here. I always quite liked his history programmes, especially about the Tudors.
I notice the Welsh and Irish aren't showing national outrage at this.

OP posts:
MrsMattie · 25/04/2009 17:05

The Irish are too busy planning St Patricks Day 2010 (woo hooooo!) to bother getting upset about some oul' fella prattling away on the telly.

I'm English and even I cannot be arsed with St George's Day.

  • it's so forced. I noticed Eastenders tried to weave it into their storyline last night. Lame. In RL, nobody I know was down the pub waving their George Cross flag and saying Happy St George's Day.

As for Scotland being feeble? No way. The Scots are rock 'ard . Never have been a Burns fan, though.

AlistairSim · 25/04/2009 17:13

I have to agree with him about Burns.

And I am still slightly mentally scarred by the fact that not all Scottish men wear kilts.
I remember the disapointment from my first visit, mind you, I was only 6.

pointydog · 25/04/2009 17:18

I've never liked Starkey.

He's just trying to be controversial i nhis own pompous little way. Fair enough. Not bovvered

nametaken · 25/04/2009 22:37

A very clever man, Starkey, and I enjoy listening to him, even if he is controversial.

So what if he offended the welsh, scottish and irish. It's called having an opinion. Or have we become so PC these days that no-one is allowed to say anything derogatory about anyone ever, only bland boring mundane comments.

I agree too. It's an opinion.

TwoIfBySea · 25/04/2009 23:39

Saltire, it wasn't the first time he has done that on QT and he is not alone in bashing us Scots. It seems to be flavour of the month down South to do so, we even get blamed for the credit crunch.

Oh hell, Brown is from Kirkcaldy - can he get minus points for being a Fifer anyway? Blair was born in Edinburgh wasn't he..as well...

F**k 'im, he is obsessed with King 'Enry anyway. Won't be watching his show so he can add petty to the list of problems he sees in us.

mrsruffallo · 25/04/2009 23:45

Well, I like him.
I don't think it is particularly offensive, or maybe I am so used to to England being slagged off that this kind of thing seems trivial to me.

Yeah, you try calling Africa "a feeble little continent" or something similar and see whether anyone agrees it's just an opinion and not racist!!

There's a point to be made about the over-selling of the twee side of Scottish culture. However, David Starkey didn't say that, what he said was pretty unpleasant to Scottish, Irish and Welsh people. However, not that unpleasant and I think most of us have a thick enough skin to jsut ignore him.

I certainly won't be going out of my way to watch anything he does in the future mind you.

Tn0g · 26/04/2009 09:49

He's just jealous.

CrushWithEyeliner · 26/04/2009 09:52

He has the right to an opinion.....

mayorquimby · 26/04/2009 13:59

as an irishman i'd agree that it's utter bullshit to try and force him to apologise, let him air his opinions and let others make up their own mind about him.
i'd also agree to him with a certain extent about ireland having a bit of a chip on their shoulder or something akin to "small country syndrome" where we trumpet every minor victory and even more than that we revel in the moral victory when the real thing has alluded us (although that is more a thing of the past now).
as far as having a 19th century romanticised nationalism, he does have some valid points, but that is the norm for countries that were under foreign control up until the early 20th century, although a lot of the paddy-whackery that has become tied up in irish nationalism pisses me off as well.

cornsilk · 26/04/2009 14:02

Agree with Tnog. What a pillock.

cornsilk · 26/04/2009 14:03

Or even an eejit.

Nancy66 · 26/04/2009 14:12

I love him, think he's fascinating and makes history come alive. He's entitled to his opinions. At least he's not afraid to offer them up and doesn't toe the line for fear of offending anyone.

nametaken · 26/04/2009 14:16

Well said Nancy. Also, I really hate this crybaby "boo hoo, he said this, she said that" nonsense.

Have the irish, welsh and scottish people such low self-esteem that they can't hack a bit of criticism directed towards them.

differentID · 26/04/2009 14:18

agree with tnog- "Once upon a time England was a great country. Remember we're distinguished by the fact that we don't have national dress."

Yep he's a pathetic little man who seems seperate for a sense of national identity and is jealous of these much smaller countries who have one. England used to be great- yes at invading countries and trying to destroy their national identity. That is my opinion, hastily put together and expressed.

Janos · 26/04/2009 14:52

David Starkey is just a champion stirrer! He's always coming out with stuff like this.

I think he has a point about the cloying twee and sentimental attitude to Scottish Nationalism, albeit presented in a way that's likely to inflame rather than provoke a sensible debate - but that's stirrers for you.

I'm a Scot, and I think he's hysterically funny. So marvellously splenetic in a way that only a "traditional Englishman" can be. I cried tears of laughter.

TsarChasm · 26/04/2009 16:02

Agree with nametaken - it's an opinion.

Rofl at David Starsky though. That puts a whole new slant on him to my mind

Tn0g · 26/04/2009 17:41

Oi, Corny

I hope you mean him and not me.

cornsilk · 26/04/2009 17:50

LOL Tnog - definitely not you!
