I agree with the sentiments in the article, BF should be seen as normal however how you get that message across is tricky.

I agree however I don't agree it's easy and convenient, for many women that definitely isn't the case.

I also think the links with protecting against obesity are way over played as lifestyle and healthy eating are far more important than breast feeding.

Interestingly they the BBC has an article on the same page saying this

www.news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4785960.stm

MilaMae · 22/06/2010 11:13

Sorry not good at links but it's on there, article entitled Breastmilk 'won't halt obesity'

AnnaBafana · 22/06/2010 11:17

Well, it clearly isn't working that well in this country. Most people know that breast is best. Definitely time for a rethink.

maktaitai · 22/06/2010 11:21

I saw a very good speech from a Hot Milk debate in Australia (linked to on here but it was yonks ago, prob still on YouTube) on this theme. Twas excellent but the logic of 'breastfeeding is normal/good enough/usual' as described in the speech required also saying 'ff is less than good enough' which was going to ruffle a lot more feathers.

Longtalljosie · 22/06/2010 11:30

I see what they're saying but I think they're splitting hairs. It's a perfect advertising slogan - simple, alliterative, and already embedded in the national consciousness. They should be making the most of it.

MilaMae · 22/06/2010 12:50

What a silly thing to say "ff is less than good enough". It is plenty good enough just not the best.

maktaitai · 22/06/2010 13:07

I'm not expressing it well Mila, the speech was much better. The thrust of it, if I can try again, was that the slogan 'breast is best' implied that breastmilk was aspirational, out of the ordinary, special (in the way designer clothes are) and that this was the wrong message as few people can afford designer clothes or consider them right for every day - 'breast is ordinary' was a better way of putting it. She then went on to say, if that's the case, then maybe we should say a bit more about ff being not usual, not ordinary, not everyday. Something like that.

OK I'll stop trying to paraphrase it found it

StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2010 13:11

yes breast is best is setting ff as the norm and saying bf is the gold standard

Morloth · 22/06/2010 13:17

"Breast is normal, FF is adequate" is quite a bit longer though.

There must be some ad/marketing person on here who can get Brest is Normal across in a catchy way!

AMumInScotland · 22/06/2010 13:18

How about "It's what they're for!" if we want a new slogan?

TigerFeet · 22/06/2010 13:19

I agree that the emphasis should be on normalising breastfeeding rather than setting it up on a pedestal as something that only the chosen few can/would do.

It ought to be made more clear that ff is a perfectly adequate back up to breastfeeding but that breastfeeding should be the natural first choice for everyone.

Not really sure how to encapsulate that in a snappy one liner though.

StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2010 13:21

I like
your milk for your child

booyhoo · 22/06/2010 13:24

tigerfeet i agrre with what you say- bf needs to be shown as the first choice for mothers with ff to back it up.

TigerFeet · 22/06/2010 13:38

oh I like that Stealth, may I steal it? We are relaunching our bf support group this week, that would look fab on our posters

StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2010 13:39

you certainly can for me but I doubt i made it up - I'm not that creative

Morloth · 22/06/2010 14:55

I think that a massive pair of gorgeous norks feeding a baby with the slogan 'That's what they're for'. Would be excellent but... It will probably upset a lot of sensibilities.

I like 'Your child. Your milk' though. Simple

StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2010 15:27

part of the reason i like that is that it implies bf is not only for newborns

TimeForANewWan · 22/06/2010 15:30

Oh - and why in this time of austerity isn't there more emphasis on the financial and environmetal savings of breastfeeding?

Yes SPB and it also emphases the milk/feeding aspect rather than the boobies

Sassybeast · 22/06/2010 16:21

You couldn't possibly have gorgeous norks on a BF poster - I mean, imagine how many people you would OFFEND ? Now pass me that copy of Nuts...
