.. for taking over Cadburys.

A disgusting cheesey-vegemite-chocolate corporate mix. a finger of fudge to you greedy hedgefunds.

So where do I get my UK/EU Fairtrade/Quaker-based chocolate now?

MerlinsBeard · 19/01/2010 17:41

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO all i can think of is Kraft cheese slices

edam · 19/01/2010 21:11

Am feeling very grumpy about this. Ruddy City spivs, wasn't it enough to bring the entire world economy to its knees, do they have to start messing with my Dairy Milk too?

Seriously, it's a shame, as the key decisions about the firm will be taken in the US, and there will be job losses. Cadbury is an iconic company with a tradition of working with social conscience - long gone now, I guess but doubt Kraft has anything of the kind. And the Yanks' idea of chocolate is horrifying.

Will they be loading the company with debt in order to fund the takeover?

TheCrackFox · 19/01/2010 21:27

I have never really got over Nestles buying Rowntrees and that was decades ago.

End of an era. Any job losses or change of recipes and I will be boycotting.

muminlondon · 19/01/2010 21:28

I know York quite well and Kraft closed down Terry's there, leaving a massive and quite beautiful factory with its heart ripped out. Rowntree's don't exist any more despite giving its name to a lovely riverside park.

Quite apart from the fact thousands more in Bournville will probably lose their jobs now, and that the UK doesn't own anything or manufacture anything any more, I just can't stand US chocolate, or biscuits for that matter (Oreos are like dog biscuits).

So it's Thorntons or Divine chocolate for me from now on. Must find some others.

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 19/01/2010 21:31

Stupid Kraft. Took over vegemite and then won't even allow the product into the USA. Cadburys is going to taste like nasty hersheys now

muminlondon · 19/01/2010 21:38

Isn't Hersheys revolting? Does it even contain chocolate?

mrsfudgely · 19/01/2010 21:38

Just seen article on the times website saying that Legal and General Investments , who are cadburys biggest shareholder at just over 5% ,are already objecting to the take over. So lets hope a few more do too. Unfortunately Kraft have also got some dodgy arangement so that they can buy with only 50% shareholder agreement.

muminlondon · 19/01/2010 21:44

Interesting .. There was a Kraft shareholder on the Guardian CIF page who objected to the sale, too. Wonder if anything can still be done? It's just such a symbolic faiure for this country.

OP posts:
muminlondon · 19/01/2010 21:44

erm, 'failure'

Newsnight filmed at the empty Terry's factory in York to show exactly what Kraft did there. Appalling that these vandals have now got their hands on Cadbury. (Am not going to buy Terry's chocolates again now I've realised they sacked everyone and moved production to Poland.)

They did say Nestle had invested significantly in the old Rowntree Mackintosh company though, and maintained jobs. I'm not normally a fan of Nestle, but let's hope Kraft will be following their model in this case.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 19/01/2010 22:52

Boooo, it's bad.

Is divine chocolate a UK company??? Nice chocolate, and fair trade.

edam · 19/01/2010 22:55

My sister got a long reply from Cadbury's about ethical chocolate production after I told her about a big debate on here re. fair trade. It sounded convincing although I forget the details. At least they'd thought about it. Forgive me for making assumptions, but Kraft doesn't strike me as the sort of company that would give a toss. That could be my prejudice against the purveyors of squeezy 'cheese' though.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 19/01/2010 22:57

No, I don't expect they care

edam · 19/01/2010 22:59

Golly, according to The Economic Times/India Times Kraft wanted access to the big emerging market of India, where Cadbury is a big player. Who'd have thunk it? (Although I'm not sure whether they are just trying to find an Indian angle to the story, like our newspapers saying 'plane crash in Brazil, two Brits injured'.)

Heated · 19/01/2010 23:02

Would like to... but don't have the willpower.

Now Nestle otoh, no problem.

edam · 19/01/2010 23:03

I haven't noticed any Fair Trade labels on Oreo cookies or Philadelphia cheese or Capri Sun. To be fair, that's because I don't actually buy any of that stuff. But I'm sure I'd have noticed while scanning the shelves at the supermarket.

ferfer · 20/01/2010 03:32

There is an online petition you can sign protesting the takeover. Not sure how to link it though. I live in Australia and rely on my english cadbury food parcels from my family! Will be very upset if they change the recipes.

mrsfudgely · 20/01/2010 10:09

There are two petitions regarding cadburys on www.gopetition.com if that helps .

edam · 20/01/2010 10:50

Just seen today's Guardian front page, which points out City spivs and Cadbury directors will earn megabucks from the deal, which ordinary workers stand to lose their jobs. Plus yes, the company will be loaded by debt because Kraft is borrowing the money to take it.

Clearly the City is back to its bad old ways despite being propped up by taxpayers and having brought the world economy to its knees.

TwoIfBySea · 20/01/2010 12:49

Are there any companies actually still British anymore or are they all part of some big faceless conglomerate (sp)? It is sad but I think the backlash won't matter a jot to these people, it is all about the money in their pockets. Look at how the fuel prices have changed since the greasy little speculators moved from mortgages into oil.

Three things the US are not good at food wise: bread, cheese and chocolate. Their chocolate tastes, well, doesn't taste actually.

abride · 20/01/2010 12:53

American chocolate is foul.

If they muck around with Cadbury's it would be a huge mistake IMHO. Too many people would stop buying it.

CatIsSleepy · 20/01/2010 12:59

oh I'm annoyed about this and I don't even eat cadbury's chocolate-just the whole history of the company, and the fact that they'll probably sack a load of workers in this country whilst the bigwigs merrily line their own pockets

it sucks

MilaMae · 20/01/2010 13:03

I read one weekend paper that said a lot of our more obscure chocolate will go,among others they mentioned - Curley Wurley!!!!!!!!!!!!(apologies if that is mis-spelt I'm in a rush). Sad,sad day.

Hershey tastes like vomit,I actually gagged the 1st time I had it,I can't believe that people in one of the most powerful nations in the world actually part money for that shit.

Do you think Cadbury's choc will now have Kraft stamped on it? Sob

CatIsSleepy · 20/01/2010 13:05

ah yes dh read somewhere Curly Wurlies are apparently a 'niche' product
not sure what niche that is, unless it is one populated by people who enjoy picking toffee out of their teeth

Sonnet · 20/01/2010 13:07

Whilst I agree with all the sentiments written here I do not see what good signing a petition will do now

The "proposed takeover" has been in the press since before xmas - a petition may have worked then.

Sadly I think it is too late
