Neighbours have put cat spikes along fence - what are my rights?

Sherridale71 · 02/06/2018 06:19

My next door neighbours, two spinster sisters, have put sharp plastic spikes intermittently along the fence surrounding their back garden. The spikes are in strips of about 5cm long and they’ve placed them on either side of the concrete posts holding the fence up with big gaps in between. The fence separating our gardens is about 4m high.
I’m so angry about this that I haven’t been able to approach them to find out why they’ve done it although I’m pretty sure it’s to deter cats from going into their garden (I’ve read that they can also be a pigeon deterrent). We have two beautiful cats so I’m disgusted about this and worried that they’re going to injure themselves. We live in a neighbourhood that has many cats roaming around so they’re a danger to them as well.
My neighbours have made comments in the past about cats “crapping in the garden” and also told me last year that if they saw my new kitten in their garden they would “boot it”.
I’ve phoned citizens’ advice but they said I’d need to contact my landlady to determine who owns the border of the garden and said I’d need to speak to a solicitor as they can’t give legal advice...the internet is coming up with all sorts of confusing information.
Does anyone know what my rights are before I go and speak to them about it? My 5 year old son could easily hurt himself on them.
TIA

On the off chance that an OP this stupid and obnoxious is real...

OP if you're worried about your son getting to them, I'd put a taller fence round your own garden, tall enough to cover the spikes. That way your son won't be able to get to them.

slashlover · 02/06/2018 10:14

I have an (indoor) cat, I love my cat. I can understand why someone wouldn't want cat shit all over their garden.

I like dogs, hate it when people let their dogs shit and then don't clean it up. I can understand why someone wouldn't want dog shit all over their garden.

I like babies. I can understand why someone wouldn't want dirty nappies all over their garden.

Also, it may not even just be OPs cats who go into the NDN garden. There could be multiple neighbourhood cats in there.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 02/06/2018 10:16

Sorry but this is an excellent idea other people’s cats and cat shit are an absolute pain. I hate other people’s cats roaming around my garden. I have children and a dog and I would be mortified if my dog or children were roaming around other people’s garden, shitting in people’s gardens and other people were then having to pick up my dogs or my children’s shit.

llangennith · 02/06/2018 10:17

OP has left the building!

greathat · 02/06/2018 10:17

Love the response from op. Hope it doesn't get deleted it can stay as a lesson to us all!

RaininSummer · 02/06/2018 10:18

I like cats but I like my plants and birds more which is why I dont have a cat. If I had neighbours cats in my garden a lot I would get these too.

ThisCannotBe · 02/06/2018 10:19

@hellsbellscockleshells another marvelous idea, I am de-pantsing my kid as we speak and letting him have it.

Onceuponatimethen · 02/06/2018 10:19

thanks so much for coming on as the voice of reason cat neuterer - I’m actually pretty shocked people are flossing over ndn threat to ‘boot’ a kitten Shock and guessing it’s fhose comments that have made op fearful.

Onceuponatimethen · 02/06/2018 10:20

Flossing SmileGrin

I mean glossing!

MargaretCavendish · 02/06/2018 10:27

OP if you're worried about your son getting to them, I'd put a taller fence round your own garden, tall enough to cover the spikes. That way your son won't be able to get to them.

If she does this she's also likely to give the cats a place where they can jump up and down into NDNs' garden avoiding the spikes, which is going to antagonise them no end.

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 02/06/2018 10:29

True... although I think our obnoxious dick of an OP would see that as a real positive. Maybe she could put some thorny plants round them too.

MargaretCavendish · 02/06/2018 10:32

True... although I think our obnoxious dick of an OP would see that as a real positive.

Possibly, but it's her cats I'm worried about! I think someone who has already threatened to kick a kitten might try more drastic measures if OP deliberately sabotages their attempts to keep the cats out harmlessly.

popcorneveryminute · 02/06/2018 10:50

Well I'm glad I'm not your neighbour OP!

And that's as someone with two small children and a neighbour who gives no fucks about the fact her cats roam around my garden constantly, shitting everywhere and jumping all over my car.

If only I could find spikes for my car bonnet Smile

twotallgiraffes · 02/06/2018 11:04

Cats are shady.
I'm just sorry I missed the update.

KittenBeast · 02/06/2018 11:18

Aww, hunni, your cat your rules! They're just jealous!

I think this was the response OP was after.

AtrociousCircumstance · 02/06/2018 11:18

What was the OP’s crazed response? It’s been deleted but I want to know Grin

I love cats. I hate all the cat shit in our garden.

Anyone got any tips to deter them? Have tried grinding black pepper and have heard citrus water helps? Anything else?

MiddlingMum · 02/06/2018 11:19

Oh no, I missed the OPs update before it was deleted.

I like cats. Just not cats which poo in my garden.

KittenBeast · 02/06/2018 11:34

Oh no! I had quoted it further on up but even that's been deleted. OP said we were all horrible nasty bastards or some such, and that we need to have a look at ourselves or words to that effect.

Jammycustard · 02/06/2018 11:39

She called everyone a Richard Head and that she would have the thread deleted.

Bluelonerose · 02/06/2018 11:56

Op not sure if you're still reading but ANY threat towards a cat needs to be reported immediately.

Cats protection league take threats like that seriously.

Lynnm63 · 02/06/2018 12:07

If MNHQ delete this they may as well give up the pretence of not deleting threads willy nilly.
There is no privacy issue, even Sherlock Holmes couldn’t work out who she was from I have a cat and ndn sisters have put up cat spikes, and no abuse except from the OP.
The only reason she could cite is you’re all being so mean to me waaaah. NOT a reason to delete a thread imo.

You do know that the Cats protection league is a charity and not some sort of armed militia?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 02/06/2018 12:18

" You do know that the Cats protection league is a charity and not some sort of armed militia? "

Grin thanks now I have this image of a troop of cats in berets, with machine guns...
