Gay couple turned away from B & B

Apparently the lady proprietor, on seeing two men arrive, hummed and hedged and muttered about their only being one bed in the room etc, before actually coming out (Ooh, no pun intended) and turning them away. Saw a brief clip of the b & b owners being interviewed and the man said something to the effect of "we have our children in the house to think of".

I won't be rushing to book a stay at their place ...

I feel sorry for both parties. Regardless of what is politically correct, it is very hard for some people to accept gay couples, and of course it is against some christian teaching. On the other hand, the gay couple were embarrased and inconvenienced by the whole thing.
I've run a B+B in the past, and I suppose the lady in question was a bit slow. The first comment could have been "Oh dear, I'm ever so sorry, but we've had a nasty leak in the bathroom of our double, the smell is frankly disgusting. Would you mind if I put you in a twin instead? It is a little bit cheaper." Or if no other rooms available "Can I make you a cup of tea while I ring a couple of other B+B's I can recommend and book you in with them?". I must admit, we've had gay couples, a cross dressing man, all sorts staying with us. They tend not to be the problem guests.
Yet a muslim pharmacist can refuse to supply the contraceptive pill on the grounds that it is against her religion. Maybe the law needs to be extended to include discrimination on the grounds of your family planning choices?

B&Bs now forced to offer meusli as a gay breakfsat option!

the problem is that the law isn't black and white. Because while technically you can't discriminate on the basis of sexuality, in reality there are situations where this is permitted.

Gay men are, for instance, not allowed to donate blood. Isn't that discrimination on the basis of sexuality? And yet it is permitted in the interests of health.

Also while technically you can't discriminate, as a business owner you can actually refuse to serve anyone. It's not right, but you can't force a company to sell a service to you if they don't want to - you can take them to court for discrimination afterwards and gain compensation, but it doesn't change the act at the time iyswim.

It's nothing to do with political correctness. It's to do with fairness and the law of the land.'
