IVF at Guys and St Thomas' - Timelines?

Lils93 · 07/05/2024 15:53

Hi everyone,

My partner and I have been TTC for 19months now and have finally been referred to Guys and St Thomas' for a face to face consultation (we've had all our tests done, I have PCOS and partner has poor morphology).

The consultation is in July, does anyone have any idea how long we might be waiting before actually starting treatment? NHS funded, so there's little info online.

Appreciate this will differ for everyone but any kind of indication would be helpful.

Thanks in advance! xx

Is this the first consultation with them before applying for funding, or you have funding approved already and this is your consultation afterward?

Once my funding was approved (end of October 2023) I was offered to start from my December bleed - so it was very quick.

@LouP87 thanks for your reply!

This will be our first consultation, I probably should have said we’re going down the NHS route, we’ve not had the funding approved yet x

Ah ok, in that case we had our first consultation at end of September and funding was approved by end of October (we were advised 6 weeks for approval but it was quicker)!

@LouP87 Great, thank you for that! Fingers crossed it goes as smoothly for us!

Wait time for approval about 3 weeks then 2 week wait for doctor’s appointment then another 6 weeks for training session and drugs then starting next cycle.

I know this thread is almost a year old but hubby & I had our first consultation 3 weeks ago. We were told that the next step would be for our funding to be approved but we still haven’t heard anything. I feel like I’m being impatient but also feel like it’s taking long. After finding is approved do they do blood tests? Another analysis? What are the next steps ?

Happyclappy22 · 02/04/2025 11:38

*funding

Lils93 · 02/04/2025 14:44

@Happyclappy22 Hi there, our funding was approved within about 6 weeks. We then came back into the clinic for another consultation and both of us had bloods taken. Quite soon after this we had the consent forms to complete xx

Oh wow! Thank you so much for your response! If you don’t mind me asking how is it going?

OneWaryCat · 02/04/2025 16:52

I was at Kings and funding approval was literally overnight! It all moved much quicker than I thought it would.

good luck! X

Happyclappy22 · 02/04/2025 22:08

Oh wow! When was it, and how did it go/going?

Lils93 · 03/04/2025 10:00

@Happyclappy22 I'm 19 weeks pregnant now, complete fluke as it happened naturally right before our first IVF round was due to start. Incredibly lucky, I know. Wishing you all the best xx

Congratulations!! Praying all continues to go well. How long were you trying before IVF? Did you have the blood work etc beforehand or any drugs. Sorry I’m asking so many questions I know nothing about the terminology and process as it’s so different for all.0

@Happyclappy22 Thank you so much! We were trying for 2 years before the IVF process started. I had several blood tests before the medication was delivered but no drugs. No worries at all, ask away! xx

Hi same, this thread is nearly a year old, but just thought I would check-in because I am very confused with our timeline with Guys .

March - group appt

April - virtual appt and we signed all the forms, we got told that our genetic condition was funded, but not sure if the funding was applied for then or not.

July - in person appt and bloods were taken, this was like 3 weeks ago.

Not quite sure what our next step is? I did get a call that said they were waiting on the Dr. to confirm when the next appointment was but they did not say what that would be.

Maybel28 · 23/09/2025 11:11

Hi everyone,
First time messaging on here. After some advice after our appointment yesterday. We have been trying to conceive for over 2 years, our first appointment was in July last year, we have had bloods, semen analysis, I've had scans etc, my partner has had varicocele procedure in June this year. Our finding was accepted in April and we were told once procedure had been done we would have our first nurse consultation appointment and semen analysis after 3 months. We had our appointment yesterday expecting to see a nurse as this is what we were told and it has been 3 months since procedure. We didnt see a nurse we saw another different consultant (each appointment has been with different consultants). He said we were given wrong information and we have to wait another 3 months. We explained we were not happy about this as was expecting to be starting the process soon.. I'm just interested in other people's timelines as I don't get why we have been waiting so long now. Everything seems to be always be a 4-6 week wait which then turns into months and months. He also seemed very dismissive and was asking my partner questions about me when I was sat right there. We came away feeling so deflated and upset

Happyclappy22 · 23/09/2025 12:09

really sorry that you are going through this. The whole infertility process is already very personal and makes you feel vulnerable so it does not help when lack of empathy is shown.

We went to our first ever consultation March this year and completed our first IVF cycle this month. Are you with NHS?

Maybel28 · 23/09/2025 15:12

Yes we are with NHS.
Do you have male factor or female? Did you see the same consultants each time?

Amazing you had your cycle so quickly! Hope all went well? xx

Happyclappy22 · 23/09/2025 16:12

I think we have both. So we did ICSI too, everything for hubby except his morphology (according to last years analysis) they never checked his semen our result were from when we checked privately last year. I have endo and have done 2 laps. No, we saw a different doctor/ nurse everytime I’m not even sure who were the consultants as each appointment had a different person I.e. for the scans, explanation on how to use the injections.

yeah once you get started everything goes pretty quick and they give you a timeline.Sadly, found out yday the fresh transfer had failed. We had no other embryos frozen as only 2 fertilised. It wasn’t meant to be, tomorrow is supposed to be our OTD but I’ve just had a period.

SamVan · 23/09/2025 18:38

@Maybel you rarely see consultants during the NHS rounds. You can request a consultant but it might mean a longer wait for an appointment. Personally we found the way the NHS clinic was run very stressful as there was no continuity of care and we would frequently get told different things by different people.
