Thread no 2

OP posts:
ilovemydogandmrobama · 14/08/2009 18:04

Well, if Mumsnet is like a pub landlord as far as libel, being responsible for the conversation that takes place, then copyright would be like recording those conversations after closing time, transcribing them, and publishing.

ComeOVeneer · 14/08/2009 18:05

Incidental inclusion is when something is included in a publication by accident eg background music and something in the background of a photograph. You can't accidentally add written words into a piece of text!!!

Winehouse · 14/08/2009 18:07

It occurred to me that everyone (except many of the posters here) might assume it was good publicity all round and not expect such a fuss. Maybe it will all die down soon, things on this site seem to flare up quite badly before reason sets in.

BitOfFun · 14/08/2009 18:07

Justine, when you linked to the new terms and conditions, I'm afraid I got distracted by that lemon drizzle cake recipe...damn you and your pesky portal to sin!!

Perhaps there should be a tick box at the end of the message reply box.

'Please indicate if you are happy for this post to be quoted in the DM'

[facetious]

flashharriet · 14/08/2009 18:09

Thanks for your responses Justine and sorry that you've had to deal with all this while MNHQ is running on a skeleton holiday staff (wasn't it this time of year when SWMNBN kicked off??)

This has made me think long and hard about how I use MN - I regularly namechange and am very cautious about giving any personal details. I don't worry about being stalked or people being able to piece together my ID. However, it's made me realise with a jolt that there's a lot I've written that I would hate some people close to me to read at another time, especially my children to read in the future (there's a thought ), so I'm wondering whether there is now a need for a MN spin-off site which is subscription only and private? I realise this is dangerously near to Moldie territory, but tbh I'd rather give my ££ to MNHQ and be able to post in a smaller, safer, closed environment than have to seek that kind of site elsewhere.

It seems to me that MN is now so huge (and likely to become even bigger with a regular feature in the DM) that a relatively small number of posters subscribing to another site would be a drop in the ocean (and might even help with financing the main site...?)

wotzy · 14/08/2009 18:09

If my message was deleted because I mentioned the jurnos name, then it's all over the first thread anyway and some more regular posted mentioned it. So remove them too.

If it was removed as I said I the person was a lazy '**' for using quotes lifted from MN to make a few quid from the DM, then sorry for that. But hey- only my opinion.

If it was removed for some other reason, liek bad tpying or gramaaaarrr then.... I'll try hrdaer.

up your flaps potface, I am only trying to help!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/08/2009 18:14

Arf

Actually we could have several tick boxes, DM, Guardian, Times, Local Rag.

LIZS · 14/08/2009 18:14

I wonder if it is possible for MNHQ to review how many newbies have signed up in the wake of this "publicity" and thereby whether there is any associated incremental benefit to MN.

They must have some way of monitoring traffic and registrations.

So did we see a spike in visits/new members yesterday? Should be quite easy to spot the effect of a newspaper article, tomorrow's chip wrapper and all that.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 18:25

I don't think anyone's made a subscription model work financially on the web yet - but I could be wrong? Too many folks are used to getting things for free but maybe that will change in due course. We also don't want to exclude people who can't afford to pay.

But... we will crack the whip wrt private groups which should help.

fuckingbella21 · 14/08/2009 18:26

Expecting us to believe this all happened without MN's knowledge is adding insult to injury, frankly.

How thick do you think we are?

You knew. You got paid. At least be honest.

And have the class to sell it to something better than the DM, ffs.

Will go and de-reg for the last time now.

Bye Blondie.
Bye KC.
Bye Shiney.
Bye all you nice MNers.

Up yours, MNHQ.

wotzy · 14/08/2009 18:26

lazy fecker

Longtalljosie · 14/08/2009 18:27

Maybe you could have a "Mumsnet Plus"?

Online gamers pay subscriptions - and the correlation between husband on world of warcraft - wife on Mumsnet has oft been remarked upon.

Not that that happens every evening ever in my house. Oh, no...

Greensleeves · 14/08/2009 18:27

I think it would be a bit sad to introduce a subscription

there is something delightful about the free-and-open nature of the community - subscription would alter the feel of things, IMO

Greensleeves · 14/08/2009 18:28

bella you are embarrassing yourself

go and have a nice cup of tea and take some deep breaths

wotzy · 14/08/2009 18:28

no you

ClaireDeLoon · 14/08/2009 18:29

Come on now, if Justine has said they didn't get paid we should believe her - why on earth would she lie?

wotzy · 14/08/2009 18:29

no you
meant not you!

I think you just need to decide that you are content to have every word/post (that doesn't get removed) subject to MN use and further use by any blog, FB or twitter user.

Or possibly swear in each post and they won't be able to publish the full content. Just a thought.
