I was just coming on here having read that headline to vent about it.

I am so angry on behalf of that poor baby

totally inexcusable!

bloody stupid woman!!!

BigFatSepticToe · 25/05/2010 17:14

several mothers at the school gate today were "showing off" their redness with their strappy tops, the guys out working in our road with shirts off

mama2moo · 25/05/2010 17:28

Makes me very sad and angry that a poor baby was left in the sun to get burns that bad

I wonder what will happen to the mum? Surely she isnt fit to look after her child??

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 25/05/2010 20:36

On the news they said 40% burns.

dustycups · 25/05/2010 20:44

scares me to think at which point would she have done something had they not intervend

would she just of gone home and put some after sun on and moaned that he was screaming all night!!

LynetteScavo · 25/05/2010 20:46

I cannot imagine any excuse for this, apart from negligence and ignorance. How could any grown woman with a child be so stupid?

And I was feeling guilty because DS2's neck is slightly brown.

Sidge · 25/05/2010 21:15

That's just awful. We were talking about it at work today as we've seen quite a few people with bad sunburn but luckily no children.

People also don't seem to realise that babies and small children can burn under parasols and awnings - the sunlight can bounce off concrete, water, sand, pavements etc.

missorinoco · 25/05/2010 21:21

Terrible story, but do you not think the mother has suffered by seeing what happened to her baby? There is a woeful lack of education regarding education for sun protection in this country. She probably didn't realsie how fast her litle baby would burn.

MiladyDeWinterOfDiscontent · 25/05/2010 21:26

I was at A&E on Sunday afternoon and the BBQ fuckwits were out in force with injuries sustained from daft activities following their fifth beer of the morning.

Then came the horrifically-burned toddlers and babies with sunstroke. It was very upsetting seeing them but thank god the triage system kicked in as it should and they were prioritised over neck-tattooed Darren who had been goading his mate's pitbull for example.

Poor, poor child

the mother is 29. so not a child, she must have seen all the ads about suncream.
silly woman

skidoodly · 25/05/2010 22:15

yeah poor mother, seeing the agony she inflicted on her child by being a shit mother

thisisyesterday · 25/05/2010 22:19

Maamruby... at least you were trying to protect your child when she got burned!

i just can 't imagine why anyone with half a brain would leave a small baby lying in the sunshine on a beach with NO sun protection. it just is horrific

and yes, i am sure the mother has "suffered" but not as much as her baby has.
there was a story in the news a while back about a woman with terminal cancer, caused by being burned badly ONCE as a child

I am sorry, but if this doesn't constitute neglect of some description then I'm sure as hell not sure what does

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 25/05/2010 22:20

its madness and just thankful the PCSOs did something, quite easily could have been worse. My kids have never been burnt even though they are slightly olived skinned and might fair better in the sun (like DH) they still had factor 30 over the weekend and hats. I plaster myslef in it but was shocked today at work to see grown woman burnt!!

MollieO · 25/05/2010 22:30

Baby hopefully will recover but will probably get skin cancer when older. Db got skin cancer in his 30s. He never ever sunbathed and would stay out of the sun. His consultant said that most skin cancer is caused by exposure to the sun when under 2 years of age.

SlartyBartFast · 25/05/2010 22:30

yes but you wouldnt let a 5 month old baby intentionally be in the sun, particularly your first child, surely? particularly not in 2010.

Sherbert37 · 25/05/2010 22:30

Poor baby . Surely most people nowadays know about sunscreen? When I was growing up we didn't use it at all and each summer I burnt so badly my skin peeled off. Would be neglect today but don't think people used sunscreen so much then (30 odd years ago). My dcs are teenagers and have never been burnt.

SlartyBartFast · 25/05/2010 22:31

thank god for the pcsos.

noeyedear · 25/05/2010 22:33

The baby was in the sun for up to 5 hours appaently, so it's not an excuse to say she probably didn't realise how quickly the baby would burn. He was out there for ages, probably partly in midday, going by the severity of burns and the length of time he was out there. She was just stupid and neglectful. No sympathy or understanding for her.

MollieO · 25/05/2010 22:34

On the news it said they estimated the baby had been left in the sun for 5 hours. Have to say I find it very very hard to believe that the mother didn't realise what she had done. Apparently the baby's skin had started to blister .

toccatanfudge · 25/05/2010 22:39

lisa - I'm burnt on the top of my arms but that was my own stupid fault for putting cream on my DS's and not doing myself as I'd forgotten to take our suncream with us so had borrowed a friends and I didn't want to use all her DC's suncream up on me as her bottle was nearly finished.

I'm wondering whether teh PCSOs were just wandering by or were tipped off by a concerned memebr of the public?

at what stage would one feel you had to DO something other than just tut if you saw something like this?

they probably saved the babys life

if the child was hot and miserable that was a warning to the mother, if it had stopped being miserable, that should have been severe alarm bells ringing

how COULD she not be aware, the child MUST have been in pain and probably dehydrated too
