England flag over No10 during the world cup??

What do people think of this: England Flag

10 Downing Street is the Prime Ministerial residence for the UK, not England.

Should everyone be shouting "Come on England" and if so, why? If not, why not?

none of the other countries qualified
am sure if they did those flags would go up

don't see the big deal, but am a but at football anyways

MoistvonLipwig · 09/06/2010 18:45

Has this been done before? I can't remember (the flag thing I mean?).

I don't know that it should be done but I'm about football too. Then again DC is a very English man isn't he?

weegiemum · 09/06/2010 18:47

That's what strikes me - DC is so very very English.

I think it will, as SGM said, alienate the non-English part of the UK. But, to DC etc, I don't actually think that we matter very much (we certainly didn't vote for them )

Chavs.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 09/06/2010 18:49

If Scotland, Wales or NI had qualified then I could see the problem and would think they were mad to do it, but seeing as England are the only home team through, why not?

I'm sure it's only because of us bidding for the World Cup in 2018.

weegiemum · 09/06/2010 18:51

Why is England a "home team"? 'Tis not my home, and when I lived there as a child many people made my life a misery (was badly bullied at primary school for my Scottish accent - including by a teacher!).

I fail to see why I should shout "come on England" when it is not my team.

My ds (8) is supporting Argentina. One of my English friends is unfeasibly angry about this as they are, apparantly "the enemy". ???

If all the UK countries had qualified, would their flags be flying over downing street?
If Scotland, or Wales or N. Ireland had qualified and England hadn't would their flags be flying?

But then I don't like football much but have given into demands from the DSes and have a south africa flag flying

weegiemum · 09/06/2010 18:52

Saltire - you certainly have the name for it !!

I very much doubt if scotland or wales or NI had got through that they woudl fly their flags during their matches.
But tbh I can't be arsed to care

'That's what strikes me - DC is so very very English.'

Makes a nice change from the former team of dour Scots who lived in Downing Street, and who alienated the English, one could argue.

cath476 · 09/06/2010 20:44

Oh what's the big deal? If England weren't through but Scotland or Wales for example were I would be rooting for them. Why not fly the flag for one of your teams that have made it through to one of the world's biggest sporting events - we don't celebrate success enough IMHO!

Gigantaur · 09/06/2010 20:54

the team that got through was England, not Great Britain or United Kingdom.

Why should the English Prime minister not hang the flag?

Why should he not put a stop to the pathetic over reaction and political over correctness?

MoistvonLipwig · 09/06/2010 20:57

Because he's the British Prime Minister, not the English one!! I think that's the point.

Dour Scots they were. Flying Saltires they were not!

Strix · 09/06/2010 21:09

But the flag is flying to support the team. And there is no UK football team.

(not that I give a toss about football)

longfingernails · 09/06/2010 21:16

This is a stupid idea.

Is he going to do the same thing any time there is a world cup or world championship with a British team in rugby? Cricket? Chess? Curling? Tiddlywinks??

Chil1234 · 10/06/2010 07:02

He's just going along with the same spirit that has St George flags fluttering out of every car window at the moment. I'm sure if Wales had qualified rather than England there would be a dragon flag flying over No. 10. As it was I thought it was very funny when Cameron challenged the other parts of the UK to wish England well at PMQs. The idea that this act 'alienates' somewhere like Scotland ... Alex Salmond would rather chew off his own foot than ever wish England well at anything!

JackBauerIsGoneForever · 10/06/2010 07:09

If they ever fly a welsh flag over downing street I will run naked through Piccadilly Circus.

DrNortherner · 10/06/2010 07:23

Stoopid idea from a stoopid man. What a Nob head.

Fruitysunshine · 10/06/2010 07:26

I think it is a great idea! There is too much diluting of the UK's culture and identity over recent years and what more fun/support could you ask for than to have the English flag flown over number 10?

I am Scottish by the way and wish the English team all the best in their bid to win the cup!

Chil1234 · 10/06/2010 07:43

There's a precedent actually... Downing Street Flags (picture) as Gordon B flew it for St George's Day. The observant will note that there is a Union Flag flying at the same time.

PigletJohn · 10/06/2010 08:07

In England it is quite common on public buildings to fly both the Union Flag and St George's flag (e.g. on St. Georges's day) but with the Union Flag taking precedence.

In some other parts of the UK the Union Flag is flown less often.

I have noticed that causual racism is quite common in parts of the UK when it is anti-English. That said, there is sometimes a tendency among more ignorant people to think that the Union Flag and St George's flag mean the same thing.

helyg · 10/06/2010 08:15

When I first heard this I was a bit (I am Welsh), but then he is English, and living in England, and England is the only UK team which has got through.

Will he have the little flags on his car too? Perhaps some St George's cross sunshades for the windows of his car? Some wheelie bin stickers...?
