Obese people have to pay for two plane seats

Overweight passengers who cannot squeeze into a single plane seat are to be charged double to fly with Air France.

People who cannot fit into a standard seat will be asked to pay for two seats, or not be allowed on board for "safety reasons", according to the airline.

I was once trapped on a flight from France to Perth with a teenage Rugby team, we were near the toilets as well. Dear god teenage boys smell BAD after 15 hours on a plane.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 14:51

Boak, Morloth!

Remember when you could still smoke on planes?

Eeeew.

I was on a flight from NYC to Paris and the smoking section was so full, some smokers had to sit with the non-smokers.

When the pilot turned off the no smoking sign, so many people crowded into the smoking section he had to order people back to their seats!

I got off with a nicotine headache and reeking like a nightclub and I didn't even smoke then!

prettybird · 21/01/2010 15:04

Eughhhh expat.

Before smoking was banned, I always made a point of asking for a seat as far possible from the smoking section. I can remember that Garuda and Air France could never see what the big deal was

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 15:10

It was Air France, pretty, and I got stuck two rows in front of where the smoking section began.

Barf.

I learned my lesson after that.

GrimmaTheNome · 21/01/2010 15:10

Oh yes, prettybird, me too. And DH - we were once seated in the row next to smoking and when he realised, he said he'd get off the plane if we weren't moved... just as it took off, so he didn't.

prettybird · 21/01/2010 15:20

expat and Grimma. I too learned the hard way to be specific about where to sit!

it's a joy nowadays that that's at least one thing you don't need to worry about

Ds, without us even trying, would be the most difficult to control - he would probably start saying "that person smells" in a loud voice. He already tells me that if he walks past someone smoking, he holds his breath as he doesn't want to breath in their poison. His latest (a couple fo nights ago) was that if he were PM, he would shut down the cigarette factories as that was the easist way to stop people smoking. (Cue disucssion about importing illegal drugs and drug pushing! )

Clearly there is a need for Bariatric Planes.

I'm with the 'pay for two spaces but don't humiliate people' brigade.

Morloth · 21/01/2010 16:05

Am too young to remember smoking on planes .

But I have heard that apparently the air quality was slightly better because at least the smoke was visible and had to be flushed out occasionally. Is probably an urban myth though.

Right, so people who overflow into other's seats, talkers and smelly types should all pay extra, oh and also men cause they don't run the risk of sitting next to other people's brats.

All sorted then, who will be flying on Morloth Air?

GrimmaTheNome · 21/01/2010 16:08

Morloth, you forgot to include people who are able to sleep for the entire duration of a Red-eye flight, snoring loudly throughout so that no-one else can.

My former bosses wife warned me to get seated well away from him when coming back from the US - she was quite right!

prettybird · 21/01/2010 16:16

That's me Morloth - althugh with only *quiet snoring snuffling.

Did a lot of long distance travelling in my teens and as a result can sleep anywhere anytime - even when I want to read do work.

prettybird · 21/01/2010 16:17

Meant Grimma, not Morloth

steamedtreaclesponge · 21/01/2010 16:25

Actually, I believe airlines can refuse to fly people who smell really bad, for the comfort of the other passengers...

Morloth · 21/01/2010 16:32

I wonder if they do a "sniff" test? If the beagle passes out, that is probably a No.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 16:33

[renames thread, 'Flights from HELL!']

prettybird · 21/01/2010 17:19

Now that would make an interesting [horror] thread!

not double I think but one and three quarters of the price.

But why not? If you take up two seats you should pay for them imho. They're trying to run a quality travel business not human bulk freighting.

questioneverything · 22/01/2010 11:11

Maybe kate moss could only pay for half a seat.

Morloth · 22/01/2010 11:33

Kate Moss looks like she would come under the "smelly" tag, so no seat for her. She might not, but I always think she would smell like yesterday's clothes, old fags and bar mats.

Can't imagine why anyone would want to buy her perfume.

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/01/2010 11:47

Lol at Bariatric seats.

Oh how awfulwas it when you could smoke on flights. I remember flying all around the damn world with my gran when I was a kid, who loved her ciggies, all the while sat in the smoking section. Urgh. This was only the late 80s/early 90s, is like another world.

JeffVadar · 22/01/2010 11:51

This was taken by a member of the cabin crew on a US flight

nigelslaterfan · 22/01/2010 12:53

ouch jeffvader, that is a one buttock on situation..... scary and no doubt smelly.

LOL at Kate Moss stinking of fags, I'm sure that's true.

But I feel strangely sorry for her, she is totally objectified.

And I respect her no interviews stance... so dignified not to do that.

Jacksmama · 22/01/2010 16:47

So who's off to start a "FLIGHTS FROM HELL" thread then?

SmileyMylee · 22/01/2010 19:48

The funniest thing I ever saw was on a flight from London City to Edinburgh on one of those tiny planes with three tiny seats on each side.

In one row, were 3 competitors for the highland games. They must have been about 6ft 5 each and about 25 - 30 stones each (think 3 Giant Haystacks in a row - they looked like they were sitting in toddler seats). The stewardesses couldn't stop laughing it looked so comical.

Jacksmama · 23/01/2010 17:53

Ok I started a HORRIBLE FLIGHTS FROM HELL thread - over here, everyone!
