Now I know it is the Mirror, but apparently the security bill for this whim is going to cost £1m

Rather goes against her hubby's policies on spending cuts!

I do have some sympathy. I am being forced to move at 23 weeks pg and it is very unsettling. I'd also really like a home birth and was panicking about have to give birth amongst packing boxes! What if she wanted a home birth? Imagine doing it at no.11, when everyone is working downstairs below!

But the extra cost of £1m is a bit much, this is DC's choice, he must have known what goes with it.

teaandcakeplease · 23/05/2010 10:31

Having been looking about on the web; The Telegraph (admittedly a Tory paper) says the delay is actually to do with not disrupting the children's education, not anything else. That article was at 8am yesterday. They always planned to move in so the PM could spend as much time with his family as possible, I gather. Whereas Osborne will be in the 1 bed flat above No.10 on his own whilst his family remain in Notting Hill. I think a lot of the tabloid papers are speculating and there's little substance to a lot of what they say...

But I do dislike tabloid papers and think a lot of what they write is fiction

Who knows?

teaandcakeplease · 23/05/2010 10:31

Oh yes and also a lot of Gordon Brown's stuff is still in number 11 apparently!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 23/05/2010 10:40

She happens to be married to the PM who, like it or not, is top priority security wise. Am sure getting the kids to and from school can be arranged, like they managed with the Blair children and the Brown children.

teaandcakeplease · 23/05/2010 11:13

I think from memory even the Blair's didn't both move in immediately as Cherie had No.11 decorated and certain things first

I still think the tabloids are making a mountain out of a mole hill here, anyway the mirror article of yesterday totally contradicts others that have been released anyway, so I suppose I need to stop harping on anyway, as she IS moving in and long before the 4 months the mirror claimed which was obviously speculation...

Anyway my DCs have chicken pox and I need to try and cool them off with another bath of bicarbonate of soda - the lucky things Flamming hot weather for them, they must be itching like mad!

Missus84 · 23/05/2010 11:17

Fair enough that she doesn't want to move - but they choice has to be either move or pay the security costs yourself.

skidoodly · 23/05/2010 11:22

Not one penny from the public purse should go towards providing security for them if they want to stay where they are.

withorwithoutyou · 23/05/2010 12:44

Bumper I'm almost 100% certain I read that she had c-sections with all of her children and is planning anothe one. God knows where I read that though..

frakkit · 23/05/2010 13:10

I think waiting until the school year is over and some renovations are done isn't that unreasonable tbh. Moving takes time. Molehill -> mountain IMO.

BelleDameSansMerci · 23/05/2010 13:11

Couldn't she just move to Chequers? It's huge, isn't it? And David C could easily commute - it's a breeze into Marylebone from Great Missenden

Trafficcone · 23/05/2010 13:16

Now she's given up work I don't know why she doesn't move to the constituency house and move the kids to local schools. That said, I'd not want my dh in London and me in Oxfordshire if I was due in a few months.

toccatanfudge · 24/05/2010 23:06

but she hasn't given up work - she's still going to be working part time.......

Clary · 24/05/2010 23:13

Man oh man, that's unbelievable!

It's like Prince Charles, once the Queen dies, saying, oh I didn't realise I would have to attend the state opening of parliament (or whatever).

The house (and associated security etc) goes with the job, surely. Don't want the house - don't take the job then!

Actually I believe the Blairs lived at Number 11 as it has more space....?

Songbird · 25/05/2010 09:03

Yep, Blairs were in no. 11, Gordon Brown was in no. 10.

NoSleepTillWeaning · 25/05/2010 10:14

Maybe she thinks it will be easier in summer holidays when heavily pregnant - close to friend network, garden etc.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 25/05/2010 10:17

I believe that they are moving in to No !0 this week and will the move to Mo11 once the kitchen has been done, they will be using the allowance for rennovations which every PM gets and meeting any extra costs themselves.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 25/05/2010 10:35

As someone who has had to move many times dues to DH's work (and sometimes to really really horrible places) I can sympathise. I once moved on my due date but DD2 arrived 5 days late (fortunately) so at least some of my stuff was unpacked.
I think this is a bit of a big deal about nothing. Why do the press take such delight in portraying wives (of anyone, not just politicians) as foot stomping harridans 'refusing' to do as they are told? Cherie Blair was villified for having her own strong personality, like it is a crime to have independent opinion. We only know these people by how they are portrayed in the media and, as the song says, when they own the information, they can bend it all they want.

Downdog · 25/05/2010 10:36

surely this is a condition of the job - become PM? live at Downing St & let's not forget about Chequers which they get too!

Spidermama · 25/05/2010 10:45

This is the absolute height of selfishness. I'm appalled.

williewalshsballs · 25/05/2010 11:07

It's shocking though that we can only manage a couple of pokey flats for our dear leaders. I hope in future prosperous times something will be done about it.

Spidermama · 25/05/2010 11:24

WWB they should be fulfilled and happy enough given the honour of running a country. They shouldn't need space and other luxurious trappings.

williewalshsballs · 25/05/2010 11:39

It's not just about them though. It's about how we're perceived by the rest of the world.

paisleyleaf · 25/05/2010 11:43

Where are we at with the expenses scandal now?
The cost of running the extra house should perhaps be in keeping with that.

HalfTermHero · 25/05/2010 12:05

Typical and a disgrace. No surprise to me but then I didn't vote Tory.

PotPourri · 25/05/2010 12:10

imo, it comes with the job. she shouildmove or else pay for the security themselves.. It's not like it wads a surprise... Pregnany homones probably alot to do with it though...
