I'm convinced now that Boris does this on purpose - like a troll on here. It may be what he thinks or it may not.

OTOH, I bet he mixes with a lot of company CEOs etc that do earn amounts that make him look a pauper.

My opinion is that incomes can vary according to how hard you work etc, but morally only up to say 5 times the lowest paid. There is no way that someone can be worth 1000s of times more than a train driver, a teacher or a dustman.

Ah, but Ken also maintained a newspaper column with the Indy for quite a while after he landed the Mayoralty, though I don't think they were paying anything like Johnson's fee. Bozza did also state early on that £50k of his £250k would go to fund bursaries of some description. Still, I certainly wouldn't mind that kind of 'chickenfeed'. Curious choice of description.

Just read a bit more on it - he was doing a BBC radio interview when he said it. Claimed he was being 'frivolous'.

Fine to have that kind of "sense of humour" if you're a columnist (perhaps) - maybe he and India "upset the liberals" should do a joint "let's offend everyone" column together one day, but I do feel glum about the fact he's our mayor ... .

Boris "Not really, compared to Jeremy Paxman's £600 000 it's chicken feed".....

I don't think he was comparing his meagre earnings to Paxman's, just being his usual cossetted, pampered self - out of touch with real life, raised and educated in an elite system to rub shoulders with other members of the elite.

Why on earth he was ever elected as Mayor of London is beyond me - I suppose it comes down to the fact that he has friends in the media who were able to re-package him as a "loveable buffoon with a good heart".

I find it bizzarre, bizzarre, bizzarre that he was packaged as a "loveable buffoon" ie that was supposed to be his good point, his selling point.

And he won!!!! The loveable buffoon is mayor of London.

Thing is - we surely, surely expect the mayor of London to have a bit more sense than to make such a f* stupid joke.

HE IS NOT A COMEDIAN - HE IS A POLITICIAN - AND REPRESENTS LONDONERS - who mostly earn way less than that and, as Lulumaman says, are dealing with a recession.

And I'm sure Conservative head office are not pleased, as they try and paint themselves as caring and concerned as the election draws slowly towards us.

HumphreyCobbler, I'm a Londoner & I can't honestly recall him being a topic of conversation at all over the last year amongst any other Londoners I know or have met. I don't know that people really think much about the very existence of the Mayor, beyond the media, message boards & groups wanting funding. I rather think London would get on quite well without a Mayor at all...
