Narrow cervical opening-any experiences?

Roo45 · 04/12/2020 15:01

Just had my first round of IVF ICSI which has unfortunately failed. At transfer I was found to have a narrow cervical opening and it took a while for the embryo to be transferred as they needed to try a few times. I was in considerable pain for 24 hours afterwards and assumed that was why.
The fertility team told me on the day that that wouldn't have been contributing to our fertility problems.
I just wondered if anyone else had anything similar and what worked/was suggested to them? I'm waiting to have a follow up with the consultant who I will ask too but just wondered about others experiences. X

Hi I have something similar but my vagina canal narrow rather than my cervix. I’ve also been told it wouldn’t interfere with ttc but that sometimes a uterine abnormality like that can mean you would be more likely to have a weak cervix in pregnancy. I intend to demand a cervical stitch if I ever get pregnant.

Also I am given embryo transfer under sedation same as egg collection so I would ask for that. I have had no pain from them as I’m sedated. I’ve requested it at new clinics too and they all oblige when I explain.

Hi there,

I had my first attempt at transfer cancelled, as they could not get embryo through my cervix. I was referred for a hysteroscopy and cervical dilation. The hysteroscopy included biopsy which was clear but surgeon had real difficulty dilating my cervix and I was given a diagnosis of cervical stenosis. I prepared for fet on first cycle immediately after procedures and thankfully had a positive result, resulting in the birth of our son. I also worried about issues during pregnancy with my cervix but nobody saw the need for me to have a cervical stitch. I did go into labour a bit early and unexpectedly at just under 38 weeks but thankfully all ended well. Hope this information is helpful to you. Try to reply when people post about cervix issues, as I found when posting abs searching at the the time that it seemed to be quite rare 🤷‍♀️

@windy2909 thank you so much, you're right I struggled to find much info! Congratulations on the birth of your son 😊 I'm so sorry if I could ask what you did to prepare after your procedures?X

@Roo45 - thank you so much. When I said I prepared for fet immediately after I just meant I went in all guns blazing, demanding they got an embryo into me as soon as humanly possible! My consultant made noises about waiting another cycle for me to recover from procedures but I’d read that after cervical dilation, there were no guarantees that cervix wouldn’t close again, so I pushed for immediate action. I’d also read the the hysteroscopy can rejuvenate your womb lining and work in your favour (the gynaecologist that carried out procedures also indicated this) so I didn’t want to wait. Will never know if hysteroscopy made a difference and it’s worthwhile noting that our circumstances don’t seem entirely the same but hope that sharing my experience may help you. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask x

Hi ladies

I've just joined and seen this post. Hope you don't mind me jumping in. I had my first consultation with Guys ACU yesterday and was told I had a narrow cervix and already knew in have a tilted womb. I asked if I could be sedated for transfer as have such a low pain threshold and was told no by the consultant, she asked if I ever had any issues with smear test being painful, I said a little so she replied well then you'll be fine, no need for sedation!

Just wanted to say thanks for this post as the consultant made me feel like I was being a drama queen! I'm going to push for it now after reading your experiences x

Roo45 · 11/12/2020 21:57

@Kit82 I'm definitely planning to ask about this at my follow up! Good luck xx

Ladies definitely push for it if you think it’s right for you. It was suggested by my consultant as the best route to take, therefore I had my transfer under sedation. I also had a mock transfer (not done as standard at my clinic) in the lead up to transfer with no difficulties. Best of luck to you both x

Kit82 · 11/12/2020 22:17

@Roo45 definitely ask, let me know how you get on. Best of luck for your next transfer xxx

I'm right at the start of the journey, was told yesterday I can't start treatment for another 6-8 months, was originally told 3-4 so I'm gutted. Still at least this post has prompted me to ask for sedation so I'm prepared! Smile

Kit82 · 11/12/2020 22:18

Thanks so much @windy2909 xxx

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/12/2020 22:19

My cervix was shut

2 cycles in U.K. and egg collection was horrific

Both failed

Went abroad. They did a mock transfer and found I was

‘Shut like a clam’

Happened twice

Twice had cervical dilation done

Then following month a fet

Kit82 · 11/12/2020 22:25

@Blondeshavemorefun how awful for you, must have been rather traumatic, I hope things get sorted for you

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/12/2020 22:37

Was awful. The pain during ec

My clinic didn’t do under general but 2nd tune gave me more drugs but still R.E.M. feeling I had been torn apart :(

Why they didn’t do a mock transfer to check is beyond me

But yes happy result

After 2nd cervical dilation and an era

Our 5th cycle and 7th embryo stuck and she is our miracle baby well toddler 3 almost 4 and . Eekkkkk starts school next year

I was almost 44 when gave birth

Roo45 · 11/12/2020 23:22

@Blondeshavemorefun so sorry for all you have gone through, I am glad you have your happy result after all of that.
@Kit82 best of luck in the journey, hoping to start my second cycle early next year but haven't had my follow up appointment yet
Thanks @windy2909 xx

Have they advised you to have a cd @Roo45

Roo45 · 12/12/2020 09:31

@Blondeshavemorefun by cd do you mean cervical dilation or something else?xx

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 12/12/2020 14:45

Sorry yes cervical dilation

Roo45 · 12/12/2020 15:55

That's ok @Blondeshavemorefun I'm still waiting for the consultant to book a follow up appointment (we only ended up with 2 poor quality embryos so they wanted to speak to the embryologist first) so I will see what they suggest x

Don’t put up with not being sedated ladies! We are going through enough. I have moved clinics twice and both times told them I need sedation for transfer. It wasn’t a request. No need to be in more pain than we need to be in. I did have to pay some extra for it but for me 100% worth it to have it a pleasant experience and no pain.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/12/2020 18:00

Shouldn’t need for transfer. That’s just like a smear

You shouldn’t be in pain

Egg collection is different

ForeverAintEnough · 13/12/2020 01:54

@Blondeshavemorefun maybe for you but for me I need sedation of embryo transfer as it’s a lot more painful than a smear which is already painful for me to do and my smears are done by the top consultant at my local hospital as it can’t be done at gp.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/12/2020 10:25

@ForeverAintEnough. Sorry to hear that. I’ve never known anyone to be sedated for et

Sorry it is so painful

Giftadama · 22/10/2021 07:50
