesn’t disclose they could be off up to a year relatively soon so you have to start the whole process again is a nightmare and totally unfair.

Not cool. And no I don’t think this is protecting women I think it just leads to mistrust of taking women on.

I hope it’s a big fuck of company that can cope with the £££££ your expecting for not even doing a single day - as you might be the reason for some one being laid off or the business going under. Jesus what a time to be doing this.

DizzyCow63 · 06/05/2020 08:49

Thinking of you and wishing you luck this morning OP 🤞

showmethegin · 06/05/2020 08:50

@Summersunandoranges What? You do realise it's illegal what they have done?

MamaNewtNewt · 06/05/2020 08:54

I've just found this thread and wanted to say good luck to you. You have been tested appallingly and fair play to you for standing up and refusing to accept it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/05/2020 08:55

Summersunandoranges

If she was the best person for the job she should have been recruited. Withdrawing an offer based on pregnancy is illegal. It is a protected characteristic.

ivfgottostaypositive · 06/05/2020 08:56

I've been pregnant I "get" it.

BUT having read the full thread I'm uncomfortable lauding the OP as the saviour of women's rights whilst pregnant

She will have done more damage than good with this - you realise this company will NEVER employ a woman of child bearing age again?
