Banning smoking outdoors?

MrsMerryHenry · 03/10/2009 00:39

Did anyone else hear about this on R4 (PM programme) this evening? I can't find an article about it anywhere. Is this a serious proposal?

It does make me when smokers complain about infringement of civil liberties over this issue. I don't believe I have ever heard a smoker talk about non-smokers' civil liberties being infringed every time someone lights up. And non-smokers have been putting up with second-hand smoke for about as long as humans have walked the earth. So although a very small part of me feels a wee bit sorry for smokers, that they're being pushed into a corner, the rest of me goes "ROFLROFLROFL it's about time."

abouteve - I am not spoiling for a fight; you don't know me well enough to make that presumption. Actually I was catching up on the thread. I wrote a direct response to your post that was directly aimed at me. Since then I'm glad to see that you've mellowed. Also I'm amazed that you indirectly call me unreasonable, seeing as I'm one of the few anti-smoking bods on here who has refused to make personal insults against smokers. And in fact, I was about to say hear hear loli about the aggression against smokers.

Finally, this argument about cars vs cigarettes - bit silly, really, isn't it? Cars are a necessary evil. Cigarettes aren't.

Love the way people come on here and state that twopence worth without bothering to read thread. So, again:
Yes cars pollute. But they also serve a useful purpose. And two wrongs don't make a right.
Cow manure does not give you cancer.

southeastastra · 03/10/2009 21:48

i really do not believe that people encounter so much cigarette smoke these days

MrsMerryHenry · 03/10/2009 21:48

I don't think the Asian countries take the same view of spirits, Squiglet. Also the spirit thing should not be over-simplified - in general Africans are pretty conservative and shun people who veer too far from the average norms of behaviour. Having said that, I've not studied anything about how mental illness is treated across Africa, but I know that in many parts of Nigeria (where my family is from) it's regarded as an affliction.

If you rent a home from our local estate, you apparently can't smoke in your own home.I had heard that new tenants aren't allowed dogs in the houses or to smoke indoors.I wonder if this will become more common in rented houses in future?

MrsMerryHenry · 03/10/2009 21:55

I've always wondered what's the issue about dogs in rental homes? Is is just about toilet training, because if that's the case they should ban toddlers as well.

Whispers, I didn't mention car fumes.

Not sure how the discussion about mental illness relates to smoking though I note your comments about it not being relevant to the thread.

IME smoking, or perhaps nicotine, not sure which one can keep you calm. It's an artificial calm that is reliant on the smoke.

When I've given up the physical withdrawal only lasts about 3 days and can be managed as I have done successfully numerous times. It's the mental withdrawal which is hard to get over. After a week or so I just explode with rage. It's awful as had I still been smoking I would have lit a cig and calmed down.

It does go away but takes approx 6 weeks so that's why it's so difficult to quit.

Remotew · 03/10/2009 22:03

Good point furiousgeorge as prisons or other places of residence, e.g residential homes, hotel rooms are exempt from the smoking ban so technically landlords shouldn't be insisting on no smoking in their residential properties but they do.

MrsMerryHenry · 03/10/2009 22:03

I wasn't aiming the car thing at you, eve, in case you thought I was!

I read something the other day that said that self-belief is everything in giving up smoking - except that it works the other way round. People who think they have the willpower to give up apparently are less successful in the end than people who have little belief in themselves. Isn't that rough blardy justice? It was in the New Scientist, so it must be true!

OP posts:
MrsMerryHenry · 03/10/2009 22:04

I don't think it's unreasonable to insist on no smoking in rental properties - if anything it keeps down the tenants' costs as the smell will have to be cleaned out after they've vacated the property.

OP posts:
Remotew · 03/10/2009 22:12

Yes I knew it wasn't aimed at me.

I can understand why landlords don't want tennants to smoke in their properties but if there was a ban on smoking outside, which probably won't happen, then that might be shaky ground as part of the exemption for residence, just a thought.

disneystar1 · 03/10/2009 22:20

if people choose to smoke then do it in your own homes, if they argue the fact they dont want to stink there own houses out or maybe they feel guilty for smoking in front of the dc,s then stop.
its rude when they walk along smoking with the dangerous fire stick usually at kid height level,

thoughtless especially in eating areas (eg alton towers have special areas ) they dont listen just walk around fag in hand.

on a rainy day at our local tesco all the people congregate smoking away till the rain dies down its thoughtless as people are there with there kids.

rant over

ban smoking outside full stop, inside there home is there choice
outside we can be affected and this isnt fair imo.

pofacedandproud · 03/10/2009 22:20

believe what you like sea. If you have actually read the thread and still believe that, well, I disagree.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 03/10/2009 22:57

It always makes me when I see people pick up a pack of cigs with warning signs all over them, and still light up.

I will never get why people smoke and I for one would ban it outright.

But if people feel they really must then let them do it in thier own homes.

alwayslookingforanswers · 03/10/2009 23:00

I think the smoking/mental illnesss came up because someone mentioned earlier on about psychiatric patients smoking on NHS grounds

Ivykaty44 · 03/10/2009 23:25

I really dont see that banning smoking in peoples own gardens or a non public area outside would be correct - but to make public areas a smoke free zone would be great e.g. parks with swings and slides pavements.

designated areas where people can have a ciggarte away from others would be far better as it keeps people happy on both sides.

Remotew · 03/10/2009 23:33

Ivykate but it wouldn't keep them happy would it? They won't be happy until it's banned from everywhere outside.

LolaAnn · 03/10/2009 23:57

I have to say, having just moved to London it is truly horrific the amount of second hand smoke I inhale and it truly does worry me the effect it has on my health and that of my unborn child. When I walk around London my snot is black for the next day. DISGUSTING. I can't understand why I should have to suffer for other peoples disgusting bad choices.

TheCrackFox · 04/10/2009 00:03

The black snot thing is from everyday pollution. When I worked in London (15 years ago) I had the same problem. I have never had this anywhere else - weird.

Armi · 04/10/2009 00:04

Settles in chair, places feet on desk, lights fag and blows smoke all over thread, precipitating the exit of sanctimonious pain-in-the-arse non-smokers Look, you lot drew the line. You've got the work places, pubs, theatres, cinemas, station platforms...literally thousands of places to go to escape the smoke. So go there.

The outside belongs to us now.

TeeteringOnTheEdge · 04/10/2009 00:09

I am blowing fag smoke onto my screen RUN WOMEN RUNNN!!!!

evansmummy · 04/10/2009 00:44

Armi, I heart your post.

cheeseandeyeballsarnie · 04/10/2009 00:50
