Total fertilisation failure

Hello,

My husband and I have just gone through our first IVF (with ICSI - we have male factor issues - bad count and morph, motility is ok). At my final scan I was only showing 8 follicles (was on 150 units gonal f) 6 were a good size but two were smaller ones. I thought this was on the low side but the FC said they were happy with how I responded and pleased with the amount of follicles. Had pregnyl 1000 trigger shot on Saturday and went for egg collection yesterday (Monday). They collected 7 eggs but only 6 were mature. Got a call yesterday eve to say that of the 6 they injected, 2 didn't respond very well, so was usually an indication that those two did not have the best chance of fertilising, but overall there is a generally a 70% rate of fertilisation. Got a call this morning to say that sadly NONE had fertilised. Sad They said this was very rare (I later googled it and apparently there is a 1 - 3% chance of it happening with ICSI) and said they could not tell why it happened (or rather, didn't happen) but could be down to either the sperm or eggs or drug regime I was on. I'm really gutted. This was our one and only NHS funded cycle. Sad

I've got a follow up appointment on Thursday morning, not sure if I'll find out anymore then. Was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if they had any success with further cycles?

I agree Nat that they should do EC 7 days a week.
Like Blue mine only do it Mon-Sat.
For my July 14 cycle, day 15 was a Sat and I had only 3 mature eggs with 2 smaller follicles.
I wanted EC on the Sat but the Dr thought with only 3 follicles I should wait until Monday for the 2 smaller ones to catch up.
By Monday, two that were mature on Sat were over mature and broke apart with ICSI, one was abnormal, one didn't fertilise, leaving one embryo that died just before day 5.
I still wonder if they had of listened and did EC on Sat/day 15, perhaps things would be different.
Yes, I would have only got 3 instead of 5, but I wouldn't have two overmature that break apart anyway.
And as I said previously, I knew that the first maturing contained the best quality - but these were left to over mature

So with my IVF cycle coming up, this is on my mind.
I am on day 25 and my period is anywhere between 24-28 days long.
I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival as it could come on the weekend, making EC in about two weeks and possibly the perfect day for EC could be on Sunday when the clinic is closed.
Makes it stressful and I agree that it should be Mon - Sun EC.

Nat, I am surprised you are still on here and happy to discuss IVF statistics. I think once I get my BFP I will be happy to see the end of this road!
Of course if Blue is not far behind in an IVF cycle, I will be lurking and hoping that her BFP follows.

Glad you feel better Blue.
I am like you that if I have a sense of what went wrong, it gives me hope that we can change the protocol for next time.
So are there any point in particular that you plan to put in place next time for a better outcome?

Interesting that the study I posted shows FSH at trigger increases fertilisation, while your two IVF cycles show the opposite!
