twelveyeargap · 21/04/2009 00:14

Guido Fawkes Blog item about Labour New Media Briefing

See the link in the red text "Have a read of Labour?s ?me-too? New Media Strategy here."

The quote is, "We also need to ensure Ministers are featured on online forums, such as Mumsnet, money supermarket, Treehuggers etc. Both as featured visitors and as regular contributors."

Reckon they must be fuming that Cameron has been on twice.

Well done Mumsnet Towers.

Oooh how thrilling. We should have a collective think of some distinct aims wrt to policy shouldn't we?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 21/04/2009 10:45

Or rather, we should work out which ones we want a webchat with as they'll be under pressure to say yes

theDreadPirateRoberts · 21/04/2009 11:27

Or how about offering the politicos a buddy system? Would love to pair up SGB with Harriet Harmon

gemmiegoatEGGS · 21/04/2009 11:28

and we can have fun provoking newbies with the accusation that they are government spies

mistlethrush · 21/04/2009 11:36

or trolls!

JustCallMeGoat · 21/04/2009 12:01

oh a national strategy on 'school run dresses' is what this country needs.

and maybe an aibu section in the pm question time.

Soph73 · 21/04/2009 12:33

about an aibu section in PM's questions. Could you imagine. It would possibly be the only time it would be worth watching them!

Peachy · 21/04/2009 13:00

From a prafctical point how about gettng the ones with responisnbility for SN, benefits, etc on...

or for more fun see if one can host a special AIBU mail in LOL, and watch 'em squirm

JackBauer · 21/04/2009 13:22

I like PEachy's idea about getting thme in for their own speicalist subject, kind of like MN mastermind.
(Mumsnetmind?)

troutpout · 21/04/2009 13:38

Are they sure they are ready for us?

I worry about them...they can be such delicate flowers

edam · 21/04/2009 13:42

Special advisers can be VERY sensitive about any less than a gung-ho 'aren't you fab' reaction to their ministers or policies... we could really have some fun with this! But need a mole who can tell us how often adviser X or minister Y swears about MN.

ABetaDad · 21/04/2009 13:43

twelveyeargap - good you mentioned Guido Guido. I spend a lot of time there under a different name and at Iain Dale. If ayone wants to know what is really happening in poliics go to those two first. The TV news is usually two days late.

Frankly I do not think it will work trying to get on MN. It is just too calculated. I think most MNetters would see straight through it if loads of politicians came on MN around electon time.

Watch out for the trolls though - a lot of political campaiging in the US Presidential election was about inserting 'subliminal ideas' into popular political discourse.

They do this by signng up as Users and then seeding the ideas via blogs and forums like this. New Labour has studied US Democratic election tactics and strategy for years and have sent staff over there as well.

I am not politically active - just an interested citizen.

policywonk · 21/04/2009 14:59

I'm not at all surprised - I really noticed in the process of the G20 stuff that MN is regarded as being a very desirable site to be featured on, among politicians and NGOs. Most of them don't have a clue how to go about it though (and I'm not sure I'd have a clue how they should go about it either - I think most posters on here would react very badly to an organised political presence of any kind).

Re. the webchats - I think MNHQ should dangle them on the condition that the chattees READ the previously posted questions and write out proper responses to them (not just the ones that fit their agenda) BEFORE the live chat begins.

Swedes · 21/04/2009 15:41

Not even Labour want to be associated with Labour's New Media Strategy.

OrmIrian · 21/04/2009 15:43

Oooh yes! What a lovely idea. Govt ministers on AIBU

edam · 21/04/2009 16:18

Swedes

I'm with Alice MacMahon (sp?), former Labour MP who has resigned from the party. Really sad about her leaving but completely understandable.

Peachy · 21/04/2009 17:06

Absolutely PW; there's been a great many incidences where many Mums have posted the same Q (the memorable one for me was about SN kids and childcare provision but Obv I have an interest in that and know there are others) and it has repeatedly been blanked in the interest of stupid questions about twaddle.

ABetaDad · 21/04/2009 17:32

Funny that. I have noticed a few MN questions and threads and then a few days ater I see the same topic discussed in a newspaper a few days later and then a Govt statement on the same issue.

Not suggesting copying or breach of copyright at all but but certainly 'coincidences'.

cornsilk · 21/04/2009 17:51

That explains the amount of bumsex threads on here anyway.

edam · 21/04/2009 18:59

what on earth is treehuggers? Never heard of it.

ABetaDad · 21/04/2009 19:32

Treehuggers is bit like MN but for people interested in 'green' issues.

Treehugger Site

They have forums too:

Treehugger Forums

Of course I have never been there because I think I would just annoy people who are into 'green' issues.

People who are interested in environmental issues are seen as a natural core Labour constituency along with women, public sector workers, and ethnic minorities. Why do you think New Labour is so keen on environmental issues - they see votes in it. Labour do not actually do anything 'real' about green issues though because that might upset business leaders.

ThingOne · 21/04/2009 20:06

Snort. They build a party based on central control where no dissent on policy or strategy is permitted and then they want their members and activists to show independence, and act independently? Oh dearie, dearie me. They really don't get it, do they?

georgimama · 21/04/2009 20:56

Isn't the only reason Gordon Brown hasn't done a chat, because he's refused? I'm sure he's been asked. Dave just has more balls.

hunkermunker · 21/04/2009 21:21

Can you guess what topic I'd like to consider policy aims for, Justine?
