What has wiltshire got to do with a piss poor James Bond film?
And does passing for a mancunian involve wearing flares, a hoody and calling everyone "our kid"

SoupDragon · 22/07/2005 11:51

I got lost in Trowbridge once . Had to phone my inlaws to come and fetch me from Tescos. It's nto an experience I would wish to repeat and thankfully, they've since moved to Spain.

Caligula · 22/07/2005 11:52

Do Wilthsire folk only come out after 10PM when they've downed several cans of special brew?

WideWebWitch · 22/07/2005 11:52

My dad used to say Wiltshire (the county) was 'spooky'

Caligula · 22/07/2005 11:56

Not as spooky as Wiltshire (the poster)!

SoupDragon · 22/07/2005 11:57

May I remind you that MN Towers do not tolerate personal attacks so please confine your comments to the county.

tarantula · 22/07/2005 11:59

oooo do we need reminding of the MN philosophy? Anyone got it please

suedonim · 22/07/2005 12:03

Omg, I've just been to stay with friends in Wiltshire - now I know why I've been feeling a bit odd ever since!! Am v envious of their access to Waitrose/Ocado though. DD2 v disappointed that she wasn't allowed to hug Stonhenge, which is less than two miles from where said friends live.

SoupDragon · 22/07/2005 12:05

The MN philosophy can be read here

suedonim · 22/07/2005 12:06

Oooh, FUMOP, have noticed a worrying trend in that friend's dh has become obsessed with crop circles since moving to Wiltshire. But he's not all bad - he lay down in the road in Salisbury as a protest against the Iraq war. (Friend did point out that the road was pedestriansed but it's the thought that counts. )

you are allowed to hug the stones at Avebury though, best done at night after downing the special brew.... I have spent many a happy night prancing round the stone circle there

WigWamBam · 22/07/2005 12:17

I love hugging the stones at Avebury.

Caligula · 22/07/2005 12:21

Ha ha ha I didn't get caught by the bat, I didn't get caught by the bat, I know it's the bat!

moozoboozo · 22/07/2005 12:22

It was on ITV west the other day that the Avebury locals are sick of tree hugging, beer swilling, sandal wearing hippies coming along and making the place look untidy.

WigWamBam · 22/07/2005 12:24

The stones have been there a lot longer than the locals ...

And for what it's worth, I only hug stones, I don't swill beer, and I don't wear sandals - my feet are too hobbit-like for sandals

Fennel · 22/07/2005 12:24

moozoboozo the locals in Avebury are sheep and rock stars. noone much else lives there.

Fennel · 22/07/2005 12:25

i have birkenstock sandals, naturally

Sorry, this it totally unrelated to Wiltshire but I wnated to share. I read this in dh's Viz this morning and thought it a subtle work of genius.

Thank goodness the jury saw sense and aquitted Michael Jackson. The prosecution didn't bring forward one credible witness. The case hung on the evidence of a woman who was the kind of person who would let her children sleep with a suspected paedophile. How could nayone believe what she said.

We 'did' Avebury on our visit to Wiltshire last year! Someone's greyhound peed against one of the stones, lol. Last time dh and I visited Stonehenge it was free and you could do some boulder hugging. Mind you, we also had to walk across a muddy field to reach it. It's a bit sanitised now, what with audio-guides droning on and vast coach parties of disinterested kids and bemused Americans swarming around. (Come to think of it, we didn't pay this time either, as we're members of NTS. )

dillydally · 22/07/2005 12:51

NTS - New wave Tree huggers Society??

moozoboozo · 22/07/2005 12:51

Theres a nice pub in Avebury, just by the stones. I remember the chips were nice there.

Fennel · 22/07/2005 12:56

stone huggers please.

you can't "do" avebury you have to experience it.

many other spooky sites around the area too, maybe I should customise a special leyline stone-hugging tour?
