Barts Fertility Clinic

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of the fertility clinic at Barts hospital? Our GP referred us in Feb and we’ve just got an appointment through for mid May. I’m 32, husband 36, and we’ve been trying since January last year. Before the GP made the referral, I had 21 day bloods which were normal, and an ultrasound which revealed multifollicular ovaries.

I’ve become really nervous all of a sudden!

@LaurBC @Everythingcrossed89
Thanks for all the helpful tips - I will ask my doctor about what other hospitals are within my CCG but looking on their website they only mention Homerton.

You mention Homerton closing down - is that official or is is just a reduced service due to staff shortages?

Happy to keep in touch, it’s always so helpful to know it’s not just me going through this uncertainty!

Hoping you get your referrals and treatment dates soon :)

Everythingcrossed89 · 30/03/2022 19:34

Check Homerton fertility website - says they have had to suspend treatment and severe delays to treatment.

Wishing you all the best too xx

SadieBarts · 26/05/2022 11:33

Just jumping on this thread to say there are massive delays at Barts, if you can afford private, do it. I was originally referred Jan 2020. Finally had all tests in 2021. Spoke to Dr in Nov 2021 who confirmed I will need IVF and next appt will be to go through this. Move forward to Feb 2022 appt they needed my GP to confirm I had MMR as a child & repeat my ultrasound to determine dosage. This was all done that week. 2 weeks ago I get a call to say I need Rubella booster as an adult & another blood test before IVF - why the previous Dr didn't say this amazes me. Had this over a week ago and heard nothing back.

Barts are useless and the Dr's clearly haven't got a clue what they are doing. All this stress has had a negative impact on my cycle too, 1st month of no ovulation and now a missed period. Thanks Barts!

Rant over.

Everythingcrossed89 · 26/05/2022 13:23

Thank you for your message - I am so sorry you are going through this.
I had this with Homerton, and now have been moved to Barts and have initial appointment in June and I can't go through all this disappointment with delays again. I will see what they say at the appointment and take it from there, and if private is the only way we will have to make that work.

Thank you for the heads up, and I wish you all the best. X

Albylolo · 26/05/2022 13:51

@SadieBarts Im really sorry to hear that and thank you for sharing.
I am still in the process of trying to move from Homerton which is not going smoothly and I was going to ask to move to Bart’s, so it’s really helpful to hear from you.

I really hope it goes smoothly for you after this frustrating experience.

Everythingcrossed89 · 26/05/2022 14:42

@Albylolo I am sorry it's proving hard to move! From finding out about homerton in Feb, I got straight on my GP and badgered them hard to make a referral, and 4 months later got my first appointment at Barts. I just spoke to Barts to ask about the vaccine issue. They said as I am moving from Homerton, I should have had a virology, including Rubella (virus blood test) done, and she checked on the system and could see in my notes that I had. They need your partner to have had the same (if you have one). So I am now on Homerton to provide my partner's blood test results to Barts. It's so tiring having to be our own advocates all the time, but it's the only way to get there in the end hopefully.

SadieBarts · 26/05/2022 15:02

All the best to you all too. Such a heart breaking process x

SadieBarts · 26/05/2022 15:10

Sorry, could you confirm that they told your partner they need the rubella vaccine too or a blood test to show his immunity? They haven't said this about my partner (this being a male partner assuming yours is too?). I will honestly loose my sh*t if they say this.

The Dr I spoke to was that stupid, at the same time telling me I need the rubella booster as my blood test in April 2021 said I was no longer immune, they proceeded to say to have another blood test now to check for immunity again. I said to her to listen to what she is telling me, if I haven't had a booster since Apr 2021, which I haven't, how on earth would I suddenly have immunity. Guess what the reply was 'I don't know but have it anyway'.

Everythingcrossed89 · 26/05/2022 16:26

Sorry we need to have rubella immunity but partner doesn’t. They just need general virology tests

GingerBrummie · 28/05/2022 09:28

Hi all,
I went to St Barts, had 3 rounds on NHS, I found them excellent. First 2 rounds I had v poor eggs but they found the magic egg on the 3rd round & Im about to deliver!
Once you get the paperwork out the way & actually start the process, they are really good. Good luck x

Everythingcrossed89 · 28/05/2022 10:36

Thank you so much for sharing your positive story @GingerBrummie and congrats on your baby on the way!! I am entitled to 3 rounds too on the NHS, so amazing to hear that 3 rounds got you your dream. If I have any other questions about Barts when it comes to my treatment, would you mind if I DMd you?

Everythingcrossed89 · 28/06/2022 14:03

Hey just checking in with this thread to see where people are at with barts. We have had our initial appointment now, and have been told we just need to be invited to a nurses information evening, and then can get started soon after that.
How is it going your end @LaurBC ?

SadieBarts · 28/06/2022 15:23

All the best. I actually starter my stims last week, finally got there. Next week should be retrieval, if everything goes to plan. Everyone I have seen since have been really lovely. I'd personally make sure you get them to confirm details several times when you get to the medication stage. We were told incorrectly how long to take tablets for. Luckily didn't mess this cycle up.

Everythingcrossed89 · 28/06/2022 16:29

Oh that's great that you started your cycle! Wishing you all the best with it.
Are you on a long or short protocol? I don't know how long to expect to wait to hear from the nurses for the info session

Everythingcrossed89 · 06/07/2022 06:38

I’m just wondering what you all did to prepare for your first cycles lifestyle wise for you and your partner if you have one? We could get going September cycle so that only gives us a couple of months. We also are getting married next week and going on honeymoon so definitely will want to enjoy a few drinks!

Everythingcrossed89 · 21/07/2022 15:13

Hi all - I still haven’t heard from the nurses for our first appointment with them which should get the ball rolling. How is everyone else getting on?

Sharna2015 · 21/07/2022 19:27

Hiya, I’m a bit late to the thread, but we are in or was in the same boat as you what happens once you transfer to Bart’s after being given the go a head from hommerton ?

Everythingcrossed89 · 22/07/2022 08:59

For us it took 4 months to get our initial with Barts after transferring from Homerton. At the initial appointment with Barts, because we had had our investigations with Homerton they didn’t need to re do any scans etc but we did need an up to date virology bloods done for both of us. We were then told that we could start after the nurses get in touch for an initial information session. However, a month later we haven’t heard anything from the nurses, so i am currently trying to chase that with emails. Wishing you all the best with your transfer!

Sharna2015 · 26/07/2022 21:28

@Everythingcrossed89 thank you, this is so helpful. Nothing very clear with the transfer process. Hopefully hommerton will update there services soon.

wishing the best of luck

binkybb · 29/06/2023 15:09

good afternoon,

i am wondering if anyone can give some feedback on how there IVF journy was with st barts hospital, how long did it take from start to finish ? was it successful ?

my partner has a very low sperm count has anyone else had this issue ? we have done all the tests and now have our final meeting at st barts on 5th september to discuss what procedure we will be going doing etc

all comments welcome thanks x

KK251289 · 30/06/2023 00:48

@binkybb hope you're well. I was referred to Barts in November 2021 by Whipps Cross. I had a consultation in Jan 2022 and started injections etc in Feb 2022. I had my eggs collected in March 2022 but as I got OHSS I ended up in hospital so couldnt transfer until I had fully recovered. We transferred on 22nd July 2022 and got a BFP on 1st August. My little boy is 11 weeks old and such a dream come true. Barts were the best, so supportive, always there if I needed to check something or had a question. The staff treated me with so much compassion and I owe them everything. If you ever have any questions feel free to message me. Good Luck with everything x x

CoolSummer89 · 21/10/2024 15:36

Hi all, firing this thread up again in case anyone has experience in Barts fertility.

My husband was referred for sperm analysis directly because we have been unsuccessfully trying to conceive and he has a medical history that could affect his fertility, so we haven't had a joint appointment with Barts.

He was referred five months ago and finally had his appointment last week. Does anyone know roughly how long the wait is to get test results? I'm presuming they do the test on the day and then send to GP who referred him?

Sharna2015 · 21/10/2024 19:22

Should be a few weeks, they should also run some test on you too, I found Bart’s move fairly quickly

CoolSummer89 · 22/10/2024 19:31

@Sharna2015 Thank you.
I shouldn't have worried he got his results back in under 24 hours!
Everything was in the 'normal' range but all quite borderline. So not sure what next steps are as we are mid 30s and have been trying for a year. Have messaged my GP (we have different ones unhelpfully) to see what they recommend.

SadieBarts · 22/10/2024 21:10

@CoolSummer89 I'm under Barts. I haven't had great experience with them and find them pretty slow and unorganised. Plus all their records are paper based, nothing on computer, absolute joke.
