Hi @Pearlyy I can't answer your question but I'm interested if you have visited serum yet? I had my first consultation with them yesterday I was advised PRP and natural IVF, hoping to go in August for PRP and some tests

Meadow3 · 08/06/2024 19:57

I’m travelling to Serum next week for PRP and then potentially return end of July for first round of IVF. They come highly recommended from a couple of ladies I know who were successful with IVF. I have also checked their Trustpilot reviews and all bar one was positive. I will update you here next weekend as to how I got on.

Cloclo93 · 09/06/2024 15:41

@Meadow3 goodluck on your 1st trip! We're you advised to do lots of tests too? I'm finding all the tests add up the cost alot I'm just unsure if we need them all. I definitely want to get the ovarian prp but I found a clinic in poland which is half the price of serum for PRP, please update on how you get on!

Simim · 10/06/2024 00:07

Am thinking about going had a chat with Dr Mando this week. It’s our first round as I only met my partner recently and I just turned 44. The reviews seem to be amazing but am keen to hear more other experiences. Also I have a bit of a phobia of any procedures and ops and they are suggesting aqua scan, PRP and maybe hysteroscopy under general which are making me filled with anxiety. Any positive stories and of course real feedback positive or negative would be great. Thankyou and good luck for those already started!

Meadow3 · 10/06/2024 10:46

Yes they’ve advised a Microbiota test, an aqua scan (hysteroscopy if any abnormalities found) and intraovarian PRP and for my husband to undertake a 40 day antibiotic course (even though his sperm and DNA frag results were very good).
I was tempted to have a call with another clinic just to compare for costs but I think I’m best to just go this week and decide if I want to go back to them for the IVF treatment. I do like the fact that I have spoken to two women who highly recommended them and were successful and all the positive online reviews.
But yes it has turned out much more expensive that I had anticipated which at this stage just feels relentless in terms of all the costs mounting up. But at my age, I don’t have time to waste and I figure I will inevitably have many years to come to earn back the money.
Will keep you posted when I’ve completed this weeks treatment.

I’ve a similar story, met my husband ‘late in life’ ;-) but it is what it is and my approach is I don’t want to regret anything. I’ll throw the kitchen sink at the problem and hopefully something will work. I have been preparing my body for six months, no alcohol, good nutrition, acupuncture, supplements, no stress (left my job at Christmas, very drastic but the stress was killing me!).
I mentioned in the above comment, all the costs are mounting up but unfortunately there is a defined window and the money will be immaterial if I get pregnant 🙏

Thanks so much. Good luck this week sounds like they have proposed the same plan for you as for me. I am thinking about chatting to a clinic here too (and taking a few weeks just to mentally prepare myself) but will hopefully go over late July or August (although aware they do close for a few weeks. Am trying to have some CBT counselling to get me to deal with the phobia of the medical procedures too. Hope it all goes well, would love to hear about your experience am sure it will go great and could use the reassurance. Good luck xxx

So I got back from Serum earlier today. It was a full-on few days, I arrived Wednesday afternoon and was in the clinic Thursday and Friday, finishing early afternoon each day. The temperature was around 40°C which was really oppressive so I didn’t get to enjoy the heat (not a big deal but just bear in mind if travelling in the summer months).

I went for PRP but they didn’t tell me until I got there that I needed to have an ECG and a list of different blood tests complete before I could get PRP. This annoyed me as I could have easily got these done in Dublin before travelling saving me hassle in Athens but a bigger issue would have been if there was a positive result with the blood tests or an issue with the ECG, I couldn’t have actually got the PRP done. Thankfully all results were fine and I got the PRP treatment yesterday morning. But I would suggest getting the ECG and blood tests done in your home country before travelling to avoid any hassle or a wasted journey.

The blood tests were done at Serum however I had to go the Mitera hospital for the ECG which they pretty much left to me to organise in terms of getting an appointment and travelling there and back. The cardiologist they had initially recommended wasn’t available, so rather than start googling, I then asked the Serum receptionist to organise the ECG. Mitera is a busy public hospital with very few English speaking workers but I was there and back in a couple of hours so in the end it was relatively efficient.

All that aside, I would say my experience at Serum was positive. They told me that due to my age, their protocol was the gold standard solution (to eliminate any pathogens and try and improve quality of eggs with PRP) but of course there are no guarantees. I felt it was an honest discussion, I know the chances are small but in my mind it’s worth it to know I’ve done everything possible and to have given it my best shot.

Their clinic is state of the art which is reassuring as you don’t know what to expect when getting treatment abroad. I met with Dr Mando for my consultation and she did the aqua scan with a nurse and another gynaecologist present. The aquascan (a little uncomfortable but manageable) came back all clear so I didn’t need a hysteroscopy which was a relief as it costs an extra €1300.
The PRP is done at Serum and the nurses/gynaecologist were all very professional and nice. You’re knocked out for it so there was no discomfort during or after and I was prescribed antibiotics for a week to ensure no infection.

Cost wise PRP was €1800 (same price as Ireland), the aquascan €200, microbiata €300, the bloods €110, glucose test (to check if I needed to continue taking metformin) €80 and the ECG,€100. So up until this point it definitely isn’t a cheaper option than Ireland and I spent a few hundred more on prescriptions (one of which was a Serum produced supplement for my husband - he can’t take the antibiotics they initially prescribed so these are the alternative). I emailed my pharmacy in Dublin whilst I was there to check if they had some of the medication, what they didn’t have, I got in Athens. The IVF itself will be €3K which thankfully is cheaper than Dublin but with flights and accommodation, it probably works out the same as UK/Ireland costs.

However I really believe that from what I’ve heard/read from others’ experiences with Serum, their speciality is that they treat the most complex fertility cases (that would be diminished or side stepped in Ireland) and they have a high % of success. I spoke with Penny who is very nice and of course as clinic owner, she will only be positive in talking about her clinic however she mentioned a recent case where the client was 47, had never been pregnant and both her and her husband had a variety of issues to resolve before trying IVF, and after a a few months of intensive prep, her first cycle was a success.

I will go back towards the end of July for the first IVF cycle so I won’t know until then whether PRP has helped egg quality. Here’s hoping! If anyone is thinking of going and needs any advice around where to stay etc, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Simim · 16/06/2024 18:09

@Meadow3 thankyou so much for the detailed account. As I mentioned abouve I have a lot of fear and your info has honestly made me feel very reassured. I will hopefully go next month so will definitely keep you posted too! Wishing you loads of luck xx

Simim · 16/06/2024 18:26

@Meadow3 also where did you stay?

Meadow3 · 16/06/2024 19:44

Ah I’m glad it has helped reassure you a bit, you will be absolutely fine. I feel much more confident going back for the IVF now that I’ve been over. I know my update was a bit long winded but thought it’s better to know as much as possible ahead of making the journey.

I stayed in an apartment in Patisia that I found on Booking.com. It was newly renovated, very clean and located on a road with a bus that stopped about 5/10 mins walk from the clinic - bus journey took about 40 mins. When I go back I’ll stay somewhere closer to the clinic to make it handier. Public transport is really good in Athens (there’s also a Metro available) but I think when you spend a good chunk of the day in the clinic, it’d be nicer to get back to where you’re staying quickly. The Serum apartments are right beside the clinic and look lovely so if they are available, they are a great option.

Thanks so much @Meadow3 for the detailed information! What blood tests did you needed before the PRP that you could of done in Dublin? Was the ECG a age related requirement? I can not remember if they told me about a ECG or did I see it's required for over 35 somewhere 🤔
We're you subscribed your ivf medication while out there or will they send you a prescription in a few weeks?
Did they did tell you to try naturally after the PRP before starting ivf again ?
I plan on flying out the end of August for prp and blood tests for any hidden infections etc

Simim · 18/06/2024 10:54

@Meadow3 I think I will take your advise about the ECG and bloods here if I can. At a minimum the ECG as it would save another hospital trip. Re the microbiota test what was that like? I dont really understand what is it although have scheduled a call with Dr Mando next week to discuss the plan for our first trip before I book anything but hoping to go in July. Thanks again xxxx

Meadow3 · 25/06/2024 11:23

Apologies for the slow reply, the details on the blood tests were at home and I have been away for a few days.
So the blood tests were the following:
HIV-1, HIV-2, hepatitis B-C and syphilis (results within the last 6 months)
The ECG result also needs to be done within the last 6 months and I don't know if it is age related so best check this with Serum directly.
Yes I was prescribed the IVF meds whilst there and no they didn't say whether to try naturally before starting IVF. I have mixed feelings about this myself, Dr Mando said if we're successful in terms of egg retrieval then they will bank embryos for future use if possible. So if I got pregnant naturally this obviously isn't possible and with my age and if I am lucky to get pregnant, this will likely be my only chance. Also the genetic testing of embryos is another plus with IVF. As much as I would love to think I could get pregnant naturally, thinking pragmatically it's best I proceed with IVF.

Meadow3 · 25/06/2024 11:29

The detail on the Serum website about the microbiota test is:
Infection Screening - IVFSERUM - Advanced IVF Treatment Center Greece
From memory I think they take a sample while you are getting the aquascan but maybe double check this with them. Given you will be there anyway, I think it's a good thing to get done as part of the overall protocol and they will likely strongly recommend it.

Thanks so much! Unfortunately due to a cyst my trip is currently on hold trying to get to the bottom of it first. Will keep you posted though. Best of luck xx

Simim · 10/07/2024 07:19

Hi all, just jumping onto this thread as I’m heading to Serum in September. How is everyone getting on there?
I have also been advised to get the microbiodata test and aqua scan
With the ECG and blood tests required before they start anything is it best to get them done here rather than over there?

thank you x

Clocloxx · 07/08/2024 23:14

Hi @Meadow3 any updates with your ivf cycle?

Hi @Gkb90 I'm heading over in October! I've chosen to get the bloods in serum and the ECG here in Ireland, best of luck on your ivf journey 😀

Gkb90 · 07/08/2024 23:28

@Clocloxx I’m booked in for September, super nervous!! I’m trying to find somewhere close by to me to get the ECG also, hoping I can get this sorted soon! Good luck on your journey too x

Simim · 08/08/2024 05:47

I went this month and went well. Felt very listened to etc but it was full on. I took @Meadow3 advise and got ecg and bloods here because I could. That's not to say you can't get them done there it was just one less thing to do. Heading back in Sept

Monkhouse2022 · 15/08/2024 10:58

@Meadow3 @Simim hello ladies. Im thinking of going here but wanted to get your updates on how things went for you. Good news I hope!

Simim · 15/08/2024 11:04

Good so far. Heading back in September hopefully all going well. But very positive experience so far.
