Hycosy / HSG success stories?

Hi all, I’m hoping to have my Hycosy this month and would love to hear success stories as I’ve heard it can give your fertility a ‘boost’ by clearing out your tubes. I’m 30, been ttc baby number 1 for a year now and never had a bfp. I’ve had baseline bloods and an ultrasound scan before and all good and all signs show I’m ovulating, and DH’s SA was also all normal. Am really hoping the procedure won’t be too unpleasant and that this will do the trick 🤞🤞🤞

Not too unpleasant, nurse chatted to me about reality tv as a distraction, found no blockages and got pregnant that month after about 15 months ttc! Did ovulation strips but nothing different to other months. Maybe supplements had started to have an effect?? Who knows.

would love to hear how anyone with a similar ish experience got on with baby number 2

hopingforapeainapod · 28/11/2023 08:52

Hi @Rosiebob thank you for replying and sharing your experience - really hoping I might have a similar one! Am going to take a break from BBT this month as I think it is just adding to general stress levels, not sure yet whether I will use OPKs or not. Best of luck with baby number 2!

Hi @hopingforapeainapod
I am in the exact situation
We have been ttc since September last year. Everything is fine in terms of hormones, ultrasound, thyroid levels etc. Sperm good.
I am now waiting for my period (should come in about 3 days) and then I have to contact the clinic to come somewhere in december to do sono hsg.
Hoping for a miracle as well as you.
Are you doing a sono or an xray hsg?
Good luck 🤞

hopingforapeainapod · 28/11/2023 15:02

Hi @dormicumema sorry to hear you are in the same position! I’m having a Hycosy rather than a HSG which I believe is basically the same except Hycosy uses ultrasound and HSG uses x-ray? I’m not 100% sure whether I will have it this month after all - I called on CD1 (on Friday) and they said I had to have a chlamydia test done first, and obv because of the weekend I could only have it done yesterday. They said the results would be back today but I just called and they said they might not be back til Thursday now, and annoyingly I can’t book the Hycosy until the result comes back (even though I’ve had the same partner for 12 years!) I think a Hycosy has to be done by CD12 ? So unless they can squeeze me in really last minute and pretty sharpish it looks like I might have to wait until January…

OP posts:
dormicumema · 28/11/2023 17:47

@hopingforapeainapod oh so sorry, fingers crossed you will get squeezed in! I did all cervical swabs (sorry not an English native so not sure if that is the term) before my first appointment with fertility specialist so I just have to wait for CD 1 to book it. Just thinking about it, who knows if I'm gonna manage it this month, because of the holidays maybe they will reschedule for January as well... We shall see.
I also wanted to ask you, did you maybe do any lifestyle changes while ttc?
I am only using prenatals (don't use it every day bc sometimes I forget) and I also had a habit of social smoking which I stopped 6 months ago.
I am in healthy BMI but I eat a lot of sweets and don't really work out (have quite an active job though) so was thinking to maybe try to be healthier as well... What about you?

hopingforapeainapod · 28/11/2023 18:43

@dormicumema that’s good! I didn’t realise I would need a chlamydia test and to show them my most recent smear test result so I wish I had sorted that out sooner!

I haven’t really made any major lifestyle changes except taking folic acid / vitamin supplements. I don’t smoke, I am a healthy weight, I don’t exercise loads but I walk the dog everyday and do yoga and I also have a fairly active job (I’m a teacher so I am on my feet a lot of the day) and I eat pretty healthily. The only thing I haven’t done is cut down on alcohol - I’m not a huge drinker (more little and often). I have thought about stopping drinking but I just can’t bear the thought of everyone asking me and/or assuming I’m pregnant! I think I’m going to do Dry January as it’s a nice easy excuse.

The only other lifestyle change I have made is acupuncture - I go twice a month. I started a few months ago as a friend recommended it and my periods were quite light and my skin was quite bad after coming off the pill (I thought I might have PCOS but this has been ruled out by doctors). I do find it very relaxing and I think it has helped to regulate my periods but hasn’t got me pregnant yet!

@dormicumema I have just booked it in for Tuesday (CD12) - bit nervous as I’m a bit of a baby when it comes to medical procedures but hoping this works 🤞🤞🤞

dormicumema · 30/11/2023 10:28

@hopingforapeainapod Fingers crossed! I just started my period so am trying to book as well. You will probably do it before me and will give me some advice :)) I also hope it will work

hopingforapeainapod · 05/12/2023 11:54

Hi @dormicumema - just to say I had my Hycosy procedure this morning. Was very nervous and anxious before but it was much better than I expected. It was definitely unpleasant, but nowhere near the horror story I had heard. I actually barely felt the speculum / catheter going in; there was some cramping with the balloon and the dye going through was like very intense period cramps back to back but as soon as I felt like it could be too intense it was over. The only thing I would say is I felt quite faint after it - I have naturally very low blood pressure but they said it’s quite common - so maybe have a chocolate bar or glass of orange juice ready to go afterwards!

Oh wow, this sounds good! Did they tell you the results?
It's time for BDing a lot!
I am having my done on Monday and this gave me so much confidence

hopingforapeainapod · 05/12/2023 13:04

@dormicumema yes got the results straight away - tubes all clear which is great! Best of luck for Monday, take some paracetamol beforehand and lots of deep breaths!

Hi

I have a success story! Well, partial success. I had a HSG in May after 18 months of trying without any success. We missed June's window as I was on holiday without my husband, but we fell pregnant in July.

Sadly I had to TFMR at 14 weeks.

I am hoping the anecdotal 'you're more pregnant after a loss' is true for me as well.

hopingforapeainapod · 05/12/2023 15:17

Hi @MrsScotland thank you for sharing, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, that must have been unbelievably hard, especially after trying for so long 🥺 wishing you the best of luck and hoping what you say is true! 🤞🤞🤞

OP posts:
dormicumema · 05/12/2023 17:08

@MrsScotland so sorry as well. But it is atleast clear you can get pregnant naturally and I truly hope for your rainbow baby and for @hopingforapeainapod and me to have success after hycosy. 2024 will be our year girls🤞 🍀

dormicumema · 11/12/2023 11:54

@hopingforapeainapod i just had a failed hsg appt. They said I was very tight because I am not due to ovulate until friday/Saturday so maybe that's the reason. They rescheduled it for Wednesday. Feeling very deflated.
The only good thing is she checked me and said uterus in avf, and my previous ob said it was rvf which is better i guess.

Jennifer89 · 11/12/2023 13:39

Hoping so fingers crossed, ttc now for 14 months, if I don't conceive early Jan I am due to have hycosy that month.. Praying I conceive naturally and don't need to go down path of ivf..

hopingforapeainapod · 11/12/2023 16:45

@dormicumema sorry to hear your HSG didn’t work, I’ve never heard of that before! Hoping it wasn’t too painful! That’s annoying but it’s good they managed to reschedule it so quickly. Also good that your uterus looks like it is in the right position!

@Jennifer89 best of luck for January! Hoping 2024 will be our year 🤞

@hopingforapeainapod thank you, hope 2024 is the year for you too 😊

dormicumema · 13/12/2023 15:43

Hi, So basically came today for 2nd try hycosy which went smoothly, but a little bit painful when putting the catheter in. The dye didn't hurt at all. They said everything looks nice and open 🙏. Also after the examination they immediately sent me to my fertility specialist who was there seeing patients and told me to try with letrozole 2x2.5mg cd3-7 for 2-3cycles due to my age under 30 so basically we have time. After that, if there is no success, he recommended ivf.
After sad Monday I'm feeling really good today!

hopingforapeainapod · 13/12/2023 16:34

Hi @dormicumema glad it all went well (sounds like you have a much higher pain threshold than I do!) and that it was all clear, and great that you could see your doctor straightaway! I think I’m going to ask for Letrozole in the new year (even though all signs suggest I am already ovulating) but apparently I need to make a consultation first to discuss so need to organise that first!

OP posts:
dormicumema · 13/12/2023 17:00

@hopingforapeainapod yeah I have pretty painful periods so I was preparing for way worse cramps and just laid there waiting for it but it didn't come 😂 I do have some tenderness/pressure in the right pelvic area and bum area Probably from the dye spilling, but no pain.
Yeah, I did read clomid and letrozole can be helpful for unexplained infertility. And I'm glad if nothing works we will skip iui because it just doesn't make sense when everything is open does it

hopingforapeainapod · 22/12/2023 09:41

Hi @dormicumema how are you getting on? AF unfortunately arrived for me yesterday, a bit earlier than usual (I normally have like a 31 day cycle but this one was 27) - feeling pretty sad as had got my hopes up that the HyCosy may have done the trick but think I may have messed up ovulation dates / when we DTD this month anyway. Have spoken to the doctor though and after this month I’m going to try Letrozole as well 🤞

OP posts:
dormicumema · 22/12/2023 10:07

@hopingforapeainapod so sorry for the witches arrival. At least you can drink for the holidays 😂
I think hycosy messed my cycle as well, I had very little cm this month and had a 3 day holiday in fertile window, came home, measured pretty low BBT and then a spike on Tuesday which means I may have ovulated on CD 19, but as I said very little cm which I don't think is good.
Great news about letrozole, it may be the key for pregnancy in the end, fingers crossed. What dose will you be taking? Do you plan on using lh strips just to 100% catch ovulation?

hopingforapeainapod · 22/12/2023 11:54

@dormicumema exactly! Trying to focus on the positives 🥂 my sister in law just announced her pregnancy though and my husband has lots of nieces and nephews so think Xmas will be very bittersweet for me this year 😔

I think it’s probably a good thing you ovulated late this month! I think I may have ovulated straight after the Hycosy, but we didn’t DTD until the evening of the day after (wasn’t feeling up to it after the procedure!) so I’m worried we may have missed the window of opportunity anyway. I’m not sure how reliable cm is, but I do wonder if the HyCosy disturbs things somewhat!

So they said they would put me on the lowest dose of Letrozole (2.5mg I think?) as all signs suggest I am already ovulating and they are worried about over-stimulation. They also said I would need to have scans from about day 10, and then a progesterone test for day 21, which is fine but obviously increases the costs quite significantly. They also said that if I produce more than one or two dominant follicles they will ‘cancel’ the cycle (which I think just means tell me not to have sex) in order to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancies. To be honest the doctor wasn’t hugely encouraging of me going on Letrozole - she said the jury is out in terms of studies whether Letrozole helps you if you are ovulating already - but she appreciated that I want to try something (anything!) before IVF. I will probably do LH strips as well. What have you been advised?

dormicumema · 22/12/2023 15:27

@hopingforapeainapod I feel the same about Christmas. Used to love it, but since our ttc journey it's just a reminder of us failing to expand our family even more.
They just said to start with 5mg which is a higher dose from CD 3 to 7 and to do a scan on CD 10 and we shall see what's going on. Nothing much besides that, if that fails ivf is our reality. I was really hoping we won't have to do it, but at the moment I'm just glad we are trying something and it makes me feel closer to our goal. I so hope this is our last Christmas without a child or at least we will be pregnant by next one. Urgh.
