www - profit making for uk plc = more income = more tax money without raising tax rates.

Heathcliffscathy · 06/07/2005 14:22

www: are you a communist? the manufacturing sector is severely under pressure atm, anything that saves/creates jobs would be a source of happiness to most people interested in the welfare of the poor...unless you want to scrap capitalism altogether (i'm not arguing that, as i think it is probably a good plan, but back in the world we live in!)

ninah · 06/07/2005 14:22

totally agree with www. this view is not popular in the office either tho!
I seem to remember similar arguments about regeneration being put around the Millenium Dome project another govt led enterprise - well it's still a wasteland, millions were squandered

robinia · 06/07/2005 14:22

Apparently Sydney made a profit - so if we run this Games well we could make a profit and have all the benefits as well. Would that persuade all the doom-and-gloomers?

SenoraPostrophe · 06/07/2005 14:22

and anyway, you never know, the games might make a profit.

WideWebWitch · 06/07/2005 14:23

Re showing the world what we're made of/inspirational builings, er, The Dome, anyone?

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 14:23

I'm astounded by the some of the attitudes on this thread. Will revisit it when I've calmed down a bit.

Blu · 06/07/2005 14:23

OK: think of the manufacturing industries close to where you live. Wherever that might be. What do you think their MD's are doing right now? Planning ways in which they can win supply contracts for the work done in the run-up, and for the games themselves, and for the ensuing tourist frenzy.

The construction workers in the docklands develpments came from all over the country - but primarily the NE and N Ireland, for instance.

Things are just not so parochial any more that the money will stay within the bounds of the M25!

SenoraPostrophe · 06/07/2005 14:23

snap robinia!

Heathcliffscathy · 06/07/2005 14:23

nutcracker, that's what i've been trying to do. and imo there will probably be more equipment as a knock on from winning this bid yes.

aloha · 06/07/2005 14:23

increased funding for sport? what a hideous thought.

SenoraPostrophe · 06/07/2005 14:24

actually i think the dome was great. They shouldn't have spent half the money they did on it, and they were hopelessly optimistic about ticket sales, but it was great.

SaintGeorge · 06/07/2005 14:24

Influx of tourism to Birmingham - Villa Park will have some of the football matches.

Blu · 06/07/2005 14:25

No, www, Baltic, Sage, The Lowry Centre, Tate St Ives, the De La Warr pavilion, to name world famous inspirational buildings OUTSIDE london.

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 14:25

Why aloha?

robinia · 06/07/2005 14:25
Grin
WideWebWitch · 06/07/2005 14:25

ninash, x posted re the Dome! Sophable, no, am not a communist and yes, I do see that money in UK plc can be a good thing but actually, do we really think all the associated goods will be made in the UK? Really? Not in Thai factories? Gosh. Flashingnose, no-one's being horrible are they? why so cross?

Heathcliffscathy · 06/07/2005 14:25

aloha, shame on you. physical exercise is crucial in tackling some of the health problems of our children....come on!

nutcracker · 06/07/2005 14:25

Well i'm afraid I will have to see that to believe it Sophable.

IMO this will benefit only people in London and anyone who is lucky enough to be able to afford to go and watch the events.

Anyone outside London who can't afford that will be excluded.

Blu · 06/07/2005 14:26

Aloha - don't worry, take that wet flannel from your forehead, there's going to be a huge associated arts festival as well!

wilbur · 06/07/2005 14:26

I agree it would be a much better world if money for regeneration and transport would be available without an excuse, but it simply isn't. It's like the Americans saying that their polluting companies can be relied on to self-regulate. No they can't. Sometimes you have to be pragmatic and realise that things that should be essential have to piggyback on something like this.

robinia · 06/07/2005 14:26

Surely you can't be serious aloha
Does it need to be spelt out?????

Lizzylou · 06/07/2005 14:26

HMC, I could only understand a bit of the article, none of the juicy Tony Blair stuff unfortunately...then had to do RL work..ugh!

I really can't believe the negativity surrounding 2012 already..."londoners" are annoyed it's in London and those from the provinces annoyed it won't affect their area of the country!

Can we all just be positive and enjoy a great time to be British and to have something to be proud about?

FWIW my DH is a true Lancashire lad and gets really annoyed at London-centric news/weather etc, yet he has phoned me and is really excited at the prospect that we may be able to be a part of something so exciting in our lifetime!

Blu · 06/07/2005 14:26

Nutty - have you read my posts about nation-wide manufacturing industries????

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 14:26

"I'm astounded by the some of the attitudes on this thread. Will revisit it when I've calmed down a bit".

Which ones? Do tell! You can't leave us on a cliffhanger
