How many ttc #4 and ended up with twins?

buttonmoon78 · 11/10/2010 15:02

We're currently trying to conceive #4 but I'm slightly freaked out by chances being increased of conceiving twins! (Age, previous pgs etc)

I know of one couple this has happened to (friends of friends) but how much is the chance increased really?

Has anyone got any experience of this?

Not number 4 but number 5 became 5 & 6, however I wouldn't change a thing.
Good luckSmile

Lavitabellissima · 11/10/2010 15:15

My dr told me a friend of hers was trying to conceive number 3 and had triplets making 5 children!

I wouldn't worry too much Smile

I'm having identical twin girls in 5 weeks Grin

idobelieveinfairies · 11/10/2010 15:43

My 5th was babies 5 & 6...and then our 7th was 7 & 8 Grin and i was young... 26 when i had the first set and no twins in the family!!!

It happens!!!

juuule · 11/10/2010 15:53

9 children - no multiples - and I was old (last 2 at 40 and almost 44)

TotorosOcarina · 11/10/2010 15:54

fairies - are there twins in your family,

am expecting number 4 and am 26 and slightly freaked by your post!

idobelieveinfairies · 11/10/2010 15:57

Nope-no twins anywhere....but it has to start somewhere!!!! Grin

TotorosOcarina · 11/10/2010 16:28

er yes well, not here I hope Grin

throckenholt · 11/10/2010 16:38

I know lots of families of 4 or more and can only think of two with twins - one where there 2&3 were twins (went on to have more), and one where they wanted just one more and got two.

My twins are numbers 2&3 (out of 3) - identical which can happen to anyone and is not related to age or family.

buttonmoon78 · 11/10/2010 21:30

Righto. I think the mumnet jury has spoken overwhelmingly that whilst it may be more likely (scientific evidence) it is not enough to warrant this level of freaking out!

Thanks all.

happened to me - and wasn't ttc. Generally been fine, though.

kennythekangaroo · 11/10/2010 22:45

Don't want to worry you but I knew someone who went for number 4 and ended up with quads!

buttonmoon78 · 11/10/2010 22:58

Oh, I geddit. Just when I'm feeling better you all come out of the woodwork Wink

Well, the deed is done for this month anyway! I don't think it's really enough of a freakout to put me off having #4 it was just a little concern.

After all, having twins wouldn't be the end of my life, it would just be a complication I hadn't banked on. And, as with everything else, you get on a deal with whatever life throws at you, no?

I hope I'm worrying about nothing though! Grin

Twins are fab...hard work in the first few weeks..but very very rewarding, and it's lovely seeing them when they are a bit older...always some to play/fight with.

Good luck with it all and let us know if it's a singleton, twins...or triplets Grin

buttonmoon78 · 12/10/2010 12:43

Gah! Don't say that! I'm only just recovering from shock of realising that for the purposes, I've had 4 pgs as I've had one mc which still counts. And your chances increase if you've had 4 pgs! I'm not ready for twins or triplets!

And breathe...

What is the evidence of increased likelihood of twins with older age? Is it an "increased chance" but the increase is from about 0.8% to 1.2%, for example?

I didn't know that about number of pregnancies though.

Just wondering.

And I do know someone in her 20s who went for number 4 and got 4&5 (identical). She sadly had lots of miscarriages (about 5 I think) so did fall into the lots of pregnancies category.

buttonmoon78 · 12/10/2010 13:43

If you look on a lot of the TAMBA etc websites it says that the chances are something like 1.5% normally. It goes up somewhat after 30 but really increases after 35 (I'm in the former category). Apparently, something Shock like 19% of all pgs after 45 end up with twins! I can't remember what the figure was for chances inc after more previous pgs but they were significant.

I think the most I got to, looking at all the websites was about 5% in my case, but having conceived two 0.01% babies (on the pill, no illness, none missed etc) I find my place is often in the minority. And not just in this case!

Am building this waaay up into something it isn't and I probably won't, it just surprised me when I saw the stats!

Kennythekangaroo - A friend of mine used to live here then moved back to the USA with her 4 children. Evidently they decided to ttc again and ended up with quads (2 pairs of identical twins). I was PMSL when the Christmas card with photo of the family came, though I don't know how she does it!

buttonmoon78 · 12/10/2010 13:58

Aargh. Time to step away from the laptop.

I wonder what the statistical chances of that are though?

One friend went for number 3, had 3&4.

Another went for number 2, had 2&3.

But not heard of 4&5, yet.

And i don't want it happening to me (expecting DC3 now but always hoped for 4)!!

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 19/10/2010 16:39

We went for number 3, and got 3&4.

idobelieveinfairies · 16/11/2010 12:30

There are no twins in my family's history and i was 24 and 29 when i had my 2 sets..so sometimes it does just happen Grin.

I read that the reason for the increases risk if twins after having a lot of singleton pregnancies is basically because the mum is usually older, it's more to do with age i think.

With my second set, twin no.2 was actually conceived 2 weeks after i concieved twin 1 according to the dating scan!

buttonmoon78 · 22/11/2010 19:49

How strange, Idobelieve

Well, I have tested +ve so am officially with child! I have been feeling nauseous all day but ds currently has horrid bug so whether it's that or not I don't know. I never usually have nausea...

The timing is fairly rubbish as DH has just lost his job. It's all a bit Confused really.

TBH it's taken 24 hrs to feel excited but I'm getting there...!
