Obese people have to pay for two plane seats

Overweight passengers who cannot squeeze into a single plane seat are to be charged double to fly with Air France.

People who cannot fit into a standard seat will be asked to pay for two seats, or not be allowed on board for "safety reasons", according to the airline.

But tall people and obese people are both paying for a service (lest we forget) and really not being adequately provided for, it seems kinda wrong to me.

'But tall people and obese people are both paying for a service (lest we forget) and really not being adequately provided for, it seems kinda wrong to me.'

Then we all have to pay, regardless of whether or not we are very tall or obese.

Fewer seats = higher prices.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 09:12

Most people can fit in the seats provided.

I don't see why the rest of us should pay more for a bigger seat we don't need.

It's like minimum pricing for alcohol, why should responsible drinkers pay for irresponsible ones with no self-control or restraint?

Seems fair enough to me - it's been brewing for years I think.

I got a lovely UTI flying back from Australia after being hemmed into my seat by a man who definitely should have had two seats.

He promptly fell asleep and only woke up to eat .

I couldn't climb over him for a wee and spent the 14hrs back from Hong Kong busting!

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 09:21

'I couldn't climb over him for a wee and spent the 14hrs back from Hong Kong busting!'

He's very lucky he wasn't sitting next to me.

Because I'd have woken his ass up if I had to shout at the flight attendant.

Sorry, but bodily functions are bodily functions.

And I don't have the pelvic floor to hold mine in much anymore.

If you need two seats then you must pay for two seats, I don't understand why anyone would think otherwise. I once sat on an 8 hour flight and I was only using half my seat as the large person seated next to me was taking up half my seat it was hell!

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 11:48

'Being an eco-type I'm kind of hoping plane travel gets more expensive and elss used anyhow '

So people like us who only fly once a year to see ageing parents can then not afford to see them.

they need to buy travel insurance, too, because if anything happens to them here they may well have to pay for it.

i found the annual policy cheaper than single trip for our family.

going to have to just keep one going in case dad falls ill suddenly and i need to go quickly.

You don't take a plane to Paris for lunch, you take the Eurostar. Not that I would know or anything...

Oh well, if it your own plane! To be honest I had my own plane I would probably fly to the other side of London, cause hell I have my own plane!

I didn't really go to Paris just for lunch. It was for a meeting and lunch.

ronshar · 21/01/2010 12:39

The issue is with the fuel load as well as passenger comfort.
If you have a plane full of "overweight" people then you will need more fuel to get the plane off the ground. That fuel has to be paid for.
It is one of the reasons you get charged for extra luggage.

Why should people of normal weight pay extra for the people who are taking up two or three seats?

choppychopster · 21/01/2010 13:04

You know those wire cages that they have to check if your hand luggage is not too big? I have visions of Air France installing an approximate seat sized ones at check in and seeing who gets their arse stuck.

TheWorldFamousKewcumber · 21/01/2010 13:05

Why are we still discussing this? I don't think that anyone (perhaps one) disagrees. Even those of us who are obese can see that its reasonable.

One point to note though, most people who become morbidly obese have no medical reason behind it, though there is often a "tipping point" where something in life changes. However once you are morbidly obese the normal rules of diet and exercise just don't apply. The effect (affect?) on your mobility and joints the insulin resistance from years of poor diet result in an inability ion many cases to lose weight and in other cases to keep it off. There is plenty of evidence that it is very rare for anyone morbidly obese to make any weight loss permanent.

The head of metabolic medicine at Charing Cross hosptial says that the best way to put on wieght is to diet and most obese people have been on one diet after another.

No-one thinks they will become morbidly obese when they are a bit chubby or when they are overweight, particularly because they are on an off diets and often losing weight for periods of time. The game is really lost once your BMI goes above 35.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 14:39

I'd happily give up half my seat rather than sit next to someone who smells as dire as this woman sitting next to me once on a flight from Miami to San Juan.

I had to use the barf bag, it was that bad. And I hadn't even had kids yet (my stomach is weak as hell now).

alibubbles · 21/01/2010 14:41

The seats in my DH's little plane are very small ] He does fly me to France for lunch. ( Ducks and runs for cover!)

alibubbles · 21/01/2010 14:42

Whoops what happened to my ?

prettybird · 21/01/2010 14:44

Expat - I had mentioned this thread to dh and he also said "what about the BO?" - but I didn't dare contribute that to the thread.

Although I have now

alibubbles · 21/01/2010 14:45

He also needs to know my weight, and two of my friends wanted to come too, I told them they'd have to give me their weights for a weight and balance check, for the amaount of fuel we take, they took a raincheck!

expatinscotland · 21/01/2010 14:48

Oh, this person wasn't obese, prettybird.

She just smelled like rotting meat.

It was awful.

Longest 90 minutes of my life and the plane was packed to the gunners.

On the way back, my ex h got sat next to someone, again not obese, who reeked (not as badly as my experience, but pretty bad) and when the airline wanted volunteers to give up seats ($800 in cash, plus a bump to business class on the next flight (the following day), hotel and restaurant vouchers) we couldn't get out of our seats fast enough!
