what the F

sorry but I think persuing this was just so awful. Three year old hits another 3 year old with a car jack when they were left alone in the car.

I do think it's ok to leave kids alone in cars for short periods of time but to persue a case like this seems extreme to me.

StealthPolarBear · 13/11/2009 08:53

well to blame the other 3 yo is ridiculous IMO

StealthPolarBear · 13/11/2009 08:54

thank god the child only suffered a gash to the head - he could have been brain damaged or worse

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 13/11/2009 09:03

What on earth were they doing in the car alone?

I am just that anyone could try to hold a 3yo responsible.

Unless there is more to this than is being reported - says the other child is now in care.

FabIsJustSoBusy · 13/11/2009 09:05

I think this is just a sign of the times.

Heard this on the news this morning, it's awful! How can another 3yo be accountable to something like this (not in the article, but was the impression they gave on the news report on R1).

The 'assailant' is irrelevant though, the boy should be compensated.

Very at "Do you think a three-year-old can be guilty of criminal violence?" on the reply form though!

What a level of violence though - quite shocking

cocolepew · 13/11/2009 09:15

Why would money help? He hasn't been left with any life altering injuries. I'm shocked at the violence but after so long I'd be looking to put it all behind me.

bubblagirl · 13/11/2009 09:21

makes you wander how a 3 yr old lifetd a car jack over and over again and why it was left in a childs reach and children left alone in car to be hit 11 times how long were they left alone was car jack on seat or on floor if so child has unstrapped managed to lift a heavy car jack onto seat and lift it repeatedly something doesnt add up to me she should have been done for negligence in all honesty for not making sure car was safe for 2 children and for leaving them alone long enough for this to happen

CaptainUnderpants · 13/11/2009 09:25

A car jack ? do you often leave yours in easy reach of your child ?

two three year olds left in car - ok not a mjaor issue as long as parents close by - popping in petrol station etc .

If victim was hit 11 times and screaming , how close by were the adults ?

Whose car was it victims or 'assailant' ?

No doubt all of us have alot of questions which will not be answered.

Yes a violent attack but I think some adults here need to have a think about their repsonsibilit in this.

SongOfThePEACHY · 13/11/2009 09:37

Our car jack is accessible to the occupants of the back seat- there's a storage box designed for it that also serves as their arm rest. In fact you can reach alla reas of the boot from thre as well.

I don't understand why anyone would blame a three year old for anything really. They're babies, they really are.

And I can think of a fewMums who might well be rubbing their hands together at what they might be able to get from us (er at about £1 a week my dears) after the way ds1 goes on in school, and it's an absolute nono toeven give him the chance to move forwards and try to have friends around if this happens- can't open ourselves up to it. The case is sad and bizarre, what it may mean for others will be the hrdest hitting aspect.

edam · 13/11/2009 09:41

When I heard the headline, I did think it was ridiculous. But the lawyer involved was on the Today programme and made the point that their argument was that victims of assault should be compensated no matter how old the person 'responsible'.

So it's not about labelling the kid who did it or calling him a criminal or blaming him in anyway - it's just saying 'the child who was hit with a car jack was injured and the criminal injuries compensation scheme should pay out'.

I can see it is debatable whether an injury caused by something that isn't a crime should qualify for the scheme, but understand the lawyer's argument.

Does sound extraordinary though - I wouldn't have thought a 3yo could lift a car jack and hit someone else with it 11 times. And yes, parents should have been supervising - how long did all this take? (But then again, don't imagine they would have thought there was any danger of this happening.)

Wonder what on earth the child who did it is like - was it the childhood equivalent of a moment of madness or is he a little thug who attacks other children regularly?

edam · 13/11/2009 09:43

peachy - the parents of the 3yo who hit the other one don't have to pay out, it's the scheme that pays out. So don't panic!

2shoes · 13/11/2009 09:43

how bizarre
the person sho should be prosecuted it the person who left the 2 tiny children alone.

SongOfThePEACHY · 13/11/2009 09:45

Ah right thank goodness- I could imagine a queue forming around the block! (may join itmyself )

CaptainUnderpants · 13/11/2009 09:45

In a way we do pay out this compenstation - as tax payers - as it is a governmnet body

FabIsJustSoBusy · 13/11/2009 09:49

How do they know it was 11 times?

I think it is ridiculous. He has had no lasting damage as far as we know whereas I know someone who has assaulted and she can't even get an apology never mind £20,000.

RustyBear · 13/11/2009 09:50

According to Radio 5 this morning the car they were left in belonged to the parents of the child who hit the other one.

belgo · 13/11/2009 09:52

What an odd case. Two small children alone in the car , with a car jack? The mother sounds a bit dim to say the least., but obviously not so dim as she knows how to exploit the system and get money.

Fascinating watching the little boy scribble on the sofa with his mother sat next to him.

edam · 13/11/2009 09:54

Yes captain but Peachy's fear was that she would be asked to stump up as an individual.

Dh never got any money when he was assaulted - tbh he and his friend had no idea which members of the gang had thumped them, the police told them which names to say. Turned out the one the police 'gave' to dh was under 21 so no compensation, while the one for dh's friend was an adult so friend qualified for money.

(I know it was wrong for dh and his friend to go along with this, but they were young and impressionable and VERY grateful the cops had rescued them.)

Disenchanted3 · 13/11/2009 09:56

The boy who did it is in care now

RustyBear · 13/11/2009 10:11

belgo - the parent who left them in the car apparently wasn't the one seeking compensation (at least, it wasn't her car they were left in)

belgo · 13/11/2009 10:15

So it could have been the attacker's parents who left them in the car?

If so, I have more understanding of the victim's mother's actions.

Jujubean77 · 13/11/2009 10:17

perhaps the Mother left him in the care of the other family on a playdate or such? Would explain....
