Actually, thinking about it, it is probably very likely that the manager has or has had mental health issues (feel bad now for calling him 'rather strange' ), so I suppose that could be a reason why the senior manager would want to support him.

bibbitybobbityhat · 05/03/2010 10:59

Am surprised you hadn't thought of it before, Botbot, especially as you are a regular customer. There cannot be a person in ED who doesn't know exactly who this person is. Humiliating for him. I would dare to suggest even more humiliating for him than for the bf mother he treated so poorly.

Yes, you're right, Bibbity.

Interesting comments on here - hadn't thought initially that the manager could have had mental health issues himself, so thanks.

However, the comments on the article, especially a 10 month old is too old to be bf!....words fail me.
And these people have a vote

What puzzles me is the number of posts which say breastmilk/breastfeeding smells....it really, really doesn't, you know

BITCAT · 05/03/2010 16:56

Scotland has the right idea..it is actually against the law there to disturb a mother breastfeeding there child. These things always make me angry..i breastfed all 4 of mine and would have done it anywhere. If the baby needs feeding you feed them dont you? Manners cost nothing and a simple sorry would have been the decent thing to do. Its about time mps did something about the whole breast feeding in public debate, its a natural normal thing why is it frowned upon by so many narrow minded people. We should take a leaf out of scotlands books and follow suit

30andLurking · 05/03/2010 16:56

Oh wow, it gets worse...

COMPROMISING POSITION??

BITCAT · 05/03/2010 17:12

Dont think much of that journalist..has she got kids. i mean im pretty sure most mums arent anythinmg like she described. We have every right to breastfed our children where ever we are its the narror mindedness of other people that have the problem..breast feeding is not sexual..its a natural thing..animals do it..its the reason we were originally given breasts..its only humans that have made it sexualised

Megancleo · 05/03/2010 20:43

Grief, am I glad I live in Germany sometimes! Here nobody expects a nursing mother to go and find a hidden place to feed her baby and I think thats why I breast-fed all three of mine. On holiday in England I always tried to carry on as normal but it was always difficult, once being asked to go in the toilets to continue feeding and many strange looks! Its like breasts are only there to appear in page three of Newspapers! I honestly think the present debate about little girls not being left to be little girls is a mirror of a society that in some ways is obsessed with sex and yet has problems with its puritanical roots and sees every show of a breast as undignified. I think its brilliant that any woman continues to breastfeed in such circumstances!
Incidently, just as Americans say nursing, the German language also has a seperate word for feeding your baby whereas in English BREAST-feeding already relates it to sex!

Adair · 05/03/2010 20:59

I agree with others who suggest he may have had mental health issues himself, 'breast milk stinks' sounds bizarre to me and this was my first thought.

As for Jan Moir, I can't even be bothered to read the vile and offensive drivel that dribbles out of her mouth.

MamaGoblin · 05/03/2010 21:03

Um - this might be flameworthy, but if - if - the manager himself has mental health problems and that is why he's been employed by a MIND shop, does that still give him the right to abuse his customers? He's being paid by MIND (if he's the manager he's an employee, I presume, not a volunteer) to provide a service. His actions are suspect at best, and potentially downright dodgy. If he did have mental health problems, I am naturally sympathetic, but is it appropriate for him to be in a position where he can do things like this?

But hey, none of us really know the full story or anything about the protagonists.

And I really must NOT read DM comments. I'm sure it does nasty things to my blood pressure.

thumbwitch · 05/03/2010 21:08

There really is no need to bash mothers who BF. Really. No wonder so many women stop BF so quickly in the UK, despite the campaigns, when people like that idiotic woman are allowed to publish their disgusting views in the vile toxic rag that shapes the views of so many people, women in particular. Makes me sick.

bibbitybobbityhat · 05/03/2010 21:17

I find it odd that people are so shocked by this incident.

Of course its wrong.

Of course its offensive.

But then much much worse happens all day every day to innocent people in this country.

Open prejudice and hatred based purely on the way people look or the colour of their skin of the level of their IQ.

No, of course mental health problems does not give this manager the right to abuse his customers. It may possibly offer some explanation for why he did it.

I'm not sure that going to the press with this story has served any purpose. All thats happened is that it has been taken up by one of the most unpopular journalists of the day and allowed a load of random bigots to post rubbish on the Dail Mail message board.

Pretty rubbish outcome, I'd say.

Adair · 05/03/2010 21:18

Oh gosh, no, I agree he should be told that his actions were wrong and if he DID spray air freshener at her then that is assault (and needs to be dealt with). But we can also be understanding, and tbh I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Of course he should have been given the chance to work in the shop BEFORE he did anything wrong..! What, don't employ people with mental illnesses at all? Don't employ men in schools just in case they turn paedo?

(thumbwitch she only gets paid to write things that offend as many people as possible. Laugh at her ridiculous views and move on. Not worth any time at all arguing against complete nonsense IMO)

Adair · 05/03/2010 21:18

Or what bibbitybobbity said. Much more clearly than me

thumbwitch · 05/03/2010 21:22

Adair, I'm sure you're right. It's the knock-on effect of all the drivel that pisses me off.

I have moved on, honestly!

sungirltanhasanactualhairstyle · 05/03/2010 23:19

jan moir is an evil batch

duchesse · 06/03/2010 16:28

For some reason the DM always reminds me of the sneaky child at school who's always going around telling stories about everybody and winding everyone up against each other. Kind of the opposite of a peacemaker.

I'm actually wondering if the manager of the shop doesn't have some mental health issues- his behaviour if accurately reported sounds quite odd.

sprogger you beat me to it. I was just about to say we all know the lovely Ms Moir hates gays, teachers, social workers and feminists. It should come as no surprise that this vindictive little shrew should hate babies and breastfeeders as well. Quel surprise.

TBH I am amazed the DM did not sack her following her spiteful diatribe against Stephen Gately. But I guess that fact alone tells us everything we need to know about the DM!

donnie · 08/03/2010 09:59

I have, in the past, wondered whether it is possible for someone like jan Moir to have friends.
