Gay couple turned away from B & B

Apparently the lady proprietor, on seeing two men arrive, hummed and hedged and muttered about their only being one bed in the room etc, before actually coming out (Ooh, no pun intended) and turning them away. Saw a brief clip of the b & b owners being interviewed and the man said something to the effect of "we have our children in the house to think of".

I won't be rushing to book a stay at their place ...

Fivegomadindorset made a good point. Plenty of other places don't want dogs or children - how come they get to choose? (I'm not agreeing with the couple here by the way!)

Lewisfan - you can be christian and gay!

pigsinmud · 23/03/2010 09:48

I took so long writing that post that blogpage said the same thing!

pumperspumpkin · 23/03/2010 09:52

Advertising as "Christian only" would also be discriminatory in any case.

LoveBeingAMummy · 23/03/2010 09:54

This will defo be followed through by them as one is a Liberal Democrat councillor, there's no way he will let this go.

seeker · 23/03/2010 09:58

There are no laws that say you are not allowed to discriminate against dogs or children.

hatwoman · 23/03/2010 10:02

hostility towards gay people on Christian grounds is something I just can't get my head around.

it's counter to everything Jesus stood for. he certainly wouldn't have turned them away.

DunderMifflin · 23/03/2010 10:03

Why do religious beliefs hold the trump card on everything when surely, they're just an opinion?

As other people have pointed out, the bible mentions some practices that today we'd find bizarre so why do some christians decide that anti-homosexuality is one of the parts of the bible they're going to adhere to?

Does the b&b open on Sundays?

seeker · 23/03/2010 10:04

Interesting to know if they would turn away an unmarried couple about to have a baby too........!

hatwoman · 23/03/2010 10:04

exactly seeker!

Its not just their own home - they run their business from there...

It is their home but the part of it which they run as a business is subject to business law.

LadyBiscuit · 23/03/2010 10:14

If they have strongly held religious beliefs that mean they will discriminate illegally against people then they should find some other way of making a living. I don't give a stuff if it's their home. No one forces you to run a B&B at gunpoint after all.

seeker · 23/03/2010 10:18

So if I ran a printing business from my home (I know someone who does - that's why I use the example) I could print anything I liked, however defamatory or inflammatory because "it was my home?"

If I run a catering business from home, it's OK if I don't comply with food handling regulations?

DunderMifflin · 23/03/2010 10:21

Childminders usually work from home.

dawntigga · 23/03/2010 10:23

FFS having a dog or a child is a life choice being gay isn't, therefore it isn't even remotely the same.

What about if a BNP member turned up spouting racist crap - would they have to let them stay?

pumperspumpkin · 23/03/2010 10:27

No because it's not illegal to discriminate on grounds of political belief in the UK (and anyway if you got rid of them because of the spouting, the courts would say it was because of their actions not their belief in any case that you barred them).

pigsinmud · 23/03/2010 10:29

It's all quite fascinating! So they could ban Tories and that would be fine .... something tells me they wouldn't want to ban Tories though.

seeker · 23/03/2010 10:31

The law of this country states the groups that it is illegal to discriminate against. Dogs are not one of those groups. Neither are racists. Or children. Or Daily Mail readers.

'What about if a BNP member turned up spouting racist crap - would they have to let them stay'
