HSG

I had my HSG today, I remmeber reading somewhere that it's painful if the tubes are blocked? As the pressure builds because there is no where for the liquid to go?

Anyone had a painful HSG and given the all clear?

@ClaryFray I had hycosy and found it painful and my tubes were clear and everything fine so don't worry x

Pinktruffle · 26/04/2019 19:25

I had a HSG too and found it very painful, my tubes were clear.

Teddybear45 · 28/04/2019 14:46

It’s painful if your tubes are clear too. Especially if they decide to remove a few fibroids / cervical polyps while they’re checking. I took two ibuprofen and two paracetamol beforehand, and it was only just tolerable.

Cauliflower82 · 28/04/2019 15:34

I didn’t have a painful HSG (still horrendous but not painful) and I had all misshapen tubes. Not sure if this is helpful but offers an insight nonetheless. Mine were entirely clear though but still meant getting pregnant naturally would be a lot harder.

Rspu1384 · 28/04/2019 16:54

I have a hsg test this week, is it really as bad?
I’m assuming I have no blockages as I’ve been pregnant before and we have male factor infertility.
I’m shitting myself to be honest! lol

Kelly199 · 28/04/2019 22:18

@Rspu1384 don't worry about it, you won't be in there long. I think most people describe it as period cramps and just more uncomfortable than painful. They had to clamp my uterus, that was the worst bit for me, but they don't usually do that. Don't stress, just take some painkillers before the appt xx

Ginger951 · 29/04/2019 10:05

Mine wasn't fun but it wasn't the worst. When they inject the dye it's colder than your internal temp (mine was fresh out the fridge as I was the first of the day), the temp difference is what can often cause the cramping I was told. In the same way as we respond when someone puts something cold on you unexpectedly, your uterus reacts in the same way.
I would describe the pain as a very strong and sharp period pain. Lasted around 30 seconds. Mine came back all clear no blocks etc.
Don't worry about it to much, compared to IVF it's easy.

MrsDrambuie · 29/04/2019 10:13

HSG is over very quickly - try not to worry about it. I took paracetamol an hour beforehand. The procedure was uncomfortable (in the same way that a smear test can be uncomfortable) and I had mild period-pain-like cramp for an hour or so afterwards.

The HSG effectively flushed out my tubes and I got pregnant the same cycle, apparently there’s quite a bit of anecdotal evidence about this (in cases where nothing major is found to be wrong).

koality · 29/04/2019 10:16

A lot of people find it very painful even when all is normal (used to be part of my job to be involved in these)

desparate4sleep · 29/04/2019 10:21

I found it really painful on my right side. I got pregnant that same cycle about 5 days after the HSG. The nurses said that it is really common to get pregnant after it.

Rspu1384 · 29/04/2019 10:33

It’s great to read some of you ladies got pregnant!
I really don’t think it will help in mine and dh case as so far we know our infertility is only
The male factor. ( have been trying for several years)
I don’t find smears uncomfortable but I do tend to feel faint during them. I also don’t like the speculum but not painful st all. I’ll take ibuprofen and hope it’s not painful it’s got to be done!

Mine were clear but yeah painful. No I didn’t go back to work that day and my husband drove us home. Like bad period pains but was fine the following day

2childrenandout · 30/04/2019 21:24

Another one here who got pregnant 1sg cycle after having one. I don't remember any pain or discomfort during it.

Pinktruffle · 30/04/2019 21:34

I got pregnant a couple of months after thought it wasnt a successful pregnancy but that's by the by

MrsDrambuie · 30/04/2019 21:48

@WineOrGin I had my mum with me so she drove us there & back. As it turned out, I did feel well enough to drive afterwards. In your case I’d suggest having a coffee / snack straight after the procedure to take some time and make sure you feel ok (a nice treat too!) then drive home. Take afternoon off work or maybe do some work from home if that’s an option for you? As others say, you may get some cramping and spotting.

@WineOrGin hope your scan went well.
Yes, I've been diagnosed with pcos X

Rspu1384 · 01/05/2019 12:23

Hi just an update I’ve had mine done was just period pain and aching but not as bad as I thought. They said it went through my right but couldn’t see it spill out through my left so I’m left wondering if that one is blocked up anyone else had results similar?

Kelly199 · 01/05/2019 12:41

@Rspu1384 sorry didn't read previous comments! Glad it was better than expected!
Didn't they tell you if it was blocked? Or are you having the results from someone else? X

Rspu1384 · 01/05/2019 12:44

The lady who actually done the test showed me the scan and said the right has gone through but the left only went about half way then can’t be seen spilling out, she said she couldn’t say if it was blocked for definite or not. I have a follow up with my consultant in September and she will go through them
Properly. I just really don’t know what this means about the left tube though. Would rather have got a definitive answer there and then to be honest.

Kelly199 · 01/05/2019 13:12

@Rspu1384 I 100% know what you mean about wanting to know whether or not it's blocked there and then, rather than waiting until September!
Could you afford to have the follow up appt privately with your consultant? I did this and then asked to be referred back to the nhs. I saved a lot of waiting time by doing this and moved onto treatment much sooner too. It'll save you worrying until September. This was the reason I chose to, because it was such a long waiting list and I didn't even know what possible treatments would be as I didn't know what was wrong. I'm really glad I did.
Hope everything will be ok for you xx

Rspu1384 · 01/05/2019 13:54

I can’t afford it right now to be honest @kelly199 Thankyou for the advice though as didn’t know you could do that as we’re nhs. I’ve rang the hospital and they’ve said to ring back in a few weeks to see if any cancellations so hopefully be able to bring it forward. I’ve also read one tube can sometimes take a while to spill right out so just hoping this was the case with my left as the lady who done the test didn’t say it was blocked 🤷🏻‍♀️I’m just baffled to be honest. The only way I seem to get any answers is google lol x
