Fell off water slide on holiday?

cheekymonk · 11/08/2017 19:05

Hi there. Have just returned from holiday on the Canaries and whilst there visited the obligatory water park. I had been on several slide whilst there, not consumed any alcohol
And had taken regular breaks and had top on to avoid sunburn. Whilst I was riding on a four ring ride with my DH, DS and DD I fell out of my tyre and hurtled out of the slide at speed, banging my head, losing a fair bite of blood and suffering amnesia. The lifeguards were attentive and I was cared for until an ambulance arrived. I was then taken to hospital and had an overnight stay. I was given 6 stitches and on an IV drop as
Not allowed food or food drink due to possible scan the following day(not done). I had an X-ray and was then certified fit to fly by Dr. I had travel insurance and paid the excess.
My query is whether the park was negligent? The attendants kept us waiting at top of slide for approx 10 mins. I am very obese and I think they were unsure about allowing me to ride. However I had been on an identical ride previously and been ok and the wait made me more anxious and weaker as they kept telling me off and to hold on tighter and keep my back straight. I struggled to do this for the time they kept us waiting which was much longer than others.
My head is painful and I feel the holiday was ruined by the experience. Not sure what to do? Any suggestions?

By your own admission the longer you waited the weaker and more anxious you felt yet you still continued. How the hell is that the fault of the organisers.

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2017 22:42

You were a fat fucking idiot

Whoa, this isn't ok, it's a serious personal attack and totally unjustified. Yes she knew rhe weight limit, yes she knew she was over, yes she knew she didn't have the muscle strength, yes she chose to go ahead anyway, yes she then decided rhe staff were at fault for her decisions, even though she admits she had more info than them, but still insulting her about her behaviour isn't warranted.

Popchyk · 11/08/2017 22:44

"If I had known so wasn't strong enough for the ride I would have got off".

So you bear no responsibility in regards to your own body but the staff at the park do? You are not aware of how weak you are, but they should be aware of how weak you are?

What makes you think that? Genuine question.

cheekymonk · 11/08/2017 22:44

Jeez, I'm saying that the staff knew that the ride was high octane as you state. You wouldn't let a child that couldn't swim jump in the deep end of a pool. I didn't know the ride needed me to hold on for sheer bloody life. Of course I knew it would be fast but not that fast and not so much worse than the other rides! I had been on about 6/7 slides at that point with no issues! How was I supposed to know?

Cheeky, I never gave compensation a thought and my replies to you have only ever been the replies of one overweight woman to another.

Im sorry. I really am. But you cannot pass the buck on this. You're unfit and overweight and you're a danger to yourself and others when it comes to theme parks and water rides.

Go ahead, Cheekymonk. You sue 'em. Keep us updated how you get on.

Venusflytwat · 11/08/2017 22:45

How could the ride operators possibly know whether you, a stranger, were strong enough to hold on?

If your core strength is insufficient for you to hold your body weight against gravity for 60 seconds then you shouldn't have gone on the ride.

There is no physiological mechanism I can think of why sitting in a rubber ring waiting for a few minutes would cause muscular weakness.

The wait did not cause your problem. Your lack of ability to hold your own weight against increased force did.

I'm sorry for your injury but there is not a case here.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 11/08/2017 22:46

And the fat insults continue it seems....Angry

cheekymonk · 11/08/2017 22:46

A fat fucking idiot with a degree I'll have you know 😉

OP posts:
MadMags · 11/08/2017 22:46

But you sat there for 10 minutes getting steadily weaker. You could have gotten off then.

Edsheeranalbumparty · 11/08/2017 22:46

How can 2/3 of the way down be the highest point?

The videos that have been linked show the ride. I have been on Kinnaree and the part of the slide in question is really steep and you do feel like you might fall out, but then again I thought that was the point!

Calling the OP a 'fat fucking idiot' is really fucking out of order.

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2017 22:47

g!! If I had known so wasn't strong enough for the ride I would have got off

But yet you expect them to know? Did you not look at the ride before you got on? Honestly it feels like your clutching t straws now.

I do heed your point Rhubarb. This is most definitely my last morbidly obese Summer.

I dont believe this and Im sorry if that upsets you but I don't believe for a minute that a person doesnt have some kind of idea regarding a ride before they get on it. I think you just decided to go for it anyway, perhaps evens so your family wasn't disappointed. I think you just thought - I'll be ok.

Edsheeranalbumparty · 11/08/2017 22:49

Wow PunnetSquare what is your problem?

Starlight2345 · 11/08/2017 22:49

Going back to my original post, at no point did I suggest seeking compensation from the park. This was meant to be a simple query of whether the park was negligent or not

You posted in legal..You didn't ask if there was a health and safety to look at incident..

but if lessons can be learned from what happened, either by me or the park, then surely it must be worth doing something about it this is even a line from if there is blame there is a claim advert.

Terfing · 11/08/2017 22:50

I hope you're okay OP? It sounds like a painful accident. Flowers

MN can be a brutal place to post and many of the posts here are out of orderAngry

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 11/08/2017 22:50

Me too OP. Im off home tomorrow after 3 weeks away that hasn't involved a water ride apart from crossing car parks in rural Scotland during a shower that was actually a deluge. This time xext year I will be very different.

Maybe we'll meet on weight loss threads.

Good luck Flowers

MissEliza · 11/08/2017 22:50

You are really clutching at straws to make a case for negligence and therefore compensation. You have no idea what the lifeguards were saying. My guess is that they were discussing whether it was clear at the other end.

Miserylovescompany2 · 11/08/2017 22:51

@PunnetSquare - NO EXCUSE FOR BEING VILE!

I hope Punnet is banned for that. Absolutely disgusting.

Popchyk · 11/08/2017 22:56

OP, if the staff had prevented you from getting on the ride because you are obese, you would be on here shouting about how unfair it is. And how discriminatory they are.

We all have to take responsibility for our own lives. Look at your opening post "whilst there visited the obligatory water park".

It wasn't obligatory. You were not marched there with machine guns pointed at your necks.

You chose to go there.

Also perhaps your "weakness" was less to do with waiting for 10 minutes than the 6/7 rides that you had been on immediately beforehand. And you chose to go on those 6/7 rides before you decide that the park is negligent for making you go on them.
