Trump and Tariffs ....what are your feelings?

So investments are taking a hit and I am intending to ride it out. Looking at maybe a year to recoup losses

What are your feelings and is anyone rebalancing a portfolio in anticipation of a trade war?

Lots of people would say now is possibly a good time to buy, you get more for your money at low prices.

But my feeling is there is a way to go yet before we hit bottom.

I wouldn't invest for five years. You would need 10 years or more for a good return unless you are lucky.

That would be my take.

I think I'd be more inclined to say go for it if you feed in the money gradually, I wouldn't put in a large sum right now as I do think we aren't yet at the bottom

Annoyingsquirrels · 07/04/2025 09:24

The price of US stocks is not low yet though. The PE ratio even after the recent falls is very high. I would wait until after earnings season to invest when companies forecast the impacts of tariffs future earnings

SomethingSScintillating · 07/04/2025 14:08

Don't sell and if you are tempted too really I would re think being invested at all m

If I had spare cash I would be buying right now.

Also you don't rely on one type of income, you need other types of income to rely on so you don't have to draw on your money whilst it's low.

I'm gutted because when it soared after trump took office I was going to skim a little off and I was too slow

Reallyannoyedwithpitaboss · 08/04/2025 18:15

Yeah my pension has lost thousands when it was looking healthy a few weeks back. Obviously will
hand fire as what goes down comes back up . In theory I should be in lower risk funds due to my age but I have no clue what trump is thinking. Anyone got any insights?

I bought some BARC yesterday for mine and DS Isas; closed up 5% today so I’m pleased to have locked some in at a cheaper price. I also bought and sold a separate tranche of BARC for DS; only made £300 profit, but it’s better than a kick up the arse. I’ve put the proceeds into a managed US fund; it’s for DS, so long term and again I’m buying at quite a low. UK market closed up a small amount today.

LifeD1lemma · 09/04/2025 07:54

I’m in it for the long haul with investments as currently 25 years off retirement and it’s 12 and 14 years before the kids go to uni. My ISA and kids ISAs are down (global trackers) but I think I might buy separately into S&P and Europe (excl U.K.) trackers over the next few days and see how we go.

My DD’s child trust fund is about to mature. We paid in tiny amounts and up to £100 times be offs where we could over nearly 18 years. It’s in its final “conservative investments” stage. It’s just lost £900 and it will mature before it has a chance to recover.

Same here and I’m absolutely gutted. I’ve only found out this weekend that my provider removed the “life styling” option so there was no move to safer investments. I’d be happy to let it sit there and recover but as far as I’m aware it must be cashed out in a few weeks regardless.

Your child doesn't have to cash it in though. It can be converted to an ISA.

Oh I didn’t know that! Thanks.

LovelySG · 09/04/2025 08:30

Ride it out.

My stocks and shares ISA (globally diversified index fund + 20% S&P + 30% bonds) is down £14k.

We plan to start drawing on it when we retire in 4.5 years time to bridge us until our state pensions kick in 2 and 4 years after that.

I’m hoping everything will balance out over this time frame.

lljkk · 09/04/2025 08:33

I dont' have somewhere better to put the funds & I didn't plan to draw on that investment for another 10 years, anyway.

Annoyingsquirrels · 09/04/2025 09:41

Let's just hope it isn't like the 1929 crash which took 25 years to recover from.

This one is in the hands of 1 man, who will hopefully not be president for more than 4 years. (I hear he's got a potential workaround for the 4 year rule).

Sell now and put the cash in a short term money market fund, currently paying 4.5%.

I'm hearing that money market funds are under pressure due to a backlash by foreign investors selling off formerly safe US Treasury bonds, bringing back memories of the fire sale that took place in response to Liz Truss's policies.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 09/04/2025 10:39

Somebody needs to have an improved aim next time!

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 09/04/2025 21:29

Well. I'm here because I'm a first time investor and bought some government bonds and shares in a low risk portfolio over 5 years. I'm really nervous as the sum I invested has dropped and it's hard not to panic.

morninall · 10/04/2025 09:02

So, now that markets have rallied, did anyone here make a bob or two by selling high and buying low? My understanding is that you would need to be in the privileged position of having a broker on the end of a phone line to be able to react quickly to the sorts of events we've seen in recent days, so short selling is not for amateurs. My investments are in Vanguard global tracker funds, and buying/selling seems to take a few days.

Cecilly · 10/04/2025 09:27

I am holding my investments and not selling (even though they have tanked and I have lost thousands thanks to Trump) but will not be investing anymore for the time being. It’s just too volatile and the risk is too high for me. I’m going to just wait and see.

Yep. I made a paltry (in the scheme of things) £300 in one account for DS by buying and then selling BARC. That's not shorting, though.

I also bought some more BARC and KO for myself; both up now, so a paper profit but I'll hold onto these as they're good dividend payers.

If you hold the stock directly via a platform like HL, it's just a click of the button to buy and sell, so pretty immediate.

LifeD1lemma · 10/04/2025 19:03

My ISAs have recovered today from down about 5% to up 1%. No plans to cash them in any time soon so it’s meaningless really.

mids2019 · 12/04/2025 11:16

I think there are many many wealthier friends of Trump from in effect legal insider trading. I really do think there is something of the old fashioned crook about Trump so his decision making will appear eratice but will obviously benefit anyone with prior knowledge of his decisions

I wonder if a future president may try and file charges but I doubt it
