Recently found out we're pregnant with number 4, bit of a surprise and tbh we're not entirely sure what to do
The biggest issue being space

We live in a 3 bed, atm the eldest 2 have their own rooms and the baby is still in with us, we may have to get an extension just to give the baby a bedroom so no idea where we would put a 4th
How do you all work it with multiple children? Do you all live in mansions?

8 people in a 4-bed house:
Room 1 (average size): Me + OH
Room 2 (quite big): DD age 6 + DTDs age 5
Room 3 (smaller): DD age 14 + DD age 10
Room 4 (box): DS age 16

But we are planning an extension, building work will start in a couple of works so then will hopefully be:

8 people in a 5-bed house:
Room 1 (average size): Me + OH
Room 2 (quite big): DD age 10 + DD age 6
Room 3 (smaller): DTDs age 5
Room 4 (box): DS age 16
Room 5 (box): DD age 14

  • we'll have a small study/office space for me as I work from home quite a lot! (very excited)

Not planning any more kids though as I'm 43

7 (soon to be 8) here in a 4 bed - 2 average double rooms and 2 very small awkward single rooms. Eldest is 17 so has a room to herself, next dd also has room to herself and 3 boys are sharing (5, 4 and 2 - youngest still in cotbed). Baby will sleep in with is until at least a year. Have just bought 2 sets of bunk beds for the boys rooms and dd2 has a high sleeper with wardrobe/desk etc built in under it in her room otherwise would be screwed for storage in there.

Honestly space is tight but if our bedrooms were bigger or if we owned the house and could restructure upstairs layout then 4 bedrooms would be very manageable I think, at least until they all hit their teens, not sure how the house will survive this many people in fully-grown form!!

123bananas · 01/01/2017 21:58

3dc's in a 3 bed here.

Dd1 (7) and dd2 (4) share the largest. We have the middle sized room and ds the smallest.

Hope to convert the garage into a room + ensuite for DH and I before dd1 hits her teens so they can all have their own rooms. The girls already argue all the time I am not sure I could handle them sharing when the hormones kick in.

Sofabitch · 01/01/2017 22:00

4 Dcs here. 2 girls in 1 room. 2 boys in the other and us in a third.

They don't need their own rooms.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 01/01/2017 22:09

5DCs. 3 bedrooms. 3 (age 12,12,9) in the biggest room. 2 (age17, 14) in the smallest room. Us in the middle room.

It works though as they've gotten older and huger the house seems a lot smaller now!

missyB1 · 01/01/2017 22:09

4 bedrooms one ds age 7, two older ones grown up and left home. So DH and I in master bedroom, ds in a double room, which leaves one double and a single as spares. I would give anything to have had a fourth child to be in one of those rooms, but it never happened.

MrTumblesbitch · 01/01/2017 22:10

I have a 3 bed house.

DS sleeps in with me and we visit the other rooms hopefully little sod Grin

MollyHuaCha · 01/01/2017 22:14

At a school I taught at there were many large families living in tiny homes. Typically two and occasionally three primary age children would share a single bed.

RueDeWakening · 01/01/2017 22:26

We moved to our current, 6-bed house when I was expecting DS1, who is a surviving triplet - we'd have had nowhere for them to sleep in our former home which was a tiny end of terrace.

As it stands, DD has her own room, DS1 and DS2 share the 2nd bedroom, and DH and I have the master bedroom. There's a small bedroom on the 1st floor that we don't use much, and 2 spare bedrooms in the attic although one is set up for work and doesn't have a bed in it.

MunchyMunchkin · 01/01/2017 22:26

Growing up we were 6 kids in a 4 bed. (Number 6 cane among when I was in 6th form so we weren't that many for long)
Mum and stepdad in master
2 sisters in one room
Me and another sister plus the toddler once he wasn't in with mum
Brother in box room.
Every time someone leaves (for uni) there is a reshuffle.
Currently 3 kids at home with a room each and then when bunks in when home from uni.
It's even worse when I'm visiting, we were rammed in at Xmas.

I only have 1DC and we just moved to a 5 bed house, completely excessive as I only want 1 more dc.

emilysgoddard · 04/01/2017 13:15

afternoon all,
i'm a freelance journalist and i am trying to find particularly large families or families with multiple generations living under one roof in modest houses, with people sharing bedrooms for a photo story i am researching for. it's a feel good piece that aims to show how modern families are living happily together and maybe not with loads of money but are enjoying life all the same. i hope you get what i mean.
is anyone on here interested in taking part? please feel free to get in touch with me if you would like more information.
many thanks in advance,
emily x

We have 4 children, 2 adults. Kids are ds 17, ds15, ds 14and dd12. We have 4 bedroomed house but the kids all wanted their own rooms as they got older so we turned the downstairs front room ( which was previously a play room/ junk room ) into a bedroom which eldest ds has. It means we are a bit cramped downstairs with a lounge / diner but we considered it not too much of a sacrifice to give the kids their own rooms. The two middle boys used to share a room when they were younger.

delawar · 06/02/2017 15:02

We have 8 ppl in a old 3 bed house , currently dds aged 19,17,12 largest room
Ds's in next room 15,5 and me Hubble in next sized room with the 2 yr dd
We can't afford to upgrade or extend so we manage

mumof1000s · 15/10/2017 06:57

Dd14 had the box room, ds15 has a double room. The master bedroom is being made into 2 rooms for dss11 and dss12, we will be in the sitting room till we can get the garage converted.

SP00KYLilBucket1 · 18/10/2017 11:10

4 dc. 4 bed house. Me and OH have one room. Dd has another. Ds1 has his own room and ds3 will share a room with 3 month old once he moves into the cot.

walkingbootsaremuddy · 19/10/2017 08:53

3 bedrooms, 5 children.
DS 21 in box room (has epilepsy)
DS 18 , DS 10 room 2
DD 6 with me and OH in room 3
DS 16 on the settee

yaela123 · 21/10/2017 21:30

We have 8 people (6DC) in a 4 bed house, but have been saving up for an extension, building work to start in about a month (touch wood) so will have 1 extra bedroom then.

So atm it is:

Mid-sized room: Me and DH
Box room: DS (17)
Mid-sized room: DD (15) and DD (10)
Big-ish room: DD (7), DD (5) and DD (5) (twins)

And soon (hopefully) should be:

Mid-sized room: Me and DH
Box room: DS (17)
Box room (new): DD (15)
Mid-sized room: DD (10) and DD (7)
Big-ish room: DD (5) and DD (5) (twins)

Montsti · 22/10/2017 23:34

We have 4 dc in a 6 bedroom house so all the kids have their own bedroom + our bedroom and the guest bedroom downstairs. We're lucky that 5 of the bedrooms have ensuites too - just the newborn who doesn't...obviously not a problem yet!

firawla · 28/10/2017 23:20

We have 4, and had a 3 bed house but did a loft conversion during the pregnancy which made 2 bedrooms and an extra bathroom so now we have a 5 bed house and a room for each of the dc. Much cheaper and less upheaval than moving!

franktheskank · 10/12/2017 23:35

I have 7 dc with another one the way.

We live in a 6/7 bedroom house , 6 really as I use one as my dressing roomBlush

We're having the loft converted next year, hoping to fit at least 3 more bedrooms up there as it covers the whole area of the house, then they can all have their own room or if we have more they'll only have to share with one sibling.

euanthesheepiloveyou · 11/12/2017 14:00

Sounds like a good plan Frank. Being nosey here but how do you do it - financially I mean? Do you both work? We're both full time professionals but I feel like we're the squeezed middle (!!) & I'm just conscious of how expensive things will be later on with school trips & all the expense of secondary school & beyond. Only asking as we have 6 & I'd love one more...I just think that would tip us over the edge!! They all have their own bedroom as I know they wouldn't want to share when they're a bit older. We have an 8 seater & would have to look for a 9 seater...there's lots of reasons why I'm thinking that we should stick at 6! Always interested to hear how other big families do it. I know one other family with 9 kids but can't really compare as neither of them work so are both on benefits.

franktheskank · 11/12/2017 16:22

Dh owns his own business (plant machinery)and I own several businesses and a few properties that I let out.

I cane into some money years ago and invested it wisely, bought our house outright, so that frees up a lot of money for doing stuff to the house and other things.

Still not been abroad for years though, I would t consider it with this many childrenGrin

franktheskank · 11/12/2017 16:25

We have a 7 sweater and Dh has a 5 sweater but we would like to get a minibus but I haven't found one that I like the look of yet. There all a bit too mini bus looking😂
