Should Madonna be allowed to adopt another Malawian child?

This little girl has a father who is trying to stop the adoption, and Madonna has launched an appeal in Malawi.

Is there something a bit weird about her motives perhaps? I commend her for wanting to help people in Africa - but couldn't she help by something a bit more constructive. Paying for a fresh water well in a rural village for example!

Taking children away from their country and culture strikes me as misguided, and about 200 years out of date. What do other people think?

Honestly ?

I couldn't give a flying eyepoke how many kids Madonna adopts or gives birth to.

knickers0nmahead · 04/05/2009 19:14

no she shouldnt! all these kids in this country that need adopting! why does she want to adopt someone from there when there are hundreds of children here that need a home.

namebacon · 04/05/2009 19:21

The reason that she wants to take a child home with her as opposed to just financially supporting the child or the orphanage is that she gets to have a cute baby, the orphanage gets money and the baby gets to have a better life. I don't know what the problem is really. Everyone wins.

FabulousBakerGirl · 04/05/2009 19:22

No way but I expect she will get her own way.

onagar · 04/05/2009 19:23

Well the father has never met the child, but now wants to claim custody. I can't help but view that cynically.

I don't have direct experience of adopting in this country, but I'm told it's quite difficult nowadays as though they'd rather keep them in homes. I don't know how widespread this is, but I'm told you have to fit an exact profile including the right color and culture.

ScummyMummy · 04/05/2009 19:30

Not sure what I think about it. But sounds like the "father" is deeply suspect. This is the apparently the first time he's taken any sort of interest in the child and the rest of the family claim never to have seen him before.

Nancy66 · 04/05/2009 19:33

I don't think Madonna should be allowed to adopt from Malawi for the simple reason that she would never be allowed to adopt here.

poopscoop · 04/05/2009 19:34

I don't see why she shouldnt adopt another baby. We don't even know the woman to judge whether she should or should not. Only by the crap we read in the paper.

onagar · 04/05/2009 19:34

Nancy, I don't understand that reason. Do you mean because she is not a UK citizen?

Nancy66 · 04/05/2009 19:42

Onagar - no, I meant she would not be considered suitable.

onagar · 04/05/2009 19:55

Oh right. I'm with you now.

I'm not sure a celeb life style is ideal myself, but a children's home can be much worse. In this country I mean. I have no idea what it's like there.

Greensneeze · 04/05/2009 19:57

No, I don't think she should be allowed to adopt any more children.

FairyMum · 05/05/2009 22:30

Yes.

Mulanmum1 · 06/05/2009 17:44

Yes, she should be allowed to become a mother to Mercy,

Ponders · 06/05/2009 18:33

I think it would be nice for the little boy to have an adopted sister from the same country.

cocolepew · 06/05/2009 18:40

The childs' uncles are saying this isn't the father.

And no she shouldn't, but she'll keep stamping her feet until she gets her own way because she's special

spicemonster · 06/05/2009 18:44

I think she should have to go through the same adoption process as everyone. And not bypass it because she's a sleb.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 07/05/2009 12:03

I think that when you are just coming out of a divorce it's never right to try adopting another child, whether you are famous or not. She wouldn't get through the adoption assessment for a UK baby, so what makes an african baby any less deserving of a fit parent/s? I know that Mercy is coming from a different, and arguably (though arguably not) situation than UK kids in care, but surely she still deserves an adoption that will be good for her, and have the best chance of not breaking down? And adoption by a woman with emotional fragility due to a recent relationship breakdown is not giving her the best chance of a permanent home, IMO.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 07/05/2009 12:05

arguably worse situation

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 07/05/2009 12:06

Just made me wonder - I wonder how many sleb adoptions break down? I bet there are plenty - but we never hear about them.

ArcticLemming · 07/05/2009 12:28

She doesn't fulfil the legal requirements to adopt in Malawi (e.g. resident for at least a year), so no she shouldn't.

Ponders · 07/05/2009 12:47

But she didn't last time either, & she was allowed to adopt then - I think the present situation of that child should be taken into consideration now.

Ponders · 07/05/2009 12:48

(by "that child" I mean the boy she adopted before)

TwoIfBySea · 07/05/2009 14:46

The kid is going to be raised by an army of nannies anyway. I suppose it depends on whether or not you would agree that money equals happiness.

Celebs should be made to follow the same rules as mere mortals and that is it. Madonna seems a bit control freaky though, bet she is scary in an argument!

My DD (aged 4) was adopted from China. We became a family - beats "culture" any day. 200 years out of date? No, children still need to be raised by a loving family.
