what on earth is wrong with these parents?

Lulumaam · 15/03/2010 22:05

the only thing I can think is that they wanted to save the child and themsleves the distress of proceedings and a trial?

even so, selling your child and other children who could have been protected from this person is disgusting and something the child might find hard to deal with

just a smaller version of Jordy Chandler's parents taking £££ from Michael Jackson, which was also reprehensible IMO

there is no amount of money in the world that would be enough for me to let the abuser of my child get away with it
in fact, i would spend every penny i had and more to have justice done

Coldhands · 15/03/2010 22:06

That is shocking!

The fact that they would let this monster go free to do this to someone else just so they could get their house deposit!!! No bloody better than prosituting their son out IMO. Sounds extreme but I am really disgusted. There is no way I would do this if it was my DS.

giveitago · 15/03/2010 22:08

?If people across the country were doing their own bargaining over crimes what kind of society would we live in? It would be like the mafia.

Think that says it all.

Don't quite understand - was this guy his Maths teacher - at 4 years old? How did the parents find out about the abuse? And they then did a deal?

What?

Poor poor child.

MmeLindt · 15/03/2010 22:16

Shocking. Truly awful for the boy who will have to live with the knowledge that his parents preferred to take money than see his abuser punished.

And I am also surprised that the offender was not sentenced to a jail term. Is that common?

MrsGubbins · 15/03/2010 22:18

Can you imagine how this child is going to feel when he's older and discovers what his parents did? I wonder whether he has now been taken into care, the fact that the parents have been granted anonymity suggests not.

I think I find this more shocking and disturbing than Karen Matthews and her fake abduction claims.

SpeedyGonzalez · 15/03/2010 22:29

Awful, awful, awful. Although I can imagine that they were concerned about the level of additional trauma they'd expose their family to, however, to even consider the money aspect, let alone actually buy into it? Horrific.

And for the record, Jordy Chandler's parents were even worse - they cajoled Jackson into using his contacts to get Mr Chandler a film deal (he was a wannabe screenwriter). So it was all about money and forwarding his career. Vile, vile.

BAFE · 15/03/2010 23:09

It's no different than pimping out your own child is it

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/03/2010 10:26

Horrible, really horrible. Me and dh had a discusion the other evening about evil and what evil is. These parents ticked all my boxes.

borderslass · 16/03/2010 16:37

I was abused from the age of 4-12 and no amount of money even if it had been put away for me would make any difference.

Northernlurker · 16/03/2010 16:43

Oh that's awful!

I can't believe they failed to protect their child and other children and profited from it. Utter moral bankruptcy! Can they be prosecuted?

JeremyVile · 16/03/2010 16:48

How odd. I wonder if they will be prosecuted with anything?

Dont know why I keep feeling surprised when I read of the type of sentences these crimes incur - a 4yo child is abused for a year and its thought that 6 months already served is enough... Just feels wrong.

bibbitybobbityhat · 16/03/2010 16:54

The second most shocking thing about this case is that the judge thinks the offender has already served long enough by being in prison for 6 months. Excuse me, but what?????????? you get 6 months for sexually abusing a 4 year old???????????? 6 MONTHS????????

The parents should be prosecuted too.

zookeeper · 16/03/2010 17:03

They let a paedophile continue to work with other children and accepted money into the bargain.

Surely they should be punished?

Blu · 16/03/2010 17:09

I think they should be prosecuted for concealing a crime, or obstructing the course of justice, or something.
They knew a crime had been committed against a child, and then effectively blackmailed the abuser.
They had no right to decide not to go to the police - the crime wasn't against them, it was against the child.

Awful, awful people. Not fit parents.

pregnochicklol · 16/03/2010 18:07

It's awful that they did not report him to protect other children.
But I can see how they'd want to save their son from all the extra trauma from having to explain it all continiously in the police process, baring in mind that out of all rapes reported, only 5% result in convictions.

I would have had to of reported it, or personally killed the pedo in question myself (half-joke)

Maybe I would of taken the money then reported him anyway, lol.

JeremyVile · 16/03/2010 18:08

Totally agree BBH.

pregnochicklol · 16/03/2010 18:10

zookeeper I believe he agreed to quit his teaching job and move away when the money was paid.

But obviously they still turned a blind eye to him being a risk to other children :-(

pregnochicklol · 16/03/2010 18:13

Paedos get off incredibly lightly in this country and are rarely convicted,

JollyPirate · 16/03/2010 18:17

I can see the safeguarding children authorities getting involved (if they are not already involved). These parents demonstrated very clearly that they were totally unable to put the psychological needs of their child first. Not to mention any other child abused as a result of their actions.

gettingout · 16/03/2010 18:21

6 months?

Was the 18k taken into account during sentencing?
Astonishing, and a result for all paedophiles waiting in custody. Get your cheque books out and pay your way out of trouble!
The whole thing is despicable.

pregnochicklol · 16/03/2010 18:26

I wonder if judges are really educated on just how much of a devastating impact sexual abuse has on children.

mloo · 16/03/2010 18:35

I can think of a lot of reasons why parents thought it was okay. They wouldn't be good enough reasons for me, but I can understand it. If they wanted to spare the child and themselves the shame of it, if they come from a culture where it is normal for perpetrators to directly compensate victims, or if they were certain that there was no physical evidence so it would be word of a child against an adult (which again, in some cultures would never be taken seriously).

I'm not saying the parents did right, but I can understand how they justified it in their minds -- I hate them being demonised as "pimps".

NormaStanleyFletcher · 16/03/2010 18:36

I read this in the Metro this morning...

I talked with an ex prison officer today about this, and apparently paying off like this is quite common in some places (middle-eastern I think), but it is still wrong, and sometimes goes alongside the due legal process.

I tend to think that the parents should have been prosecuted for blackmail, and wonder why they haven't been.

I just feel it is so wrong to leave someone like that to abuse again. It is not just your own child involved, but every other child he comes into contact with, that you are putting at risk

AnyFucker · 16/03/2010 18:39

wrong on soooo many levels

FabIsDoingPrettyWell · 16/03/2010 18:39

I better just put as I really can't bring myself to post what I want too. I can't face it.
