Bigger thighs have a lower risk of premature death and heart disease

Apparently the optimum circumference for your thigh is 60cm. I've just tried to measure mine with a ruler, I think they're 38cm around. I have a greatly increased risk of premature death .

You mean there might be some benefit to big thighs! You've made my morning.

WorzselMummage · 04/09/2009 09:27

I'm saved !

Portofino · 04/09/2009 09:27

Thank the lord!

MrsBadger · 04/09/2009 09:30

I thought this was only compared to 'bigger stomachs'
ie same deal as the old chestnut that pear-shapes are healthier than apples.

Lizzylou · 04/09/2009 09:31

Yee Ha!

TigersChick · 04/09/2009 09:32

I giggled with glee when I heard this on the news earlier

Here is the story which, sadly, says that tho the risk increases the further below 60cm you go, there is no added benefit the higher above it you go ... Ah well

watfordmummy · 04/09/2009 09:32

If they just say that fat ankles and calves are the healthiest I will be the happiest!!!

weegiemum · 04/09/2009 09:33

Praise be!

at Bettymum - measuring round your thighs with e ruler!!

flowerybeanbag · 04/09/2009 09:33

Clearly it can't be a direct beneficial effect of the thighs themselves. Surely it's just that people with bigger thighs are less likely to have big stomachs, being pear-shaped, and people with big stomachs are more at risk of heart disease. So nothing new then...

TigersChick · 04/09/2009 09:37

According to the quotes in that article it's to do with muscle mass and is unrelated to waist size.
Other agencies are saying that it needs corroborating ...

Bettymum · 04/09/2009 09:40

I'm at work weegiemum, trying to measure them under the desk!

I see. Well does that mean we need big muscly thighs then, rather than fat thighs....

I would have thought someone who is slim (including their thighs) through doing lots of exercise has more muscle mass in their thin thighs than an overweight person with flabby thighs.

TigerFeet · 04/09/2009 09:43

Hurrah! At last a reason to be happy to have a fat arse and cankles

I've always carried my weight around my hips, I've heard before that a pear shapes are less likely to suffer from heart disease than apples as the fat is stored away from the major abdominal muscles.

TigerFeet · 04/09/2009 09:44

major abdominal organs [doh]

AMumInScotland · 04/09/2009 09:47

I measured mine this morning - 60.5 cm Yay I'm going to live forever!

TigersChick · 04/09/2009 09:50

FloweryBB - yes, I think you're right, it's to do with muscle not just size ... but there is a comment about having more fat being good, something about processing food ...

Ooh yes I def want to believe this latest bit of research.

There have to be some compensations for having a 'difficult' relationship with jeans and trousers

PeedOffWithNits · 04/09/2009 13:52

62cm here including my jeans!

theDMsaSHAMazade · 04/09/2009 18:20

not even going to bother measuring mine. dh calls them toothpicks. i'm devastated..

TsarChasm · 04/09/2009 18:22

I'd still love toothpick thighs really. I bet you can slip into any skinny jeans that you want. God I'm envious!

theDMsaSHAMazade · 04/09/2009 18:23

i have NEVER EVER liked my thighs,.. i don't think skinny bony thighs are sexy , womanly or attractive in the slightest!

WetAugust · 05/09/2009 00:52

22" - I'm gonna die young and leave a good-looking corpse

verygreenlawn · 05/09/2009 09:17

LOL at this. Mine are 58cms at the widest point, but then they're quite muscular - I've always had "footballer" legs!

brettgirl2 · 05/09/2009 09:32

61cm . Despite the trouser problem I actually quite like my thunder thighs. I blame horse riding personally.

Skinny leg jeans hahahahaha!!!!

sockmonkey · 05/09/2009 09:53

Woot! 60cm here.
