our after school club costs £6 a day, a lot cheaper than a childminder

(and low income families are subsidised)

But do you get guitar lessons in that price?!

no but there are Advanced Scoubidou Technologists on hand, much to dd1's delight

And what's the definition of low income?

Everybody always says low income families are subsidise, but ime that simply isn't true. You are only subsidised if you are claiming income support. And you stop being eligible to claim income support between about £8-9K. (I know this because when I was offered my job at £8K, I was eligible for IS, but when they extended my hours and gave me £9K, I was no longer eligible.) So somewhere around a really low level, you cease to be regarded by most organisations (theatres, sports centres, school dinners, council tax, etc. etc.) as "low income" and you pay full whack for everything, just as if you earned £40K. Now it may be that these wonderful new afterschool clubs may be more sophisticated than that in pricing policies (taking account of tax credits, for example) but I won't hold my breath.

What's a scoubidou technologist? (What is this scoubidou of which everyone speaks?)

Thin strips of plastic that you tie or plait together. Why, I don't know.

Reminds me of the french knitting craze of yesteryear.
