Oxford riot shield sledging police officers reprimanded

here

FGS, has it really come to this? They're obviously all on a tea break - are we really so po-faced about everything at all times that these officers have to be 'reprimanded'?

Or AIBU?

What a shame. I saw a photo and hoped at the time that it would get filed under 'good community relations' rather than 'misuse of police equipment' - shows a lack of imagination on the part of their management, IMHO.

DuelingFanjo · 14/01/2010 11:54

I don't know, they were on duty were they not? Surely they shouldn't have been pissing about in the snow using work equipment?

TheCrackFox · 14/01/2010 11:55

Aw, I think that is a shame. That photo gave the police force a more human face.

DuelingFanjo · 14/01/2010 11:56

not to mention the health and safety implications.

Poledra · 14/01/2010 11:57

It's a bit miserable and po-faced, isn't it?

belgo · 14/01/2010 11:57

fantastic idea! Agree they shouldn't be reprimanded.

Hulababy · 14/01/2010 11:58

Looks they just got a reminder - hope so.

As the article says snow does bring out the child in people.

I am assuming they were just having 2 minutes break anyway.

Pure Class!

BadGardener · 14/01/2010 13:00

Makes me think of swords to ploughshares

LynetteScavo · 14/01/2010 13:01

Oh, yes, they should be reprimanded.

Very naught.

But lots of fun!

LetThereBeRock · 14/01/2010 16:10

Meanies. They shouldn't be reprimanded. It's good for people to see another side of them, they're as human as anyone.

WhenI was in Munich for Oktoberfest 2006 the polizei were going on all of the rides, and while still in uniform.
It was great to see, really made me and others smile.

ShowOfHands · 14/01/2010 16:18

The police aren't allowed tea breaks. Well dh isn't. Anyway...

I thought the footage was great. DH worked last summer at a police run fete, middle of July 30 degrees, they were told that they were not allowed to be seen drinking water or carrying bottles of water about their person as it is 'unprofessional' and not good for their image. In full uniform, including stab-proof vests, middle of summer, no water. Madness I tells ya.

I think they should get on with it and replace them with robots.

We live in a po faced society I'm afraid.

FFS this is the kind of policing that wins people over!

As an officer myself
I would make sure I didnt get caught never had any fun on public time!

abbierhodes · 14/01/2010 16:39

Showofhands, that's ridiculous! Can you imagine the headlines if they'd all started passing out?

Drinking water in hot weather is basic health and safety...they should be setting an example to the public, if anything...as a secondary school teacher I'm always reminding kids to drink water in the summer...and there's certainly always a glass on my desk!

It's possible that their ten minutes sledging may have done some good... part of the job of the police's job is to forge links with the community, surely? Perhaps earning the respect of the local teenagers by having a bot of a laugh in the park will pay dividends.

The community police round here run a few youth schemes..they join in with the kids loads, from kicking a football to learning to play musical instruments. It certainly helps to break down some barriers.

I thought of swords to ploughshares as well.

A most excellent use for riot shields, imo.

SixtyFootDoll · 14/01/2010 18:13

I might have to go and raid the 'riot' cupboard next time I need a sledge!

pofarced · 14/01/2010 18:21

I'd love to have a go on a riot shield - can't buy a sledge around here for love nor money and we've exhausted all viable household options. Good for them. Don't they realise it is good for police to show a human face?
