im sure this has done the BNP more of a dis-service than not - i think it was the right thing to do. nick griffin is a twat. he was outed as a twat. he talked like a twat. he showed himself up to be a twat. surely thats a good thing! maybe all those people who were going to vote for him out of protest will now see what they are actually voting for??? (vic hopes)

DreamsInBinary · 23/10/2009 00:19

I don't think he or his party came across well, but he/they did not some across badly enough.

Had he had a chance to speak, he would almost certainly have alienated some of his followers. As it was, I doubt he gained any, but unlikely he lost many either. A shame.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/10/2009 00:20

I don't think we'll see NG all over the BBC. They have a duty to give airtime to elected parties, but not out of proportion to the level of their support. And as NG stated that the BBC is - what was it? ultra-left wing or summat - I can't imagine he feels over comfortable there.

I'd quite like to see him Paxo'd though.

hairymelons · 23/10/2009 00:20

lollopops, how did they come across well?
He was incoherent & kept giggling nervously.

heverhoney1 · 23/10/2009 00:20

I do think that one of the audience on QT had it right - I dont think ALL BNP voters are racist homophobes, I think some do it out of a sense of frustration with main stream politics. Also by restricting what can be shown on TV means that people dont see the totality of the views of these people and rely wholy on the fairly mainstream propaganda put through your letterbox at election time.

MonstrousMerryHenry · 23/10/2009 00:20

hairy - you should be in bed! You're meant to be waking up at 4! Am crossing my fingers, toes and eyeballs for you.

yeah, some prick of a man was glaring horribly at my son in his buggy for far longer than is comfortable, then I asked him what the hell he thought he was doing, and he said 'well, he was giving me dirty looks'. What, at two years old? You know how some kids look like little bruisers because their parents are like that? Well, my DS is most definitely not. Even then I can't imagine any two-yo being capable of giving a dirty look. So then the man started going on about how he wanted to sit next to a 'nice, British person' (stressing the word 'British') instead of us. Thing is, the old lady he sat next to looked horrified when he approached her!

On a happy note, I am tucking into my first ever successful slice of fresh-out-of-the-breadmaker wholemeal bread! Mmmmm!

hairymelons · 23/10/2009 00:21

oh, I'd love to see him paxo'd. He wouldn't stand a chance.
Twat, twat, twat.

lollopops · 23/10/2009 00:23

But that's just it DIB, even if Question Time was 2 hours long, it would have been 2 hours of pantomime time. It was a nonsense. You need to catch someone like him unawares, to really show people what he is like.

MonstrousMerryHenry · 23/10/2009 00:23

Dreams: "I don't think he or his party came across well, but he/they did not some across badly enough." I agree - they hang themselves beautifully when left to their own devices.

Not at all surprised to see dp saying she thinks he came across well (though to be fair evasiveness appears to be her forte) - I came away from the programme thinking that people will take away from it whatever they want. And, judging by this thread, that's exactly what happened.

he won seats in the european parliament so they had a duty to allow him on - just like any other elected member of parliament. i think this would have done him harm - im sure that some people who voted in protest didnt actually understand the BNPs policies...i think it was a clever move actually - give people credit for common sense - im so glad he came across badly! maybe more people will see him for what he is. i think that it was the right thing to do to allow him on - he was racist, homophobic and twatlike all in one show! own goal!

MonstrousMerryHenry · 23/10/2009 00:25

Grimma - oooh, Paxo on Griffin!

MonstrousMerryHenry · 23/10/2009 00:25

hairy: "He was incoherent & kept giggling nervously." not to mention shaking like a leaf in a hailstorm.

lollopops · 23/10/2009 00:25

'lollopops, how did they come across well?
He was incoherent & kept giggling nervously'

Exactly. He didn't come out with his usual angry, homophobic, racist outbursts. But then he couldn't really, could he?

MonstrousMerryHenry · 23/10/2009 00:27

Right, I'm off for some more bread to bed, folks. Nighty.

franch · 23/10/2009 00:28

"'MMH....there are attacks on white people by blacks and asians....what do you think about that..?'"

DP - there are undoubtedly instances of attacks on all groups by all other groups. However you support a political party that makes particular groups in this country vulnerable to attack. MMH on the other hand does not, as far as I know, support any organisation that threatens any group at all.

So answer her question ... Or are you 'too tired' again?? If so have a go at mine:

What is it about us and our children that you hate/fear/object to?

It is a genuine question. I really would like to know.

monkeysmama · 23/10/2009 00:30

Lolopops I'm with you. Want to copy & paste my first post tonight but am writing from phone in bed & can't so hey ho.

hairymelons · 23/10/2009 00:30

yeah, just in from work. As long as he doesn't wake between now and 4am that's 3 1/2 lovely hours of sleep. Mmm.
So, a total not-right then. Dirty looks from a toddler, right you are.
There are always going to be some randoms with extreme views I suppose, and the fact that the BNP have 2 elected MEPs terrifies me but.. I really don't think that NG has gained any support tonight.
Maybe I'm being naive but I just don't think he represents the views of most people. Even if you were on the fence about it, that performance can't have done him any favours.

MonstrousMerryHenry · 23/10/2009 00:31

franch - you're right about me - unless the LibDems and Greens have become violent killing machines since the last election.

Anyway I think you'll find the answer to that question is 'your skin colour'. Oh, and, that's probably about it.

carriedababi · 23/10/2009 00:34

er, why didn;t they question him on the bnp sexist views and bnps views on rape ?

[angry}

carriedababi · 23/10/2009 00:35

i thought Baroness Warsi was amazing.

MonstrousMerryHenry · 23/10/2009 00:37

(Bed? Ha! Who am I kidding?)

hairy - oh, I really feel for you and hope it works out with the sleep!

I imagine NG's performance hasn't changed a thing with the voters, tbh. But it's good that he's been on the air and shown up for what he is (though he is actually far worse than he came across). Good thing having the news reports ahead of QT as well, with those racist quotations of his.

I am SO pleased that QT mentioned his KKK speech, it's one of those things that lots of web users will have seen but many typical QT viewers won't have.

hairymelons · 23/10/2009 00:37

Obviously the BNP won't be upset about a trouncing from BG but I just meant that she made some good, sensible arguments against BNP policies. Sense dictates that NG is full of (racist) shit, it was nice that someone calmly pointed this out.
Yes, he is odious, but starting off every response to him with a slagging wasn't going to turn anyone against him. I thought maybe a bit of truth and common sense might.
Am off to bed, night all

GrimmaTheNome · 23/10/2009 00:37

Because in an hour they couldn't cover all the BNPs repugnant policies, I would imagine.

Maybe R4 should have him on Woman's Hour. That could be as good as a paxoing. Though of course he does come over so well on TV in the (sweaty) flesh

lollopops · 23/10/2009 00:37

A racist attack should be just that. When a black/asian/chinese person is attacked, it is seen as racist. It's only been recently that when a white person is attacked, it has been seen as racist. Everyone should be treated equally, the thing is, some groups of people have a more 'equal' setting than others. Hence, why we have Race laws in place (and rightly so).

A lot of people are barking up the wrong tree and make out that it's the MINORITIES who, for example, object to nursery rhymes (oh purleease) when in fact it's a lie peddled by the media to cause resentment and it's MINORITIES who object to the English flag being flown. It causes resentment.

I object to ANYONE being treated unfairly, Not just minorities (people like me). Sorry for the caps, I've had a long day..

night.
