Oh Christ I'm unexpectedly wealthy

Not a stealth boast but a cry for help.

I'm a normal middle class person. I'm approaching 60, been retired 5 years.

Fuck knows how but my business has grown beyond what I ever anticipated. Like into what to me is stupid money. I'm talking millions.

What the fuck do I do?

I'm no wheeler-dealer. Never bought a stock or a share in my life. I buy clothes off eBay and material things don't make me happy but dopamine does ! (ADHD) so maybe stock market might be exciting for a while.

Do i set up a charity? Buy shit I dont want or need? My lovely adult kids don't want money. My financial advisor keeps telling me "pension", but honestly my business is my pension and it keeps growing.

Do I go round handing out cash?

I'm a normal m/c intellectual who never ever set out or expected to be, wealthy.

The world Food programme desperately needs money to feed starving people in Yemen, it is a great charity as it is run by the UN and you can specify where your donation goes. They also have the school feeding progamme that builds schools in many countries in the world, children who would otherwise not be fed and would not necessarily go to school because they need to work get fed at school and in doing so get an education

I've been awake for what is looking like my fourth night due to money worries that don't even tally into a four figure mark and I've been scrolling to numb my brain and come across this 😣 swear the universe is laughing at me

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 22/05/2021 23:02

@awesomekillick
How about setting up some kind of charitable situation to help fund mental health in the uk?

Our mental health system is at an all time over rammed and people are choosing death over life because there simply aren't enough resources available at short notice to help.

I know there are lots of charities but they never have enough funds to stretch to everyone Sad

In my are alone there have been seven suicides in young people under 21 in the last month. 7 Shock

If I came into that much money I would definitely set up something to start to combat suicides in young people op

I'm sorry about your money worries. I really hope they resolve and you can sleep again soon. But I have to say that MN is the last place I'd visit to avoid people who who talk about their money/high standard of living etc!

(And of course that's not a dig at the, OP who has come here for advice on how to actually help people with hers)

Suzi888 · 22/05/2021 23:14

Let me just pm you my bank details 🤭🤣🤣🤣
Just enjoy it, invest it or whatever you like!
Buy charities equipment they need rather than give them money as pretty much all of them are corrupt!
Congratulations on your business!

Sarahsteedman · 22/05/2021 23:16

The idea of perhaps bumping the pay of anyone you employ sounds like a great idea, maybe supporting a smaller local charity which means something to you, even though your children don't want money etc maybe investing in a good size but of land with options around what can and can't be done on it may be a great idea, treat yourself to something you have always wanted, doesn't even need to be costly or big, just something which makes you smile. I have a small just me business looking for investment (nudge nudge lol)

Rainbowqueeen · 22/05/2021 23:26

There are so many people out there who would benefit from assistance. Which is sad And you can’t help them all so pick something you are passionate about
If I had lots of money I plan to give interest free mortgages to single mums so they can get into the housing market. Gives them an asset so a better retirement plus security and stability for their children growing up. And I’d get the principal that they paid back so could use that to help more women.

Enjoy the money too though, you deserve to reap the rewards

multivac · 22/05/2021 23:30

Please, OP, if you decide to take the philanthropic route, make sure you are guided by people who know what they are taking about. And that doesn't mean 'ethical financial advisers'. If you want to support education, talk to educators. If you want to help the struggle against domestic violence, talk to the people who work on the front line - or at the very least, make sure the people putting your money to work do so.

I have learnt a lot about the world of wealthy philanthropists over the past few years. And all too often, the money isn't put where it's needed; either due to ignorance or vanity.

It's hard work, making money work hard for good. But it's good work. Good luck.

I’m not educated in the financial planning side of things, but once that was taken care of, I’d be offering donations to charitable causes close to my heart. I’m currently receiving some counselling at a charity for survivors of sexual abuse and violence. It is changing my life in so many immeasurable ways. If I ever find myself in your position, it’s small charities like that who I would support. There are so many wonderful organisations helping people and animals, I’d imagine it would be easy to feel spoilt for choice.

Struckbylightning · 22/05/2021 23:43

There is a charity called Deki, it invites you to invest in small businesses in developing countries. Whatever amount you decide to give, it’s an investment not a donation. If the business makes money you get your investment back and can either keep the money or choose another small business to invest in. Have a look at their website.

Hire a cat and house sitter and do your cruise

Lavendersong · 22/05/2021 23:49

Ok then give your MD a huge fat bonus, if you haven't already.

Buy property which younger staff members can share and rent out at a reduced rate.

Buy larger properties to rent out to staff with families who work for you at a reduced rate.

Buy property for your adult children to rent out and more for them to live in so they have a permanent income and to leave to any grandchildren and then their children etc.

Just make life more pleasant for your family and staff, that's what I'd do.

Buy holiday homes in the UK and abroad that your staff can use and others for your family to use.

Dont just randomly waste it and give it away.

Midnightstar76 · 22/05/2021 23:53

Well my first thought was you lucky so and so and how I wish I had problems like that. In all honesty though good for you and I would get some proper financial advice via your bank? Clueless really but that’s what I would do,

OP "I hate my wealth tbh"

All jokes aside
Give it to people who will love it. It's insane that you have it and you hate it.

Exactly. I didn't want or expect this. I wish some adult, measured, objective person would do this fo me. Ima lite-weight liberal who is at sea

Nat6999 · 23/05/2021 00:20

Invest in properties to rent out & contact women's refuges to offer them first refusal to women who need to start again in their own home, offer to do basic furnishings for them. I would imagine any woman who was offered them to be so grateful that they would care for the property. As long as you don't intend to sell for at least 10 years you should get a good enough return on the property to be able to keep the rents low.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 23/05/2021 00:20

How about an educational charity? The pandemic really showed the inequalities some children have to face. You could provide laptops /tutors /additional equipment. Perhaps get in touch with the marvellous Marcus Rashford.. he'll show you how to help people. (I'd also hire a cat sitter so I could go on holiday) 😉

HollowTalk · 23/05/2021 00:48

It's a very bad idea to give money on here, OP. You have no idea who posters are.

Espirito · 23/05/2021 03:00

Contact your local/regional Community Foundation. They work with lots of people like you, as well as bigger businesses to distribute grants and large donations to charities you may not have heard of but are already doing exactly what you'd like to see. communityfoundationatlas.org/explore/

Pepsimirror · 23/05/2021 03:20

What sort of business are you in? Maybe you could help people in the same industry and invest in them.
