FIMAC1 cam you not just be pleased London won?

SecondhandRose · 06/07/2005 13:17

Merde!

nutcracker · 06/07/2005 13:17

No actually, although I said it should have been in Brum, I actually think I would have preffered it if it was in another country.

Like i said, i just think there are far more important things it could have been spent on and that some people will end up paying for it when they will have no benfit at all.

nutcracker · 06/07/2005 13:18

Is the council tax increae just for London or everywhere ??

Ladymuck · 06/07/2005 13:18

Tessa Jowell has been quoted as saying that those who benenfit more should pay more, yea. But again this will only be for a proportion of the total cost. The $17bn or whatever it ends up as won't all be funded by taxpayers - otherwise I suspect that there wouldn't have been a bid!

Heathcliffscathy · 06/07/2005 13:18

god i'm just so emotional and incredibly excited by this....i haven't even given it a second thought til today as i was sure we wouldn't get it.

this is going to change all of our lives for the good imo. you all have kids: imagine their excitement in the lead up, imagine their sense of pride...

this will make all the 'cool britannia' nonsense (that still felt good at the time) look like nothing...

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 13:19

Anti-French comments are out of place - they would have done an excellent job. I hope we can do as good a job as Paris did for the World Cup in 1998 .

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 13:20

sophable, agree agree

emmatmg · 06/07/2005 13:20

Nutty, you posts sounds like We have won as in just Londoners......and noone else is welcome or going to benefit.

WE have ALL won......ALL of us in the UK...it's not going to be cheap or easy to sort out but think of opportunties for our children.

What an experience for them (and us), do you enjoy watching the olympics normally?

Ladymuck · 06/07/2005 13:21

Nutcracker, dodgy grounds for not paying for something to be publicly funded! Don't you have to look at the overall benefits on the country?

nutcracker · 06/07/2005 13:22

Ok what are the benefits for anywhere other than London going to be ????

beatie · 06/07/2005 13:22

hmc - I agree and I am not a Londoner either.

compo · 06/07/2005 13:22

also you say 'i just think there are far more important things it could have been spent on' but this funding wouldn't have been available if it wasn't for the Olympics

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 13:23

Yes, lets just be very grown up about it now and just be pleased for ourselves...

I've made some anti Chirac comments - not anti french so I'm ticking myself off too - but shall we leave it there...and be self effacing and modest in victory?

nutcracker · 06/07/2005 13:23

No true compo, and thats nothing to be proud of IMO

compo · 06/07/2005 13:23

Sport and fitness being put at the top of the national agenda. Children learning more about sport and becoming more passionate about it. National pride in our country.

beatie · 06/07/2005 13:23

I don't think anyone has said anything anti-French.

Are we not allowed to show our delight in winning something for a change?

milward · 06/07/2005 13:23

Interested to hear what the opportunities will be for our kids? They could have learnt all about the other country if another had won.

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 13:25

Being able to wave the Union Jack without feeling like a member of the NF

Lizzylou · 06/07/2005 13:25

We live in Lancashire, but are planning our trip down to the capital already! I did agree about Brum being a good choice, but it doesn't have the kudos and could you even begin to imagine what the M6 would be like??? Altho I know a lot of work needs to be done for the transport infrastructure of London.
It is fantastic for the whole of the UK, and for the UK's sport/health infrastructure...

compo · 06/07/2005 13:25

Why is this country always so negative about everything. Can't you just be pleased to have won something for a change!

KBear · 06/07/2005 13:25

FANTASTIC news - I am thrilled.

dyzzidi · 06/07/2005 13:25

I am really pleased we won but.... nor everyone in the uk will be and i respect their choices. Nutcracker i recognize some of you points but do believe it will enrich the UK. I'm in Mcr and loved the commonwealth games and all the refurbishment work carried out is still evident today. Yet I agree it now means nothing to people from other parts of the UK.

I personally hope this will encourage successful bid for the world cup and other international events.

milward · 06/07/2005 13:25

There have been anti-french comments - check further down the thread beatie.

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 13:25

Beatie - no we haven't really been anti-french and just had a good old joke at Chirac's expense, but I'm coming over all empathetic to frenchgirl and ggglimpopo etc plus other mumsnetters with french connections

(unusual territory for me - this empathy business)
