Mumsnet biscuit discussion quoted in 'Time'

Actually it is banging on about our hundreds of swine flu parties:

"Parents in Britain have long held "chicken pox parties" at the beginning of summer so that children can catch the disease at a convenient time."

"The British press has reported that discussions about Swine Flu parties first began in earnest on the website mumsnet.com, a web portal for decidedly middle class British mothers (one of the most active forums this week: "Crucial biscuit question - which are posher: Rich Teas or Custard creams?)"

That's so funny!

AitchTwoOh · 03/07/2009 18:35

lolol. gosh it makes me so PROUD.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 03/07/2009 18:52

brilliant.

i love being a middle class nutcase.

hurrah.

JackBauer · 03/07/2009 19:47

Oh it will bring out all the nutters who register to have a go at us for 'putting our children in danger' and 'not having a link with reality' or something and then say 'I will never come on MN' but they just did

(I get 10 points for the first person to accuse us of those BTW)

Pingpong · 03/07/2009 19:54

elfonthetopshelf
tunnocks are not chocolate bars!
You get tunnock teacakes, tunnocks caramel logs, and tunnocks caramel wafers all sold in the chocolate biscuit aisle.
All are superior to Rich Tea or custard creams as they have chocolate

nevergoogledragonbutter · 04/07/2009 09:30

I think shortbread is the poshest.
It has an element of elegance and sophistication.
Kind of timeless.

MaryBS · 04/07/2009 09:37

I think perhaps our next discussion should be about which newspaper we should be reading, see where that leads...

thumbwitch · 04/07/2009 09:40

lol MaryBS - can you imagine?

I love Tunnnocks teacakes and caramel wafers - don't remember whether or not I've had the caramel logs but the other 2 were standard fare at my grandparents' home in Sheffield. My Dad still gets Tunnock's caramel wafers now, despite living in SE London - but not sure if he buys them locally or buys them in Lincoln when he's visiting rellies.

EachPeachPearMum · 04/07/2009 09:50

Maybe we could have mners guest edit the Times? (a la guardian several years ago)
Can you .....?

MildredRoper · 04/07/2009 10:06

The House of Lords have debated the issue of tea cakes (really) and it appears they think they are actually cakes, not biscuits! link

geordieminx I went to school in the Tunnocks village. Is there still a Tunnocks shop?

thumbwitch · 04/07/2009 10:08

Mildred, didn't they do that with Jaffa Cakes as well? although I can't remember the outcome (or maybe that discussion was in Europe)

FrannyandZooey · 04/07/2009 10:08

gawd this is beyond ludicrous
justine i am going to let my children catch swine flu on purpose, then sue you when it goes wrong, for telling me to do it

geordieminx · 04/07/2009 10:31

Mildred There is indeed a Tunnocks shop... its just up the way from Subway - bet you are

The smell that wafts from the factory on a warm day is amazing!!

MildredRoper · 04/07/2009 10:38

I'm glad about that! I still regularly eat Tunnocks, obviously.

Those bloody Subway places are taking over the world though.

geordieminx · 04/07/2009 11:06

It even has a charity shop now

Pennies · 04/07/2009 11:12

OOh - can't find the great biscuit debate.

Can I have a link please because it sounds way more interesting than bleedin' swine flu.

thumbwitch · 04/07/2009 11:19

here you are pennies

duchesse · 04/07/2009 11:34

Shurely we should all be sitting around at Swine flu parties infecting our children whilst chomping on chocolate Bath Olivers? You don't much more rarified that chocolate bath olivers... You can barely even buy them anywhere.

oftenpurple · 04/07/2009 11:46

Well, I have the flu (but not confirmed as the swine variety) so why don't you all just bring your biscuits round here??? We can have a proper debate about it AND you can get the flu!

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 04/07/2009 15:17

But Smac the definition of a biscuit is whether you'll dunk it in your coffee or tea. I wouldn't dunk a Tunnocks in my hot drink! The tunnocks with a wafer - thats a chocolate bar. The tea cake tunnocks is a cake.
You can get Jaffa cakes down the biscuit aisle too, but I dont consider it a biscuit.

(DH peeing himself laughing that I'm even writing this!)

thumbwitch · 04/07/2009 15:23

jaffa cakes are cakes - officially
I knew I had read something about this ongoing battle - seems to have been resolved now.

In other countries they put something in the base to stop it going crispy, so that it always maintains a cake-like texture - they tried it here and people complained. The only foodstuff that people prefer slightly stale!

LupusinaLlamasuit · 04/07/2009 19:22

Yes cakes go hard when they go stale, but biscuits go soft. It's Official.

littleducks · 04/07/2009 19:34

Now i knew the minute the bisuit thread got sticky status that there was some kind of a wager going on at MNHQ to see if you couldget it in the press

Mintyy · 04/07/2009 19:40

Look, I never do this, but I haven't read the whole thread (am in hurry)

So PLEASE can someone tell me:

Mumsnet quoted in the press (again).

Thread quoted was about biscuits.

But said biscuit thread was started by MNHQ and was a sticky at top of active convos for a day or two.

What was the reasoning behind that then? How does that work?

Very grateful for enlightenment and apologies if I've missed the explanation but would love to be pointed towards it.

CheeseCheese · 04/07/2009 19:41

no one knows why mnhq were asking abotu biscuits
although i have an idea.

it was on board at same time as swinflu
was coincidental

you are overthinking htis
