www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/7879061/Indian-mum-tries-to-flush-newborn-down- plane-toilet.html

A woman gave birth in a plane toilet and tried to dispose of the baby in the toilet. The baby is currently in critical condition and the mother has been arrested.

Yes! I was leaking from about 5 months pregnant both times, there was plenty coming out If I squeezed when pg a clear or even milky fluid came out.

So yes I have no doubt that babies probably get a little something when they latch on after birth. Not always - some babies are too sleepy or dont get the hang of it straight away - but mine both went for it and I'd be pretty confident that they got something

This sounds completly made up to me

how do you get on a plane this pregnant

how do you give birth without anyone noticing... even if its really quick.. sureley the baby cried for a start

How did the umbilical cord get cut.. you arent allowed anything sharp on board

ISNTitFUNtoBEinDISGUISE · 10/07/2010 10:17

That excited "yes" was to cote asking if anything came out straight after birth BTW

toccatanfudge · 10/07/2010 10:22

fraser - we don't know how pregnant she was, even if she was fairly late on perhaps either a) the airline are somewhat lax on their rules b) she wasn't really "showing" as pregnant".

Some people do labour silently/quietly/quickly.

If she delivered the placenta surely she wouldn't have had to cut the umbilical cord?

I can't find any more updates on the story - so I guess we'll probably never know

Pavlov · 10/07/2010 10:23

sensationalism, wild and likely inaccurate speculation. Where exactly would they get this information?

I am amazed how many people presume that this story in its entirety is true.

Anything in the media is a half truth at best imo.

I know what colostrum is, people

I'm just saying that I wouldn't expect a baby a few hours old to be feeding on it.

My two were nodding off after a few sucks, and that was when they were awake, in the first day or so. I didn't see them properly swallow anything until the second day.

frasersmummy · 10/07/2010 10:49

I found this from a year ago

same thing different airline

So either this happens a lot more than we think or this is just a re-hashed urban myth

you decide!

CoteDAzur · 10/07/2010 13:39

I vote "urban myth".

Anyone who has seen airplane toilets would know that you can't stick a baby in them. There is a "flap" that covers the siphon, presumably so that air pressure upon flushing does not suck big objects such as babies down.

whomovedmychocolate · 10/07/2010 13:47

I vote 'complete bollocks' myself. Even large turds get stuck in the loo on the plane.

DaisySteiner · 10/07/2010 14:02

Yes, babies a few hours old can actually feed on colostrum. They won't get huge quantities - probably around 5ml, but that's all they need at this stage. Lots of babies do nod off after a few sucks in the first day or so, but ideally you want them to be actively feeding at the breast for at least 10 minutes. Some babies hardly stop even in the first day!

Having said that, I don't know how they would know whether this particular baby had fed or not - it's very difficult to tell unless you have somebody who knows what they're doing actually observing a feed and/or you're checking blood sugars.

There are quite a few sources on this:

www.punjabnewsline.com/content/unmarried-punjab-woman-delivers-baby-aircraft-tried-flee

Seems a bit implausible....
