Well that is just it, people are outing her because of what she has revealed in the past and she is not sucking it up!

If you choose to do something that will upset people then it is a bit naive to think they will not get upset and part of that is expecting people to repeat things you have said in the past - like it or not it is going to happen!

I agree SN is different, it was an extreme example to make a point. We post something here and it becomes part of the things others know about you - the same as it would IRL, if you reveal your great love of banana pudding to your BF and she decides to use that information when talking about TTC that is up to her - you get to chose if you continue to be her friend but you cannot take it back! THe same is true on MN I am afraid!

In the Mn of the future- as I see it, there are no reassurances that any of your posts will be respected and not given to/taken by any agent sn used for their own ends.

It's chicken feed talking about stuff follwoing you round from one board to another.... this will be in any magazine or newspaper you cna think of that may think they have soemthing to say.

Alohoa/LH is the tip of an iceberg
MN feel they have a relationship with her and hope that the DM won't request her to raid SN boards- and maybe she'll be put in a very difficult position of they do...
but there is really nothing to stop that.

i, for one actually feel sorry for her- she's now in a horrible palce, which, being humna like the rest of us- didn't occur to her at the time of writing the article.

AitchTwoOh · 15/08/2009 10:41

stripey, i don't think anyone has outed her current posting name. that would be massively off i reckon.

two things about the old posting name.

  1. you're saying that she might have posted at sensitive times and not want those posts raked up. well... ahem. is that not what she did to TD and the OP of the sacked and pregnant thread?
  1. her privacy is being invaded if people look up her old threads, i'd agree. but aren't the naysayers on the dm privacy issue scoffing that people don't really do that sort of thing and that people on here are being paranoid? so, which is it?

i don't understand why she doesn't just sign on under a new name and explain what's gone on and what she thought would happen. she knows that's what MNHQ do in these situations and she knows that it's the best way to calm a situation.

if she made a mistake, fair enough. if she really needs the money, fair enough. if she didn't think it would cause any upset, well, she could try to convince people of that too...

i quite like the DM, for its sins, and i read it every day, at least the wifies' section. it's an awesome paper. (and not necessarily in a good way, i grant you).

but lifting stuff without asking is not well-mannered, and i'd kinda like to know what happened there.

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 15/08/2009 10:45

Stripey, it depends on what you are talking about - I agree that there is an intolerance where it is derisive, unhelpful or aimed at hurting/upsetting someone but there is no such feeling about people discussing general information about each other.

Oops, I wish you hadn't done that - your post is a good one and it will be deleted now! Please copy it quick!

I agree though, I suspect this is where we are going, like it or not, MN being used as anyone sees fit - I agree that advertisers can use us if DM can and if HQ do not put a stop to it now it will be out of control in no time.

It does not look good does it?

oopsagainandagain · 15/08/2009 10:53

which post?
i've made loads of good ones

Nancy66 · 15/08/2009 10:54

No, she didn't do that to the poster of the sacked and pregnant thread at all Aitch. Entirely different.

oopsagainandagain · 15/08/2009 10:55

What's the point in attacking the journislt here just now- the issue is massively bigger...

AitchTwoOh · 15/08/2009 10:59

in what way? if her boss reads it, if any of her friends or family read it, then they'll recognise the story. then any of them can do a search and find out lots of detail about her personal life. or more accurately (thanks to lh's innaccuracy) td's personal life.

i think that it happens more than you're giving credit for, btw. someone told me the other day that their 70 year old mother did a search to see what she'd been saying when she found out her dd's posting name. i wouldn't put it past my own mother and family. just general nosiness, nothing malicious, but it's an uncomfortable infringement and one that being publicised in a paper with a 1.5mill daily reach encourages.

oopsagainandagain · 15/08/2009 10:59

I'm off now to live mt life-
I note MNHQ are missing just now.
I'll be back after the weekend,
But my request still stands and I suggest you all think long and hard about what all this means to the site's integrity and how safe you fele in the future and what you ahve posted in the past...

AitchTwoOh · 15/08/2009 11:00

i'm not attacking lh, i resent the implication tbh.

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 15/08/2009 11:01

Of course you have oops, I meant the one where you name LH and her previous posting name.

I don't think who the journo is makes the slightest bit of difference, it is a journo doing something I (for one) am not happy with and I suspect there is worse to come. Who is doing the telling is immaterial - except in a wounded friends/molidegate kind of way and I have to confess to being surprised and dissapointed that this journo has done this - as I am one of the people who knew her years ago - but that is a complete side issue an not relevant to the actual problem IYSWIM.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 15/08/2009 11:01

I guess MNHQ have kind of created a monster, haven't they. MN has got so big that journos started looking to it as the main Internet voice for 'comment' on parenting issues. For free, and eloquently phrased of course!

So this is just really the next logical step. Fair play to LH, at least the quotes were accurate (if misattributed) and presented in their own right and not to serve an agenda.

But what if - that phrase again! ...do you remember their coverage of that poor woman who killed herself a couple of weeks ago? What if they decide to run a working-mums-can't-cope article, and lift quotes from "mental health"? Are we really saying we can't stop them laying bare our darkest moments for the entertainment of the nation?

Nancy66 · 15/08/2009 11:02

Well, as i said before I do not agree that anybody would read that story about the sacked pregant womoan and think 'oh that sounds like so and so' - it had no real name, no location, no occupation, no age.

What's the grandmother story got to do with a column in the DM?

BadgersArse · 15/08/2009 11:02

why is everyone so cross about it?
i love it when my wisdom gets to mainstram press

adn you all so do too you liars

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 15/08/2009 11:02

for the entertainment of the nation.... and to serve a 'get thee back in the kitchen' agenda of course

LilyOfTheMountain · 15/08/2009 11:03

'and I don't believe they knew it would fall out like this'

Actually I doubt that, everything falls out on here- bed names in catalogues, formula advertising, whatever. I hope they didn't know bt once they saw it they were well aware what would happen I am sure.

MIL would recognise me; everything worth posting about in my life is because it is so fucking odd at times, absolutely.

MN has always been vulnerable to passing journ types and lobbyists, I think in real terms a great many of us are lobbyists for our beleifs in our own way- always been one of the attractions of MN tbh, the opinionated people you get to 'meet'. However I still think there is a amrked difference between knowing that someone might just pop by occasionally when it is a slow news weeks and they need a quote and knowing that someone will be selecting a column weekly for a paper whose editorial opinions seems to directly contradict everything you hold to be good and decent.

'Yes I agree with aitch. Personally I would feel less sullied writing for the DM than I would working for an international pharmaceutical company (I really couldn't do that - despite having roughly the right sort of qualifications). ' interesting, knowing your background sorry about namechange- you know me though- with my background my rl name in the dm would categorically Not Be A Good Thing- I can name (well I can't in case it gets printed natch) at least one route that would be barred to me as a result.
Through bigotry perhaps, but a high cost nonetheless.

AitchTwoOh · 15/08/2009 11:04

i bet they won't lift from teh Daisy Goodwin chat.

BadgersArse · 15/08/2009 11:04

i am only cross there is no badger action on there

leah
see to it

or a fish related one

oopsagainandagain · 15/08/2009 11:04

I didn't say you were, aitch, nope, your post is very eben handed, as ever!

I was just trying to say that the problem is bigger than the journalist in question and it seemed to me that we need to look at the biger picture...

I'm fending off two small kids and a cross Dh too- so maybe I was 2-3 posts out in my response.

right i NEED to leave , like now!!
Or it'll be a divorce...
