I just read this on the 'Latest News' on BBC News but when I clicked on the headline there was no info.

I am shocked and hoping they are not seriously hurt.

Ryoko are you having a go at me for inaccuracy? What a bloody cheek. I was clearly being sarcastic.

"haven't you heard of pet-passporting?"

I'm sure its not 100% just like our border controls don't catch 100% of illegal migranting humans.

SirCharles · 07/06/2010 15:26

I agree it does sound v odd but foxes are vermin and attack for the fun of it not just because they are hungry or bored. anyone who has kept chickens can tell you the devestation a fox in a chicken house can cause and they don't always even take a chicken away so they did not do it to beat their hunger but for some other reason.

Fox = beautiful creatures but they can be evil.

bring back fox hunting - although not sure the residents of East London would be happy if 30 horsemen and women and a pack of dogs came pounding up the high street!!!!

I hope those poor children make a full recovery.

tethersend · 07/06/2010 15:28

I don't think those who enter Britain clinging on to the chassis of a lorry think to bring Rover with them, TBH.

"Foxes, rats and pigeons = wild life and they have just as much right to be here as we do."

When wildlife starts to impact negatively on the ability of people to live safely then the animals have to be controlled. Whether it's cockroaches, rats, squirrels, feral cats or anything else..... if it's living in the wrong place or in excessive numbers then it's a pest .

If you'd happily share your home with cockraches, fleas and a few rats then I'd belive what you're saying. Otherwise, I suspect you're just another misguided animal-loving romantic.

Ryoko · 07/06/2010 15:37

Humans are vermin too but I don't call humans that every time I talk about em.

I seriously detest the word vermin and how much people use it and call for the death of wild animals in there natural habitat simply because they don't like them being around and doing what they do.

If the whole population of this country swapped places with the population of Africa I'm sure the lion, rhino, hippo and many others would be exterminated pretty quick on the basis that they are vermin, but then we did a pretty good job of wiping out tonnes of em back in the day when we used to go on Safari.

bodenbore · 07/06/2010 15:41

A fox followed me into my house once - when I realised I tried to scare it - it did not move, it walked around like it owned the place.

It was really scary - I ran upstairs and locked myself in a room until it finally left.

slightlystressed · 07/06/2010 15:44

Sly, Evil, Cunning - these are ANIMALS people, please stop applying human charactaristics to them. Its just weird.

manfrom · 07/06/2010 15:44

"Humans are vermin too"

So presumably you're prepared to do a bit of pest-control - on yourself?

I've had pet rats, I've also had a family of wild ones living under the house and coming out a hole at night round the front door, I've had mice in the house and ant infestations, spiders obviously some of which I name for no apparent reason, I prefer to have them then trust what the poison would do to my health and what right have I to kill them.

the world does not belong to you, Rats and the like do well in London because people are filthy gits, if you don't want them breeding don't drop litter, put black bags in bins etc, until people start being clean the animals will continue to be here cleaning up our mess so we don't step in it.

I like all london wild life, we should be thankful for any wild life and enjoy it, rats are cute and pigeons make lovely cooing sounds.

wannaBe · 07/06/2010 15:52

I do think the point about re-classifying animals as vermin once they get out of hand is a valid one tbh.

A lot of the animals we classify as vermin all over the world are where they are because they have been encouraged by humans to be there. Grey squirrels for instance were brought over here and introduced, so it's nobody's fault but our own that they ended up getting out of control.

Similarly pigeons - it wasn't so long ago that you could buy cups of food to feed them in trafalgar square, and I'm sure people have done the same up and down the country, ditto with gulls.

We as humans do need to start taking some responsibility when we try to bring wild animals closer to us and it then gets out of hand.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 07/06/2010 16:03

Urban foxes, pigeons and rats are not vermin, they are wild animals that have become parasites. They spend so much tjme eating human detritus, they lose the ability to fend for themselves. It's why urban foxes are so mangy! 10 to 1 the fox that hurt these babies had spent it's entire life living out of bins and being fed by 'animal lovers' so that it had no fear of humans. Unfortunately these parasitic animals are a sad byproduct of human society.

Ryoko · 07/06/2010 16:08

We also need to understand the nature of wild animals.

we killed all the large dangerous creatures in this country 100's of years ago (bears and wolves).

I've complained here many times before about dogs and wanting them banned in cities they are pack animals that cause problems because people treat them like human kids instead of the pack animals that they are.

if I was in a country with wolves and I left my back door open and a wolf entered and attacked someone I would blame myself for leaving the door open, not the wolf for doing what a wolf does.

Ryoko · 07/06/2010 16:18

Well there is nothing that can be done about that, short of them becoming extinct there simply isn't a natural environment they can go back to, this country is all cities and farmland, most woodland consists of a small boundary between farms, I commend them for adapting to a harsh environment tho.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/06/2010 16:21

Sorry, but am laughing at the poster up thread who said 'I am going to ask my friend in Stoke Newington if she has any more info' re the fox case.

Ryoko · 07/06/2010 16:38

Why would someone in South London leave a door open anyway?

I wouldn't leave a door open thats asking for some form of local wild life to come in anyway and I don't mean the small fluffy kind.

NorkyButNice · 07/06/2010 16:46

Err because it was stiflingly hot here on Sat night and would have been ever worse at the top of a 3 storey townhouse.

We had all our doors and windows open till we went to bed that night.

Drivermamsstorytrain · 07/06/2010 16:47

We have a fox at the bottom of our garden that i have caught no fewer than 4 times asleep on my spare bed( cue manic cleaning of entire house as terrified the thing has fleas and god knows what other filth) i chase it out with a mop. It is not timid. And when startled it is not friendly. I imagine it jumped into the cot and was alarmed that the babies moved and attacked. Its terrible and i hope those babies make a full recovery. But please don't be under the impression that a fox would not enter a house unperturbed by its inhabitants. They do.

vinauchocolat · 07/06/2010 16:52

Erm, Ryoko, it has been so hot in South London, especially on Saturday. I have had all the doors and windows open. And even then the temp inside my baby's room was 29-30C consistently. They were being good parents trying to keep their babies at a safe temperature.
I hope they'll recover quickly.

tethersend · 07/06/2010 16:58

"if I was in a country with wolves and I left my back door open and a wolf entered and attacked someone I would blame myself for leaving the door open, not the wolf for doing what a wolf does."

Ryoko, this implies that people are 'blaming' the fox for this attack, which would be ludicrous- nobody is blaming the fox.

This doesn't mean that the parents are to blame.

I'm baffled as to why there needs to be anybody to blame...

bibbitybobbityhat · 07/06/2010 17:09

Its alright Gerrorf, I'm not going to ask my friend in Stoke Newington as its become major national news!

And, anyway, the poor family lives in Victoria Park. Not exactly on the doorstep of Stoke Newington. I expect my oracle knows no more than we do .

tethersend · 07/06/2010 17:11

I live next to Victoria Park, and I can report that we have no further information...
